The Relics of Athalën - Now for AoE2HD! (Age of Empires 2 Custom Campaign)

The sequel to "Gwyndlegard" and "The Rockspring Revolution" is a fully modded, 7 scenario campaign which comes with 400+ new units and graphics. You can now play "The Relics of Athalën" with your Steam version of the game! Follow the steps in the video, or the guide below, to install the campaign:
To play the campaign with AoE2HD you need to install the AoE2HD Compatibility Patch, which allows you to play scenarios and mods made for the CD version in the HD edition, without purchasing the CD version.
You can find the Compatibility Patch here: aoccs.net/
And "The Relics of Athalën" campaign here: aok.heavengames...
STEP-BY-STEP INSTALLATION GUIDE:
1) Install the Compatibility Patch (link above) in the same folder where you installed AoE2 HD, usually "C:\\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Age2HD".
2) Extract the files in this .zip to their corresponding subfolder in the main Age2HD directory:
* The file in the "Campaign" folder goes to "C:\\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Age2HD\Scenario"
* The files in the "Ai" folder go to "C:\\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Age2HD\AI"
* The files in the SOUND/scenario folder go to "C:\\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Age2HD\SOUND\scenario"
* The files in the DATA folder go to "C:\\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Age2HD\DATA"
3) IMPORTANTLY - do NOT extract the files into the folders found in the "resources" folder, they HAVE to go in the main Age2HD folder.
4) Start up the game from the "age2_x1" folder, using the file with the green helmet icon (age2_x2.exe).
5) Enjoy the campaign!

I played the whole campaign twice and I must say that it is great. Now, if you ever intend to write down the story into a novel then you could enter more in depth into the world-building part. Amaria and Arthalien seem to be interesting countries with interesting, but mostly unknown history. What was Xioche before Xaphira and what was it's relation with Gwyndlegard? What happened to Saranchrion and who became the new regent in Rockspring? Did Rockspring become a vassal again under the terms negotiated by Mezenghi and the late king or was it more integrated into Gwyndlegard? Who is Lord Mezenghi? For how long has he been ruling Gwyndlegard and what were his policies before the Xioche invasion? What happened to King Wellon and to Xioche after the war and was Winsbourg resettled and was Aienbourg destroyed for the grapes to grow again? There are just so many questions.

Thank you! A novel (or several) would definitely allow, even require, that I do a lot more world building, and there is already a lot that I've thought out but which never made it into any of the campaigns. There are a handful of answers in another scenario I've made, called "The Winter Storm", which takes place in Sarachrion 50 years after this campaign. But again it is quite sparse, seeing as an AoE2 scenario is kind of a restricted format. Anyway, there is a lot which I would really like to dive more deeply into, and I'm constantly thinking up new tidbits about the world.

Is there any plans to make your work available for Definitive Edition, or is it a bit far, Basse?

I do plan on making at least "Gwyndlegard" and "The Rockspring Revolution" adapted for DE, but at the moment I unfortunately have too much work on my plate to focus on it. Both are technically playable in DE already, but they don't have any fancy on-screen objectives and such.

Basse, it's impossible to launch on steam unfortunately. I tried everything and i am doing it correct. "File not found" is the campaign available even after the clean reinstall. Several people report the same. I desperately want to play the last chapter of the saga, is there anything that can be done? On DE it just crashes the game instantly.

i also tried to get an original 1.0C game from the old disk. Resulted into same "file not found" campaign in the list even with the original game.

Mr. Basse I have a question for you, How did you make the effect of scuba diving in this company? I mean the Blue Dragon hijacking mission

Hey, I assume you mean the stealth mission in scenario 6. You can achieve this effect by placing 256+ invisible units (e.g. "FlagX") in a single tile. Because the game cannot render that many objects in a given area, it turns the units that stand or move through that tile invisible. You can then place shallows under that tile, using different shades of water on the sides to mask the shallows, and voilà you've got yourself a "swimmable" area!

@@LordBasseFilms Yes! many thanks! very cool effect! Another question is how to make a huge map like in the Gwyndlegard script? and how to make fireballs like a boss fight in the Rockspring revolution? what is the name of this object? thanks in advance (and sorry for the bad english)

@@nathanexplosion9954 To answer the first one: lots of time and effort! :P The fireball is an object called "MFFFG", it's the projectile unit for the Fire Ship. You can place it in the editor, if you have unlocked all hidden objects, otherwise I believe there is a pre-made data file for this in the Blacksmith at Age of Kings Heaven. The tricky bit is that you can't actually select it and make it move in the editor, you'll have to use AoK Trigger Studio for that, and then use a Patrol effect for every movement you want it to make. Tricky, but workable. For my later, modded scenarios I just made a new version of the same object which is easier to control.

@@LordBasseFilms Thanks again! Your companies are great! The best I've played in Age of empires. Do you still have projects as large-scale as the Gwyndlegard trilogy? And is there anything else in this universe? (on what planet does Gwyndlegard happen?) Or can you advise something similar from other authors? I would be very interested. Well, I sincerely thank you for your work. We will wait for new projects from you. And if you ever decide to make a remake of Gwyndlegard for AOE 2 DE, I would love to play it

Some of my favourites from there are "Sabato Returns", "The King's Best Men" and "The Frankish Throne".

Hi Basse, when I go to launch the game with age2_x2.exe I get an error message saying my graphics card isn't compatible with directdraw and the game won't start. Any way to overcome this?

@@LordBasseFilms ayy I've got the game working, but when I click custom campaign relics of athalën doesn't show up, only "file not found" Unsure if I've made an error while installing, as I had to create AI and Scenario folders as they weren't already in my game directory

Jag köpte Age of Empiers 2 hd och all dlc till. Jag kunnde köra Campaingen men när jag skulle köra en vanlig match så fanns inte dem civilisationerna som ingick i dlc. Jag har provat att avinstallerat spelet och laddat ner det igen men det fungerade inte och om man googlar på det så kommer bara en massa mög upp så jag vänder mig till Age of Empires 2 kungen (Lordbasse) Vad ska jag göra?

Hm, ingen aning vad som kan ha orsakat det faktiskt! Det enda jag kan komma på är att DLC-paketen kanske inte är valda när du startar spelet. Är de ikryssade om du högerklickar på spelet i Steam, och går till Egenskaper\DLC?

hmmm. so basically it's not available for HD as you are playing AoC with combability patch/aoe2tools. Almost thought you actually touched campaign and porting it instead of just tutorial that has been there last 4(?) years.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. It's a workaround. I've been trying for a good while now to do a proper HD port, but none of the methods I've tried have worked. The only way that I can find that would make it a truly HD-adapted mod would involve recompiling the mod from scratch as an HD mod, and then replacing every individual object in every scenario to match the new object IDs... and that's just not worth the hassle. With this method, at least, anyone who owns HD can play the campaign.

@@LordBasseFilms I know, I was myself looking way to port it but it was way too much work to do especially when I already had finished campaign with alternative conversion method. Campaign itself was great although I had a lot crashing with 1.0c(heard it was working with no problems with userpatch but description said you need to use 1.0c).

@@LordBasseFilms Man, is there any hope for this to be in DE as well? Or this to be redone for it? I think it's a nay, but I'd buy DE only for this campaign. Just love your work too much. :(

@@Balequalm Hey, thanks a lot for the compliments! Unfortunately I don't think it will be possible, or, rather, possible but extremely tedious and time-consuming to do. I'd have to recreate the entire mod from scratch, basically, and probably the scenarios as well. So in the end I don't think it's worth it, when I could spend that time making new scenarios specifically for DE. I also have a CD/UP sequel in the works for this campaign, so I want to get that done first too!

@@LordBasseFilms Well, all those fancy graphs and tools would be awesome for the mod though, wouldn't they? Seeing the animations, new units and cutscenes in DE was my wet dream for a while hahahaha. I get it, though I hope you'll do it eventually. I don't know if you have other works I've missed, but I don't think I'll fall in love with anything quite like I did with Relics of Athalën. I want to play it in DE ere I perish. ♥️ BTW thanks for replying this fast.
