In this clip, Jared shares the story of how this incredible guitar survived a tornado and landed, mud-caked and neckless, in a fan’s front yard. Named as a nod to The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy still sounds absolutely incredible even after all these years-albeit after some serious cleaning and restoration at the hands of Joel Wilkins of JW Guitar Restorations.
Watch as Jared discusses the features that make Dorothy a real treasure when it comes to Gibson Les Pauls, including its original bridge pickup with diagonal height-adjustment screws-a rare component found only on the first 100 or so Les Pauls from 1952. Listen as Jared explains the work involved in restoring Dorothy to its former glory, from the forensic precision used to graft a new neck and fingerboard from old mahogany and Brazilian rosewood, to finding ways to preserve the guitar’s battle-scars while making sure it was still playable, ensuring the vintage mojo was still present!

I found a Gibson explorer in a pawn shop for $300, in 1989. Turns out it was a custom shop edition 1983 korina model. I still have it😎

I saw pictures on internet of dorothy before the restoration. In one of this photos there were not holes (near the bridge p90) for the trapiece that you always see on a 52 standard les paul. So my question is, what kind of trapiece had this early 52 model?

The original 52 les paul had a trapeze tailpiece similar to Dorthy. But it was made of longer thiner pole-like pieces of metal. The bridge was just a bar held in place with little tacks/string pressure. Look up old photos and you'll see. Very similar to authentic jazz boxes. The Les Paul was intended to be a jazz guitar. Les Paul (the human) wanted a solid body guitar so he could turn his Amp up louder to compete with the horns and have it not feedback. Hollow body guitars, all guitars up to that point, would feedback (skretch) when turned up loud. The hollow body was designed to combat this. Players could turn up and be heard without risking feedback. The original solid body guitar was actually created by Les Paul (the human) and was essentially a log of wood. If I remember correctly I think he said in an interview it was a piece of railway wood. He made a guitar out of it and attached little side pieces that made it look like a jazz box. You should also be able to find this online. Just search Les Paul "the log."

@@Vidarboots Thanks! When i wrote the comment i made a mistake because i thought that the trapiece bridge was mounted with screws also near the p90. Then i saw other models and i understood that this bridge was only mounted with the screws near the strap button, and then only by the pressure near the p90, without any holes in the body.

Yeah so this is somehow supposed to make sense I guess but every 'old' Les Paul that I have had the good fortune to play for a bit or those that I have heard others go after I am amazed at the quality of sound(s) that the instrument can and will produce. There is something thicker, there's more scream to these babies, hell there is just more anything you want embodied in these things. I want one.

I got my first Gibson les Paul standard in cherry burst in 2021 I had watched the guitar channels to see what they were saying and they were giving good reviews I waited to see how the new owners were going to run Gibson either a $ maker or go back to making a good guitar after 3 years of running Gibson is when I got mine it was made in early 21 I got it late July but I fkn love it people have to remember that they are mostly hand made but no regrets I'm looking forward to my next one in fact it's about 7am and I'm getting ready to plug in for awhile then back at it after I take care of business anyway I like reading comments like yours I don't like negative ones especially people that don't or haven't played one then bitch about it I'm not a wealthy man I got it with my 1st retirement check at 57 so I still have my long hair from the 80s and hopefully I have a lot of life left signed a retired teamster have a great day with your les pauls 😊

@@rayfabris2512 thank you and likewise!! I’m 54 and also recently retired, it took me this long to be able to afford a real Gibson!! I started with an LP Epiphone, it was great but not the rear thing, I moved to Nashville from Texas 3 years ago and that’s when the trouble started!! 😅 I would go to the Gibson Garage every week and drool over all those beautiful guitars…..and the sound!! Became good friends with the store folks and finally pulled the trigger. Love my Classic, so versatile but I wanted something more edgy and I found it in the Slash series!! Absolutely love the darn thing!! 🙌🏻

what I did was not turn in my paperwork for about 7 months so I got 7 months of back pay I'm in California and the garage was open for about 2 weeks so I called them the sent pictures actually 1 because that was good enough for me I told the guy give me that and don't send anymore a week later I got it but before I called them I called sweetwater late June and they weren't going to get any until Oct or Nov I didn't want to wait that long anyway congratulations on your retirement and your les pauls I have some dam phone calls coming in I think I thought being retired you can relax? there's always something I have to take care of or phone calls I have to make or take lol anyway enjoy you retirement and your Gibsons and have a great day ROCK ON 🎸 👍

I repaired guitars. I feel that neck had something do with that tone- and it is an “advanced” product over original. The frets are different from original , and l’m guessing the neck carve is original to that neck- not necessarily to the original. Though the differences might be slight, if you’re a daily player or top artist the difference would be huge.

I also get a feeling that the woods used on the fretboard and neck are far superior to original- and reps a tone upgrade…and the weight of that neck is above original…just a feeling…

A friend of mine was asked to clear out a direct house that was scheduled for demolition And wasn't really anything about you left but was told if he finds anything he gets to keep it no problem when he was clearing out the loft he found a mid 70s fender Jaguar in a manky old case

The same thing happened to a friends Gold Top Deluxe 69 that was on a flood. He sent pics to Gibson to see if they can restore it. Unfortunately never heard back from them.

@@gibson the owner's daughter was not aware of the significance of the guitar and also, this is a part of the story that JJ has added in recent retellings because he got some heat about it, so not sure if he's even being truthful about it...

I would tell the owner the value of the even body of the guitar, and after assembled value of the guitar which is, obviously very high, I am not saying he didn't tell the estimate value, but I hope he did.
