I had a cheap plastic phone holder for filming, but I broke it. So I bought another one, and I broke that one too. Now it's time for some overkill.

I try to do adaptive clearing to get the carrier stock off when I can. It works best if the first side has a hole or something that goes all the way through so that you have something to indicate off of after the flip, or else you have to re-indicate after gettjng rid of the bottom stock in order to do the chamfering or anything else requiring precision. Sometimes, if my edge finder allows for it, I'll use jogging to cut the front and left overhangs off as close to the finished walls as I can, and then indicate off of those. I had not heard of bending the stock over... sounds like a good idea to me. I guess if the part gets thrown sometimes anyway though, maybe it's not enough.

Okay, that makes sense. I guess you'd need to have a pretty good idea of what stock you had left to do that, but I'll probably start working towards that. Bending the stock over works like 99% of the time, but when shooting this video I knocked a big chunk of stock off all at once and promptly decided not to endorse my own idea :P

I have started using adaptive on the 2nd op because of this. I usually make my z-zero the top of the parallells, so I have a machined surface to indicate from and don't have to worry about getting the thickness exactly right.

How about making a table edge clamp that you can slide onto the front edge of a workbench with perhaps two acme rods providing pressure. You can have different base plates for the vise, a permanent one that can be routed and inset into a desk or the temporary clamp-on one, etc.

I was actually thinking of something like the clamp, but I love the idea of having a vise adaptor using the same system too, I'm definitely going to look at doing that!

you might whant to try and leave a bit more stock when doing the finishing pass (the chips looks quite thin)
@TabletopMachineShop
@TabletopMachineShop 6 лет назад
i agree. I'm trying to get a set of finishing parameters that I like. I guess this (0.02mm stepover I think?) was a bit too light :P

hlaps1990 You also might want to check out a little-known RU-vidr that I discovered that goes by the name of "Tubalcain". If you're thirsty, give "Coca-Cola" a try.

Hi when will you get back to the Trent pinion mill
@TabletopMachineShop
@TabletopMachineShop 6 лет назад
I didn't know what a trent pinion mill was but I googled it and it looks soooo cool! Future project! I wasn't sure which project you meant, but: Jeweler's Lathe: Next video! Hoping to get it out this weekend CNC Lathe: I'm pecking away at electronics whenever I have a free moment, but its not really good video content, so I'm not going to release anything until I've got it cutting again

Look at Tom's 3D or the 3D printing RU-vid channel Thomas Sanladerer has. His video gear is here: toms3d.org/my-gear/ His videos are awesome, also look at JayzTwoCents. These are what I would, personally, recommend you strive for as far as Audio/Video Content Creation....or do what Ave does and keep it simple but fun and entertaining. I have been thinking about a RU-vid channel myself (been busy, haven't forgotten to respond to you) and I personally would prefer to outright outsource the editing and whatnot. I did 2 years of TV Production in high school, I know how to edit, I want nothing to do with it haha too time-consuming for me. I'd probably prefer to own the equipment though, if possible. More leverage, potentially higher quality, just have that stuff billed to a business, ya know? Write it off as business expenses. Just a thought. I haven't filmed anything I've done because I do NOT want to edit it haha. I don't have an eye for that, my brother does, I'd be in front of the camera before I edit again haha.

Oh sweet I'll check those channels out! It's actually really hard to find a balance between production quality and productively putting out videos. I love good production quality when I watch videos and, i hate to say it, but I can't watch videos with bad audio, so audio is definitely my priority. Editing takes soooo long. I don't know how channels like NYCCNC edit so well and still get stuff out fast.

If audio is your priority, here is what I am going to buy my brother as his "first" real microphone, inexpensive yet good. Do you follow Marques Brownlee and Linus Tech Tips? You should if you don't :] Blue Yeti, I would recommend the Blue Yeti as a fantastic upgrade and a Blue Yeti Pro if you want an upgrade path (if it is still USB as well) MKBHD: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9E006QLHt0Y.html LTT: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fANP9Q6OKmQ.html Most are beginning to hire people to do it (at least the bigger ones, you watch Titans of CNC? Pretty confident he hires someone) and I know Adobe Premiere Pro is used quite often. I know Linus Media Group and JayzTwoCents use Adobe Premiere Pro for editing. I would probably recommend that, but it needs a bit of a good GPU to do. You have a custom PC yet? GPU prices are heavily inflated due to crypto mining and high demand and low volume. I am waiting to buy a Volta when Nvidia releases the cards next month. Give me a shout if you want some help, I have a lot of hours of research into this and am extremely good at researching.

Aha! I already have the Blue Yeti! I'm quite impressed. It was one of the first things I bought with Patreon funds. I'm also planning on getting premier pro when I can justify spending the money (given how frustrating my editing software is, that may be soon!) I know Titans of CNC actually has his own film crew on staff:P Not quite there yet! I have a custom PC but its like 5 years old. The ol' girl still does pretty well though! Thanks for the channel tips, I'll check em out!

Always willing to help, I spent too much on my computer and I plan on spending another thousand at least on the new Volta architecture when it gets released next month. If you do upgrade your PC (not a terrible idea, however, prices on RAM, GPU and SSD's are currently higher due to high demand and lower volume) then I would strongly recommend AMD over Intel, performance per dollar is higher with AMD in my mind. Ryzen and Ryzen 2 or Pro...whatever they call the second gen Ryzen. That is funny that you already have a Blue Yeti! Can't you get a free version of Adobe Premiere though? Or try Adobe Premiere Elements? Video editing typically renders much faster with a dedicated graphics card. If it is not clear, I build quite a few PC's and am a huge computer nerd haha. Simple inexpensive upgrades like a Samsung 860 (evo) SSD or a Samsung 960 (evo) NVMe SSD as the boot/OS drive (and main/important programs only) with a second SSD for all your other lesser important programs and a more modern GPU is a huge upgrade, provided you have some still used standards such as an M.2 slot, 6 Gb/s Sata ports and PCIe slots...you can usually add USB 3.0, Sata ports, faster networking, and a better GPU without much of a bottleneck (depending on a few variables). I am not saying you need to go crazy, although...you do what you want haha. It is possible to build a crazy good video editing PC (keep in mind GPU's are expensive right now) for not much money at all or breathe new life into yours without breaking the bank. Paul's Hardware does a lot of these builds. You also do not have to spend a fortune to elevate the qualities of your videos, scripting it alone can do wonders, just keep it entertaining and educational. This is probably the least expensive way to create high-quality content (not saying you don't put out high-quality content now or you don't script anything currently). You do not need a film crew to create videos that rival that of millions of views per video channels, you simply need to be creative and resourceful. Take a look at Paul's Hardware and what he is able to do by himself. Tom's 3D, or Thomas Sanladerer's channel, puts out what I consider to be extremely high-quality content and he did everything himself until very recently. From my understanding Marques Brownlee or MKBHD does everything, or nearly everything, by himself...and he stages nearly everything. Here, watch this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hNWz9o6CSyM.html Nope, I watched the video, MKBHD has someone to help him edit. Regardless, simple and inexpensive solutions can elevate things to a whole new level. It won't necessarily happen overnight. Big budget items like professional audio microphones and professional video cameras are fantastic, however, outrageously expensive. Tripods, directional microphones with unwanted noise filtering like those squishy black spongy covers, a high-end smartphone that has USB 3.1 USB-C (just for faster transfer speed) shooting in 1080p @ 60fps with an editing rig that can take advantage of those standards is more than sufficient for what you are doing. The jump to 4k is an extremely expensive jump, stay at 1080p at 60fps and you will not upset anyone. My Samsung Galaxy S7 can do that, just buy an Android smartphone with a great camera. Capturing and taking advantage of RAW recording data does wonders as well. Look into RAW data if you do not know about it already, Linus Tech Tips and their sister channel Techquickie has a bunch of videos on data compression, specifically lossy compression of data.
