In the 19th century the red kite was hunted close to extinction, another victim of human cruelty. Now thanks to a scheme started in 1989 to re-populate, the red kite has fought back. These birds now flourish in England, Wales and Scotland and as the project is coming to a close, they are finally being introduced to the North East.
