Today I am taking time to discuss the upcoming return of Heroscape from Renegade Game Studios. Heroscape is a table top mininture war game that was made by Hasbro several years ago but has since been take out of print, but it has been kept alive by the secondary market and by the fan base. I hope you enjoy the video and thank you for watching.

I haven't played heroscape in several years but it is a fun game. I really hope the return of Heroscape isn't going to be half hearted.

Renegade is not a subsidiary of Hasbro. They are an independent company that licenses some IP from Hasbro.

I own and have played Renegade's Transformer's game that's compatible with their GI Joe and Power Rangers games. I'm not a fan. There's a skill system that works on cumulative dice in a way that reminds of me of Savage Worlds, but it's very largely a hack of D&D 5e sans a magic system. It's the same structure in the 20 levels, vehicle types as Races, 5e style subclasses, feats, etc It even persists past the point of making sense at all like using the 5ft grid system despite most of the characters being giant robots. Even the unique skill system does gel with me because it feels it heavily penalizes you for minimaxing into specializing into one or two skills at the expense of everything else. Both the Transformers games and the GI Joe one seem to share all the same bones, so unless you really wanna play reskinned D&D 5e I'd instead recommend a generic system of your choice instead if you'd wanna run a GI Joe game. My personal picks would be Fate by Evil Hat Games which is made with pulp action in mind or Cartoon Action Hour, which even has GI Joe as an inspiration and a sample setting in the form of the legally distinct Strikeforce Freedom. Though I will mention Renegade has a lot less to do with this than you might expect. These are basically a re-release of the Avalon Hill Kickstarter that didn't meet it's funding goal. The sculpts and cards are all almost exactly the same as the Avalon Hill versions sans a few tweaks. I've heard good things about Renegade's job on the new edition of the Vampire the Masquerade tabletop rpg, but I'm cautious about trying it after the Transformers game. I was a kid when the original Heroscape and just couldn't get a hold of it back then. Now that I'm a grown woman with my own cash, I'm getting way more interested in tabletop war games now. So part of me really wants to get in on this. However, I'm also in a similar boat to you where I'm not sure I really wanna support a Hasbro owned game again so soon after they tried to get rid of the OGG for D&D and when I can still remember them calling Pinkertons thugs on someone who got MTG stock. Still, I'm curious to see how the new version of Heroscape fares.

As a worse case, you could always go with 3d printing your own tiles or hit ebay for the second hand market. I got really lucky once because I found a full OG master set with some extra stuff for $35. If I recall, you can download the rulebooks from the OG sets too. Its a shame to hear about the Transformers and GI Joe game too. I think I will check out that Cartoon Action Hour TTRPG you mentioned. Thank you!

Man heroscape was the #$@(*! The inability to obtain the boosters is IMO what really killed it off. Toys R Us was the wrong horse to bet on...

Don't forget lack of advertising. There is people that I know that didn't even know about Heroscape until I really started collecting stuff for it and by that point is was out of print.

Is it at all like unmatched?

@@grog3514Think more like Heroclix without the clix bases and the stats are fixed over changing stats like Heroclix. Although, you could probably use any Unmatched figures for Heroscape, you would just have to download and print the cards for them.
