Came to put a random comment real quick for a chance to get a collector booster box. Stayed and watched all the way because of this great story (and a great storyteller). I'm going to my LGS tonight, for some Commander games, and I will check out if there is any Magic comics around.
Congrats, you have been selected at random to receive the collector booster box! Please send an email to TolarianCommunityCollege at gmail so that we can begin the verification/shipping process! Congrats again!
Prof, have you considered narrating more often (audible - style?) These videos are fantastic and I love how alive it makes the MTG multiverse feel. However the best part is the way you articulate these events. I could quite happily listen to you narrate paint drying
Ah ah this reminds me of when "dark depths" was one of the aces i kept in my commander deck until it came up against a proliferate deck with Atraxa... Marit Lage has been sleeping deeply ever since :’) Anyway, a good dive into the history of magic ! Thanks Prof’
@@simonboucher5170 haha it's a good way to give your opponent a cold sweat, but in my case I was on a blue and white deck with some infinite mana combos (like power artifact and grim or basalt monolith ) to wake up the beast, but I didn't have much luck drawing the right cards I needed. good advice though ;)
I love House Dimir! Lazav is the commander of my favorite deck. I'm glad that they didn't do Lazav dirty. It would take more than the destruction of his house to put the old shapeshifter down for the count.
Funny that still nobody knows what Marit Lage actually is. Some elements are Eldrazi, but others are not. Just like an old HP Lovecraft monstrosity, aeons old and powerful beyond normal measures. Makes a great story!
Plus she/they/it comes from a time and place where the stories were only tangentially connected. You could do crazy things that did not have a big reveal until 4 sets later haha.
All I Hope is that Marit Lage don't receive the Eldrazi or Bolas retcon and end defeated by Power of love and friendship. She deserves better. Eldritch Horrors should not be fought unless is Something as old and horrifying as itself. Maybe the Eldrazi Titans purporse was to cleanse the Multiverse of such beings as Lage.
Well, love and friendship took care of Ulamog and Kozilek, I see no reason why it wouldn't work on Marit Lage. Ravnica even has leylines just like Zendikar, and a being deeply connected to the plane in Niv Mizzet. It would not shock me if 10 Guildmasters+Niv channeling mana into Jaya let her re-enact her banishing spell. Similar to how Nissa's channeling let Chandra (Jaya's pupil!) burn away the Titans.
@@lysander3262 yeah and that's one of the worst thing that happened in the entire Magic Lore. The whole gatewatch is a big fiasco and I Hope they dont do It again. Marit Lage was our Eldritch Horror way before Eldrazi existed in concept. Turn out that Eldrazis ended being big Kaijus for our Super Sentai Team, instead of godlike creatures from before time.
This series is actually quite interesting in how it diverges from the lore, and it's nice seeing a story being told that isn't dependant on a set and the cards within, since that often leads to inconsistencies and weird pacing. As much as I liked some of the recent worldbuilding, it's cool to see a story just be a story.
Thank you for still being here! I used to watch when I was 17 and just recently started playing again. I enjoyed being able to come back to a familiar face after 8 years of not playing.
This brings back memories of a Ravnica roleplay campaing my friends and i did long before the rulebook for dnd was out (We used the Fate system for it). Ravnica is my "comfort" plane as odd as it sounds, the storytelling on such a vast setting as the city-plane is limitless.
I love the story of magic, it really adds to the individual card’s feel, not to mention how certain cards interact with one another. Also, I’m leaving this for the kamigawa box.
Thanks Professor and everyone involved in the making of these videos. As a filthy casual that has recently started going to shops for Friday Night Magic I was told my decks are not competitive enough so your channel has been helping me to step up my game and I also enjoy learning about the origins and backstories of characters and cards in those decks.
When an evil, hooded guy proclaims he "already won", you know he's about to die. When they will learn? Fantastic serie, btw. Will you do maybe something similar related to the novels?
I like to think this is something of a tie-in with the card Priest of Forgotten Gods. As its flavor texts specifically references religious traditions older than the Orzhov. A cult to Blind Eternities C'thulu seems to fit there.
I just came back to Magic for the first time since I was a teen, which has now led to the discovery of your content. Not only is your content informative and helpful, but also entertaining. Great stuff!
Hey Prof, any chance after this series is concluded you could do a series recapping the MtG comics published by Acclaim and Dark Horse back in the 90s?
Lazav is definitely one of my favorite characters. He’s such a neutral character that seems bad; the complexity of characters like him and similar story devises are often what makes a story solid, intriguing, and desirable. I love that you’re putting an emphasis on the story Prof.
I love the stories that come from MTG it really gets immersive not only with the little tidbits of lore in the cards art and bottom text but the books and other media they release. Keep up the awesome narrations
@@pedromartins272 yes. It’s a divergence from canon. While it can be disappointing that it’s not canon, this decision does give the writers the freedom needed to make an incredible series. This way, they don’t need to be tied down the the current sets nor do they need to future-proof the story. I don’t mind having an alternate canon so long as it’s well done. Just my thoughts, though
@@leafkindruid Tbh, i like the "Its not canon... unless..." kind of approach, it gives writters the capability of writting something that can be both detached from canon but if is well received some of its elements can be later re-used or brought into canon at some point down the line, i see this being made into a set after we explore the incoming war against the Phyrexians a few (at least more than 4) years in the future, maybe with different characters if Wizards has the balls to put one of these precious boys in danger during the current events but since everyone included here exudes a great smell of plot armor (except Jaya) it gives me a certain confidence.
If Marit Lage is a being that is beyond the blind eternities, does that make it Eldrazi in origin? Or could wizards be teasing a totally new class of outer gods :OOOOOO
@@pedromartins272 I think any eldrazi theory is plausible if wizards confirmed that Marit Lage is from a realm beyond the blind eternities, I just remember that being debunked in many past debates but who knows this is Wizards... I was thinking who would be the next great threat once we are done with the phyrexians. Eldrazi and the whole concept revolving around balance and atrophy in the multiverse could certainly make for a good overarching storyline since they've already established a good base for Eldrazi lore. Here's hoping Wizards writing does a good job on it IF they choose to make them the next multiversal threat.
I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be pronounced "Merit Layj", like merit increase and sage/phage/stage/cage/rage/mage. But I wasn't going to be the one to tell him, he seemed so happy reading his lines
@@hosersupreme I've heard it pronounced so many ways at this point I'm not even sure what to go with. I end up being silly and pronouncing it "la-gay" yours sounds legit though.
@@hosersupremeSince 1995, I've only ever heard it pronounced your way. The Professor's pronunciation rankled me a little bit each time he said the name.
The trio goes to Niv Mizzet: 'Dimir is behind the attacks!' Niv Mizzet: 'Nope! Somebody is playing you and wants you to think that. Also Jace is an idiot!' The trio finds out about House Dimirs destruction and confronts Mizzet: Niv Mizzet: 'Nope! House Dimir is playing you and wants you to think that!' Either Niv Mizzet got old and senile or he has his own motivation and tries to buy time and slow the others down 🤔
Alternatively shoddy, derivative writing, but I'm being a pessimist and don't have enough read of the comics to make such a claim, beyond saying you can list it as an option. (Because you pretty much always can on anything.)
@@ryanjones_rheios I like to interpret that In-universe the Dimir are the types to try and do a double-double-cross or misdirection-within-misdirection kind of deal or that Niv's ego carried to his new form and he just likes being a contrarian in order to always have the "I told you so" moment if able; both are highly subjective interpretations and i kind of doubt they are meant to be taken that way but i like these two takes way too much not to share them.
@@davidmcc9141 Technically we've only seen two images of Niv in game during War and both had a heavy amount of "effects" around him, so maybe this is him without all of the shiny bits? i mean, i hope it is that way, he looks great!
@@Nobody-zl3kk Not trying to be a Negative Nancy, but WotC has stated that the boom comics are non-canon to the core card story. Believe me, the moment Vraska pulled the "he wasn't afraid to look me in the eyes" line I flew to check if this was canon and that WotC fixed my OTP. This is just a really well put together endeavor, both writing and art. This, combined with the other recent online writings and the Kamigawa comic, gives me hope that they'll branch out the story media more. As a big fan of vorthos, these comics have been a treat.
@@davidmcc9141 I know it's non-canon, I'm just voicing my enjoyment of it in the hopes that it is one of those "It isn't canon... Unless..." Kind of deals where the elements that are enjoyed are integrated back into canon by the writers after said elements receive positive feedback. Allow me to be hopeful with this one. :3
Looooooooving these recap vids! I've been reading the series religiously, but I always love hearing someone else explain it, as there's certainly something I missed or didn't think of at the time!
Magic has such good lore and stories to explore, I remember a few years ago going back and listening to someone read all the old short stories tied to each set. It was perfect while cleaning or doing anything, made the cards I loved to play even better.
Dark Depths is one of those cards that got me into deck building so it's really awesome to learn the history of Marit Lage! Great content, can't wait to see more of this series.
It's always interesting to see people talk about Magic's story, and your videos are no different! Definitely a good time, and looking forward to more of this content in the future too.
With social media and everything the art of comic books are in my opinion lost. I thank you for taking your time to read them and pointing out to continue the story to head to your nearest comic book store. Hopefully people will understand that feeling again. THANK YOU!!!!
The idea of a story focusing on Marit Lage is very cool, given that she has been only mentioned in few cards. Your narration, moreover, is perfect. I will definitely look for these comics!
I love the depth of these videos. Its easy as a relatively new player to miss the story completely, just paying attention to cards and abilities.. I think taking time and enjoying the thought and effort that went into the background story of mtg cards make this game truly special. I wish I had gotten into this game in the 90s when I was obsessed with pokemon, I never heard of magic until early 2000s and didn't start playing until 2015 and again this year after a couple years off.
First of all, sorry for my bad English. I'm so happy I discovered this channel. All the videos are so interesting and I'm enjoying mtg so much thanks to you prof. Thank you!
The magic storyline has always felt difficult to get into without knowing where to go, but these little episodes really present it in digestable short-story podcasts... I do kinda be lovin it
Honestly, came to this channel for the advice on what to buy and stayed for the vibe and for the love that is put into these videos. I might not watch every video but i know i‘m in for a treat when i do.
I really like these lore videos, including the greatest heroes and villains ones. It's a great and entertaining way to catch up on some lore after not playing for years.
Dusted off my old collection after roughly a decade to play with some friends. Now I'm getting back into it, thanks for the help with the recent news and "new" (to me anyway) formats Prof!
Videos like this are a godsend to people like me who are not long time players of the game. The time it would take to go through everything just for context could take days.
long time subscriber here, I always appreciate the videos you make and the information you share with the magic the gathering community. Don't lose your Mana rocks over these pulls professor!
I like this treatment of the magic story. I remember avidly reading flavor text back in weatherlight to learn about all the characters and making up my own stories of their adventures. I wish there was more emphasis on that these days, so thanks for bringing attention to it!
I'll always have a soft spot for Ravnica, the original block is where I first fell in love with Magic, and the whole War of the Spark block is when I got back into the game after a lengthy absence. I especially love these videos, as I'm always interested in the little story snippets we get from the cards and the flavor text, but I don't exactly have the time to go delving into all of the details. Big ups, Professor!
The editing/transitions between the comic art frames is great! As someone who got into magic somewhat recently through the tcg formats, I'm interested in the lore now!
I'm a new magic player, and I have to say that your videos I think are some of the best in the community. Good quality, creativity and a unique humor. They have helped me understand many things about this new world that I am entering. I just have to thank you.
Funny how I was looking up the Marit Lage story just before this video was released. I really appreciated the video and the fact that they've brought Marit back into the story - it will be interesting to see what comes next!
Man these really bring the cards to life, I've been playing since original Avacyn but somehow only managed to read the Phyrexian lore and the Dack Fayden lore
Just started collecting these cards after 34 years walking this Earthly plane. Haven't taken the time to delve into the stories, until now. Excellent performance dude!
