Two weeks ago this little orphan arrived at Tacugama. In a bag.
She was handed in voluntarily by her holder, who said that a group of wild chimps was playing near his farm. He saw that the mother fell from a big tree with the baby, the mother was limping and left the baby behind. He kept the infant in a cage outside his house for one week. As he knew that keeping wild chimps is illegal, he took the infant to hand it to Tacugama.
We know that a mum would never give leave her baby, no matter what, and we can only hope that some of the chimps have survived the encounter with the farmer.
The only good thing about this situation is that our work in the field, our education program and our awareness campaigns are gaining more traction.
People are getting more aware that it is illegal to have a chimp as a pet.
But still we are heart broken.
We will inform you in the next couple of days about her well-being. Her name is Ribi.
She is now in the save hands of our veterinarian and Mamma P.
