Funny thing. The reason Ace returning didn't get as much cheer as Dwayne is because they had to reshoot the scene where Ace was revealed because the audience were cheering too much for the dialogue to be heard

One of the greatest shows of all time. Imagine a bunch of twenty-somethings gathering in a tiny efficiency apartment in southeast Tennessee to get high and watch Red Dwarf on Georgia Public Broadcasting in the late nineties every Saturday night. That was us. Gods bless the boys from the 'Dwarf.

@LAHrebirth By definition heroes die - that's pretty much what defined them in Greek myth, and continues to this day - plus it's kinda cool that Ace's death gave rise to the legend which in turn ensures the redemption of every Arnold J Rimmer in the multiverse. Now that's a truly noble and epic tale. :)

I wonder what my reaction to Duane and Ace was when I first saw this episode? Probably nothing, as Series 6 was my first series, so back then I had no idea who they were - I probably didn't even know Cat and Rimmer well enough to realize they were out of character in those scenes either. In fact, I even remember when I started to get more familiar with Red Dwarf, (but had still seen very little) that I misremembered these changes in appearances to be actual disguises for some reason, but I later saw "Back to Reality" and "Dimension Jump" and then this episode again, and it all made sense (if I recall correctly.) I saw "Pollymorph" before those episodes (but after this one) but can't remember how much that cleared up for me, other than knowing that they did the shapeshifter before this episode.
