“Kick it long! Knock it down! Get your head on it!” - The term target man conjures images of a style of a bygone era. But as Alex Stewart explains, when used in the right way a target man can still be utilised today.

I see, so what you’re saying is... Man United should *re-sign* Marouane Fellaini. Time to bring back the big tree.
@mashfnch30
@mashfnch30 3 года назад
Fellaini was actually integral in Mourinho developing a rudimentary strategy to beat Liverpool's intense press at Man Utd, and the other teams that have been inspired by the German game and Gegenpressing. In fact I believe his team were the first ones to articulate publically the role of longer passes to beat the press, but obviously many other coaching teams have developed the concept too. It's not a surprise that once Ole came in, Fellaini couldn't get game time and left shortly after.

@mashfnch30
@mashfnch30 3 года назад
I think it's something he's inherited tactically given that Wesley is more traditionally a target man so he's adapted to some of those flourishes in Smiths strategies. All you technically need to play as a target man intrinsically is a good first touch and then the mental acuity to be able to position yourself in the best place to receive the ball. It's the fact that you're near centre backs that made them big men so often. You can use your positioning awareness and off the ball movement alongside more technical skills to perform the same job, it's just harder since you have to create distance between yourself + your markers and your teammates need to be able to pick you out. It's also worth mentioning that a wide target man doesn't have to be physically imposing as much as he needs the ability to control the ball, given his closest marker is often a full-back, this means that for a player like Watkins, who has been comfortable on the wing, he can drift out wide to receive when neccessary and it comes quite naturally to him.

Much like the use of Dzeko at Roma. Playing like a combination of a target man, and a false 9, the ball will be often played to him to beat a press via a long ball. Otherwise, he will drop deep to collect the ball and start a counter attack - see the goal started from his through ball to Karsdorp against Bologna

Best Target Ma of All Time - For Me Zlatan . That Man Has Numerous Number of Goals even Tho he Mostly Played as A Target Man. I Still think if he had stayed at Barca & Adjusted himself with the Systen , he would have won the UCL . Zlatan is tall , Strong , Finishing , kicking power , speed at that Time , Heading & those acro skills . Missed an Opportunity . He had skills too 🙌🏻. in Ajax , he was something else.

@@aaaaaaa4750 at juve it isn't morata who is acting like TM, but it's Ronaldo he's the one who's receiving the bal high up the pitch. And because he's more then an excellent header high long balls are also played towards him. Kane acts more like a false 9 with improved passing skills. Lukaku used to be a target man but at inter he plays more like a fox in the box because inter plays mostly on the counter. But he can defenitely play as TM if the put high pressure on the opponent.

Grant Holt springs to mind. Quite a limited player from a technical perspective, had no pace but scored goals at every level of English Football because he could hold the ball up, was great in the air, bullied defenders physically and could finish. If you played to the strengths he did have he was devastating.
