The Revenge of Analog: For Those Who Are Sick of the Digital World

Humans are analogue! We're literally sick of the digital world engulfing us. People are yearning for real things and authenticty. IMPOSSIBLE is sensuous and inspiring film about the revenge of analog. And the eccentric, crazy Austrian scientist, who saved the world's last Polaroid factory - just when Steve Jobs introduced the first iPhone. An entertaining underdog story of a very modern Don Quixote, shot on 35mm. And a sumptuous invitation to fall in love with real things again.

My film camera doesn’t invade my privacy and when I’m done taking a photo it does not try to steal my time and leaves me alone to do what I want when I want, not what advertisers want. Going back to analogue photography has actually freed my life in the long run somehow.

I had an art exhibit in my local area recently, that featured all analog pieces (small sculptures in walnut, and mixed with brass accents and some paint). I sold half of all I exhibited. It surprised me how many young people were drawn to them, and bought them. Digital work in the same gallery didn't seem as attractive (though there was some very amazing images, still and videos). I think there is a real value in digital work, but for me, the hands on work with analog (the smell of carved wood, the dust, the sounds made working on it, even the physical effort of carving and sanding, etc, makes the whole experience more rewarding for me). I think I'm going to go out and buy a Polaroid camera and film now, and incorporate it, somehow, into my future art projects! Thanks for this really inspiring film!

The world used to regard Kodak so highly that if it sneezed it was front page news. What a company, treated their workers wonderfully. Now it has gone…….my pension is far far less than planned, replaced by a government lesser pension, and my husband worked there his whole adult life. Even now, don’t expect future financial safety to prevail. The commercial world is ruthless. If the profit isn’t sky high, it won’t last.

I worked construction back in the 80s we had contracted jobs for Kodak in Boston, we built walls and dug out tunnels, For Pipes and Wires, that was one of the first Plants to be closed, I was a bit confused about Why, in hindsight i now understand, The Digital Age was in its infancy and about to Make an appearance on the world stage. Now i totally get what happened to so many Jobs. Id rather Go back to analog an old school tech. This is leading the world off a cliff.

@@bluenick4577 I did not wasted my money. You are missing the point. I have said , that I am sick of the digital world, digital photography as well. I already have digital cameras, and one of them is full frame - 61 mega pixel one ( Sony alpha A7RV ). So by using the same logic as you did, earlier - why would I waste my money on 12 mega pixel Nikon D3? I specifically wanted to return to analog photography, and 35mm film. As simple as that. Yes it is my choice, cause you can smell it.. You can feel it ... You have to work hard for each and every frame and you can't rush.

As a middle aged analog guy who never left it, this film leaves me with very mixed feelings. I saw this coming in the 1990s, perhaps before anyone recognized what was being lost, and I remember begging people to just respect (let alone love) Kodachrome (and Polaroid) as I did. No one listened. While I am overjoyed analog is being rescued, respected, cherished, and discovered by young people, this doc leaves me cold: It positions the whole thing as yet another play thing of the privileged class. Not enough time spent on the nitty gritty, barely a nod to the work of artists, far too much fashion, cult-of-personality, and wine tasting. Shallow in the extreme.

This was such a wonderful documentary. Myself, like so many others commenting, are walking down their analog road having acknowledged the benefits of the digital age but craving some relief from dependency on it. Doc was inspirational as a dreamer with true passion and was afforded the chance to sink money into projects time and again despite their outcome. The Edwin Land quotes were quite profound.

Good evening, I have a story to tell you. I was in Paris in 1979 in a tourist spot. I saw a Japanese couple with a Polaroid. I suggested to the couple to take a picture of them. The gentleman confidently handed me the camera, I took the photo, he looked at the result and told me it was not the simplest camera in the world... contrary to what the Polaroid campaign announced 😉 I am happy to tell you about it.

Wow, thank you for making this film. Work of art and i could "smell" it too! I started my own way back into analog before the Pandemic hit us, and it was a joy to make that journey again, to start shooting film and explore older cameras and lenses as well. But as you talk about a lot in this film, all things analog are worth preserving and using. So besides taking up film photography and developing my own film again, i always kept on using my record player and playing my Vinyl records on there. Reading books, writing etc. Love it, the feel, the smell, even the taste ;) Long live Analog!

Have you noticed your shows and movies are not available in the platform you pay for? Or that they're only available for "digital" purchase? Are you missing music that "surely" should be included in your monthly membership? What happens when you can't afford to pay the monthly membership or platform fees? You own absolutely nothing. You have access to nothing. What happens to all your pictures if Verizon's cloud completely crashes one day? Don't think it can't happen because systems crash, and they're taken over for ransom all the time (while files are stolen from them). Digital art is worthless. Are you going to print it out on your printer and hang it up or gift it to someone? I have nothing against the digital era. However, I believe it's a mistake to rely solely on it. There's nothing wrong with combining the analog and digital world.

I started in the analog world. B&W film and prints using Kodak system and Ansel Adams Zone System, shooting weddings assisting a top pro Monte Zucker then working at National Geographic reproducing photos and 4/C map relief with halftone contract screens and litho film. I started shooting with digital and editing in Photoshop in 1994 and posting my photos on a web server I managed and it was liberating. YMMV and surely does if your initial experience was on digital cameras. Shooting with film seems like it more artistic, just as in the days shooting film it felt more artistic if you lugged around a 4x5 or 8x10 view camera on a 20 pound tripod instead of a pair of Nikon Fs like I did. The irony is that 99% of the people who now use film then scan their negatives digitally then edit in Photoshop. In analog with the Zone System getting scene range to match print range was just the boring technical part. The artistry and editorialize happen in the darkroom doing hand puppet dodging and burning on the print.

Great music! This feels and sounds so comforting. A beautiful exposition of the value of analogue devices. The elegance and true value of these complex machines far-exceed the cheapness and intrusiveness of the digital world. We still have some of our analogue stuff, like 35 mm cameras, turn-table, stereo receiver. It all still works. It doesn't lose its integrity. Digital is garbage. I don't know what happened to our Polaroid camera, but I still have the photos. I would love to have my old landline and phones, as well. Now everything is already trash before you buy it. The digital technology is constantly evolving in order to keep the $$ rolling in for BIg Tech. And the worst of it is that we have become its slaves.

You can make anything that analog did but with digital it costs a fraction of the cost. If you romanticize analog, you're an idiot. Analog has it's place, sure what ever and it's not really ever going anywhere. The world has never stopped being analog and will never stop being analog. Even when everyone, everything, everywhere, all the time is digitized to feed the data-hungry AIs created by Big Tech, the analog world will be here. And it will not be less relevant. Corrupted data, pieces of tampered code, microchips with imperceptibly damaged tracks... and the entire computing world will begin to be impaired, providing more and more absurd results that will feed back into the system. Contrary to what is thought, the importance of the analog world will grow because the digital illusion throat will begin to suffer entropy. AIs degraded by entropy causing havoc in the real world is a more likely Terminator scenario than the one in the movies. But the analog world will move forward.

Very interesting film. I love analogue very much and I am convinced that it is an indispensable form for mental and physical well-being. I own thousands of vinyl records and cassettes, and a notable collection of vintage stereo systems. However, I also appreciate digital, which is now irreplaceable in our lives for its immediacy and enormous versatility, let's just think of the health and medical sector; I don't think anyone feels nostalgic for vintage in this sector... In the audio field it offers me a different sound and immediate usability of high/very high quality and, in fact, I also own CD players, burners, mainframes, professional digital signal processors for the creation of audio files and CDs. Personally I believe that this is just the beginning of a digital era that will go through many forms, and probably, we will also have to go through a digital "Middle Ages" to arrive, perhaps at a new form of society where analogue walks alongside of digital, complementing each other.

Everything in life has tradeoffs. I'm 67 years old and prefer the modern conveniences over older technology. I used a 35mm camera for years and while I admit that the picture quality of a mid-range 35mm film camera (the optics are the most important part) will be far better than even a 16Mp digital, dealing with 35mm film was always a hassle and you've got so many more options and features with a digital camera not to mention that if you want to send a 35mm pic to your friends, you''ll have to scan the photo anyway. That's analog to digital. :) I'd say that if you want better pics, go out a buy a 24MegaPixel camera - will cost $500 or more but you should be happy with the pics. But hey if you don't mind the annoyances and limitations of using 35mm film then have fun!
@newtronix
@newtronix 3 дня назад
I guess that's why he's gone for recreating polaroid. It's the sort of analog version of digital convenience. I mean it's fun but not really good quality for imaging. It never was. It's like a medium in itself. 35mm or medium format is something else again and these days is a proper labour of love. Plus you need to know how to take a photo without seeing the result until processing. Proper skill needed. Not like now.

I don't like the way the title is stated, as revenge. And in general the emotional foundation abounds, the shock for emotion. The opposition between digital as false and analog as true is a pretty silly idea. On the other hand, in the case of the Polaroid we are talking about a technology or product that has no replacement, I believe that there is still no portable, wireless printer for photos. One of the differences between analog and digital is speed and in this particular case it is an analog device that is faster than a digital system to have a photo on paper. In short, it is for premature romantics who want the image on paper quickly and cannot wait a little longer to have better quality. Contrary to what is said here, it is precisely digitization that allows an image file system to be maintained in a stable and secure manner. So finally in photography digital saved the legacy of analog.
