4.74% alcohol. Introduced in 1844.
"Pabst Blue Ribbon is brewed in the finest traditions of an American Premium Lager dating back to 1844. Brewed with a combination of 2 & 6-row malted barley, select cereal grains and American and European hops, Pabst Blue Ribbon is fermented with a proprietary lager yeast. Our unique fermentation and maturation process results in a smooth, full bodied beer with a clean, crisp finish with a fine noble hop aroma."

What had slipped my mind was to bring up the point that until 1957 Pabst Blue Ribbon was the number-one selling beer in America, when it was surpassed by Budweiser.

Ronald, you are right to a point here. Many craft lagers are very similar to PBR when ice cold. When you let them warm up to 45 degrees or so many of the crafts tend get better while Pabst does not.

Ron, I really enjoy your beer videos and the insight you offer. Great stuff. I remember touring the Pabst Brewery in Milwaukee back in the 1980s along with the Pabst Mansion on Wisconsin Avenue in Brewtown. Thanks for bringing back some great memories. I'll enjoy a Pabst from time to time. Actually the beers I really enjoy when I want a break from craft are Miller high life and Corona. Of course there's no beating the aroma of a Founder's Porter, one of my alltime favorites. Keep the videos coming. You are quite the beer aficionado.

Hey Ronald! I picked up a 24 ounce can of PBR on the way home tonight, and I can't believe I found one of your PBR reviews that I hadn't seen yet! A great surprise. This is a fine beer for the price. I got the 24 once can for $1.89. My Grandfather used to drink PBR, a classic working man's beer. There is just nothing wrong with this beer, easy drinking, refreshing, flavorful, a little spice, good levels of carbonation, and it goes with anything. Laissez les bons temps rouler!

I am 58 years old. Saying that, PBR tastes like "beer" as defined by all the roll models of my childhood. PBR was the common man's beer in the 1970's and early 1980's. It was later in my adulthood that I started drinking beer. About that time, the craft beer craze became popular. May I say, I have tried a lot of craft beer. But I always gravitate back to PBR as my beer of choice with the exception of Yuengling which I put right up there with PBR. Neither over power the food I am eating along side them. And may I say that I have never had a hang over the morning after drinking a sixer of PBR, And that is a beautiful thing.

Good review Jay. Nice historical summary. One of my favorite "middle shelf" lagers. I have had Andekker (sp?) beer back in the early 1980s and I thought it was an import beer. It was a fine beer and cost about 20% more than the normal AALs.

When I started drinking beer about 11 years ago I remember my light beer drinking friends would look down on Pabst. I never understood it because to me Pabst tasted better than any other macro beer we drank. Looking back I realized they didn’t like it because it had real beer flavor. PBR is the best beer for its price here in CT Narragansett is right up there as well.

You can get a 24-pack of PBR for 12.99 here in central Illinois. PBR in my opinion has more of a hop profile than the likes of Miller High Life, Budweiser, Busch and you know where i'm going with those comparisons. I would place PBR among the likes of Stroh's, Yuenglings, and Schlitz(although I would agree that the latter 3 have more of a hop profile). I also had seen where you and Maria Devan had talked about cigarette smokers not being able to taste the profiles as well as non-smokers, and while this may be true(I'm not a scientist lol) I feel as though after I have the taste of tobacco in my mouth the taste of the beer is much more intense and you can contrast it better than if say I hadn't smoked a cigarette or had a chicken sandwich. That's just me though.
@ronaldtheriot
@ronaldtheriot 9 лет назад
kyle8769 To me, after I puff on a cigar, I find it interferes with the beer flavors. $12.99 for a case, huh? That's so cheap!
@kyle8769
@kyle8769 9 лет назад
Yeah it is, but you can get a 30-pack of Natty Ice at 5.9% for 12.99 too. I guess I can' kind of understand, I've just smoked so long I can't really speak on if I had never smoked.

One of the Supermarkets in the UK now stock this in 6pk cans and 660ml bottles. So picked up a 6 pk for £6, which is probably overpriced compared to what you guys get it for. Anyway weather here today was hot so thought I would give this a try. Got to say this is possibly the best American Macro Lager I have tried, alongside Michelob and Coors (not the light version). Went well with a Jim Beam Devil's cut on the side ;-)

just finishing the last can from the 6pack I bought. Think I told you previously that it is much more expensive in the UK, marketed alongside the craft beers and super premium euro lagers. I would probably not buy it again at our prices but certainly would if it was at your prices. I couldn't agree more with what you say about price comparisons with craft beer..i think it is most prominent in lagers though. ipas and stouts often justify the price increase but lagers I just don't think the quality difference between macro and micro is that great (if existent at all)

How about before probation? How did beer taste? It tasted like a lot of craft beer
@ronaldtheriot
@ronaldtheriot 8 лет назад
People always say that, but, and this is a big "but", if you read things written before 1919 by the companies and about the beers, what they describe seems to be just like what I taste when I am drinking Coors Banquet or Pabst Blue Ribbon or Budweiser, today, Mitchell Mulder. Another thing is that those companies made "craft-style" beers, like Andecker, before 1919, and their descriptions of those seem to be in line with what we think of, when we talk about craft beer. I appreciate you watching, by the way.

Pretty sure they did not use adjuncts like rice and corn

But, if you look at pre-1919 Budweiser labels, it lists rice, just as it does, now.

Tyler Campbell Thanks, Tyler Campbell! I appreciate you watching! Well, I bought the khaki one from Pabst, and the other two were give-aways at promotional tents that Pabst had set up at events, like for the Super Bowl in New Orleans.
