Hello and thank you so much for tuning in to SUMO PRIME TIME. It’s already February, and that means we’re all looking forward to the next grand tournament, the Spring Tournament in Osaka, which will take place in March. However, let’s take a moment to reflect on the just-concluded competition in Tokyo - the New Year’s Tournament. It was a nail-biter all the way to the end. After the dust settled, Yokozuna Terunofuji emerged as the last man standing. With this triumph, the 32-year-old Yokozuna, competing for the first time since July of last year, proved many doubters wrong about his ability to perform at a high level again. Check out Terunofuji’s entire performance from the New Year’s Tournament and witness how he rose to the occasion. Thank you always for supporting the channel, and we look forward to seeing all of you throughout the month of February, as we’ll be back with more features and updates. Arigato!!
Sure wish that somebody somewhere would've thought that a slow-mo replay of the feet touching out of bounds would've been of interest on the Yusho playoff bout. That was really close. No monoii and no replay of it would be weird if it were any other sport. Imagine if the game winning touchdown at the Superbowl was really close to being out of bounds, and they decided not to show replays of it....yeah. Weird.
@@chonqmonk That was a case of the dead body rule. Kotonowaka was in an entirely defensive position when Teru pushed him out, and helpless to stop his fall. The only reason he didn't touch clay first was that he was going over the edge and there was no clay to touch, just air.
@@LauraJdogmom Oh? You got that from the replay and discussion did you? No? Ohhh, I get it; you're just saying stuff... (& B: Shini Tai rule is stupid, not always called when it could be, and not called by the gyoji, who ONLY calls who went out. It should be abolished, even though it didn't come into play here.)
Interesting stat for Terunofuji going back to 2017. Of the last 15 makuuchi tournaments that Terunofuji has finished (wrestled on Day 15), he has either won or been runner up in 13 of them.
Once Kotonowaka had won to get to 13-2 then Kirishima at 11-3 had nothing except pride to fight for. And pride only gets you so far when there's 175kgs of yokozuna glaring at you from the other side of the dohyo.
Kirishima might be my favorite rikishi, but Terunofuji made him look like a leaf in a windstorm. Yikes. Major credit and huge congratulations to Terunofuji!
I'm predicting Kirishima will bulk up more for next tournament. The heavys dominated this time. Kotonowaka was able to hang in better because he is about as big as Terunofuji; not to discount his skills or anything.
Once again we seen firsthand that Terunofuji at 75% is still better than any other rikishi fighting today! He exemplified this on day 15 when he tossed Kirishima out of the ring like a ragdoll! Kirishima is the number 2 ranked rikishi and Terunofuji absolutely diminated him! One more yusho and Terunofuji will have cemented his legacy into history! However if he wins 2 more yushos then he will have tied Yokozuna Akebono, who has 11 yushos as well! If Terunofuji wins 11 Yusho then he will be in the top 10 all time best Yokozuna! Behind Hakuho and Asashoryu he will be the 3rd best Mongolian Yokozuna all time!
I don't know if anyone actually reads these comments but I would like to thank the person that is uploading the Grand Sumo Highlights faster than before. This is a huge improvement over how slow and inconsistent it was before. Suggestion: Can the Sumo Highlights be placed in their own playlist so that it's easier to look for in the NHK main channel. Thank you.
I started watching sumo back when Terunofuji was making his way back thru Juryo, even tho I was comepletly new to sumo I could see that this man was something special, its a treat every time I get to see him compete. He says he wants 10 wins and I think he can do it. Lets go Terunofuji the 73rd Yokozuna, you can do it!
The phoenix, out of the ashes, perseveres yet another Basho. There is nothing more that I'd like to see but Yokozuna Terunofuji Haruo win into double digits Yusho wins, cementing his name into history, where he belongs with the other great Yokozuna of my age, like Hakuho, Chiyonofuji, Asashoryu, Kitanoumi, Tananohana, Musashimaru and Akebono. This and Tamawashi's longevity in the dohyo, will be unfortunately the last feats of greatness I fear, that I will witness in my lifetime, past the domeneering Hakuho Sho era in Sumo. My humble prayers towards this purpose 🙏
Interesting stat for Terunofuji going back to 2017. Of the last 15 makuuchi tournaments that Terunofuji has finished (wrestled on Day 15), he has either won or been runner up in 13 of them.
Everyone had ample opportunity to get into the top rank in his absence. He must’ve been wondering why nobody made the move. Well he’s back now and will be no easy Street that has been made clear. I love it. I love sumo and the way it is set up there is no easy way to the top.
Terunofuji showed some signs of ring rust in the first half of the basho, but really found his footing from there on. He looked strong and confident! I hope he stays healthy this year and can manage a few more titles. Thank you Hiro for all your wonderful videos and commentary.
People keep whining about rust, but it simply isn't true. Of the last 15 makuuchi tournaments that Terunofuji has finished (wrestled on Day 15), he has either won or been runner up in 13 of them. This goes all the way back to 2017. It literally doesn't matter how long he is out. He comes back and wins.
Tobizaru's lucky he got his arm out of Teru's grip, because I'm pretty sure Teru aimed to keep it, after Tobi's slap and especially the leg sweep. Teru was HEATED. Edit: Shodai drives me nuts. Easily defeats the yokozuna, but ends up 4-11.
I always enjoy sumo primetime videos. Thanks for all the hard work the crew does to make these videos awesome!! I'm happy for teru and kotonowaka, soon to become kotozakura hopefully. I can't wait until spring, nice weather and sumo!!!
Congratulations to the Yokozuna on a well-earned victory! With everything he's accomplished and overcome so far, he's already a Dai-Yokozuna in my heart, but I still can't wait to see him get that magical 10th yusho.
I started watching sumo when Akebono was an ozeki. I absolutely fell in love with sumo. I look forward to every tournament and every video I can find about it. Thank you Hiro-San for advocating for the foreign fans. I know there aren’t many now but we are growing.
Hero, great clip. see if you can get a one on one interview wit Terunofuji like your others . I am always anxious when Terunofuji is playing. would like him to win 10 emperors cups.
A giant among Giants. Kotonowaka tried, but the yokozuna continues to have the agility , inteligence and the strengh to grab victory on his terms. A privilege to watch this fighters
Thanks Hiro Now that im having time to " recover " of Hatsu basho i can give Teru some praise💪 I didnt believe he would do so well. But obviusly im happy for hes strong performance . Hoshoryu stepping out Day 14 was biggest suprise and i was totaly in Panic.. But now lets enjoy Reruns until ..Haru😂😂
Kotonowaka was holding on, not for dear life but, I believe he sincerely wanted to win by holding on to the Yokozuna as dead-weight towards the end. 'Hey where's the monoii, you think there's any chance that I won, yeah he gave that look. I wonder what kind of Ozeki he'll make!
He didn't look nearly as pumped up compared with his penultimate match against Tobizaru. I think Terunofuji is a real boogeyman for most of the current rikishi, they just don't see any way to win. Kirishima is 0 - 11 against him, that's just mad!
Thought we were so close to a new Yokozuna with Kirishima this time around but Teru just picked him up like a baby and threw him out of the ring...sigh...There's levels to this
After Terunofuji lost for the second time, I thought he would go Kyujo. Glad he didn't. Got more dominant as the basho proceeded. Blew Kirby out of the Dohyo!
Re what Terunofuji said regarding Kotonowaka, Did he mean that he hope Kotonowaka would continue working towards becoming an Ozeki (since news wasn't out then), Or that he thought that Kotonowaka was future Yokozuna quality? By his expression, I would assume the second?
1st degree he's just saying that he hopes Kotonowaka keeps on improving with the aim to reach Yokozuna. 2nd degree he's telling Waka to git gud and come meet him at the top if he wants revenge.
It's always hard for me to decide on who I want to take the yusho, but can't deny, I was super happy Big Teru took it this time😁🙌! I hope he manages to get his double digit win goall!!
Hopefully someone steps up to the challenge and guns for a Yokozuna spot. Teru cant hold the spot solo for too long, Yusho's don't have that much excitement when a Yokozuna is absent but unfortunately most of the rikishi's now dont have that intensity or aura like Hakuho or Teru has. Asanoyama was a prime candidate pre suspension but now he gets riddled with injuries, Takakeisho has been an Ozeki for years now but cannot really initiate a decent Yokozuna run.
The look Terunofuji gave Tobizaru was about a hand too close to his eyes. He felt that it was done intentionally, and after seeing the replay multiple times I can see why he thought that. I can understand the anger and disdain Teru had towards Tobi though. Was it necessary? Probably not but I can understand it.
@@SupSatire It was on the brace, I believe he was going a leg sweep to take Terunofuji out. I saw the replays multiple times, it was a sweep type move.
@yankee_tango Oh it was absolutely a sweep, doesn't change the fact that it also probably hurt a hell of a lot on his busted knee and pissed the Terunosaurus off
Terunofuji really saved Suma with his manhandling of Kirishima. The Yokoshin would have had little choice but to promote Kirishima had he won the tournament but the quality his sumo is nowhere near Yokozuna.
I’m relatively new to sumo. May I ask why Teronufuji didn’t loose weight while recovering from his knee injury? It would surely reduce the strain on his knees. If you see how fast former rikishi lean down after their active career this must be an option for an active sumo wrestler?
@@docjoei2224 Oh anothet newbie or just wise azz. Well listen. It's a common rule that yokozuna will wrestle top 15. But it will be easily changed due to many unplanned circumstances like wrestlers leaving due to injury, wrestlers of same stable can not wrestle each other, highest winning tournament champion contenders meet in last days etc etc. In such instances next top rankers fill the spot or if it too late, then opposing wrestler gets fusen/free win. Got it?
Yokozuna is more of a title than a ranking. Once you attain it, demotion is not possible. You either perform as is expected of a Yokozuna, or you are forced to retire. If Teru had missed this basho there would've been serious talk of him having to retire on account of being too injured to perform. Now that he's shown he's not only healthy enough to perform at the expected level but straight up still capable of dominating a yusho, his leash is going to be that much longer.
