Very sad to see the souks with little or no people. Back in 2001-2005 there was no place for you to walk as it was packed with tourists from around the world. After 2006 - Israel war on Lebanon things changed and since then the decline in tourists and economical situation got worse. The country is beautiful. What a pity! Hope peace returns and everything gets back to normal.

Greenery/trees everywhere in Beirut. Many different neighborhoods to visit. The pre-war Souks of Beirut looked nothing like the rebuilt Souks of today! One certain company with big money making plans rebuilt the area, that did quite well for a few years, only to crash really bad about 8/10 years ago. Streets are empty because nobody has the money to buy things, can hardly afford to buy food! Younger generations work and live abroad mainly in other Arab/Gulf countries. Huge diasporas also in Canada/USA/France .... Lebanese expats pack the country in the Summer season, less so this year because of the war next door ....... Gorgeous country going through really bad times ... problem very difficult to solve! For first time visitors better have someone to show you around and to take you to the mountains/valleys all over and must see places not to be missed.

Nah those gentrified areas have always been mostly empty. The city center was rebuilt for tourists and Lebanese expats not us resident Lebanese, which is why it looks so "fancy" (and awful). Back when i was a teen in the 2000s i could never afford to go grab a coffee or food in the city center.

My experiences were 99% good.The Lebanese people (in general) have a great capacity for enjoying life , from a simple cup of coffee, to an impromtu trip to by 'service to Batrun for a glass of lemonade', to an OTT wedding. Living in Ras Beirut close to AUB, and with language centre students from a great variety of backgrounds, as well as a lebanese flat mate from Saida, I was fortunate to begin to understand the complexities of Lebananese society, and the political hierarchy ( a census hadn't been taken for decades, in order to preserve the status quo). My social network was very mixed. I was under 30 and thought I was immortal! By July 1974, with armed military on roof tops, and the odd tank, and sandbags on strategic corners, sadly, it was time to go. @@carlmoubarak4302

What the hell is this Beirut?? There's hardly anyone there! It's crazy. How awful. But I lived there so long ago, after the end of the Six Day War when I was only 23. I married a Lebanese Muslim in the US; I'm an American. This place you're in now looks nothing like the Beirut that I knew. And no, it's not empty because you went through on a Saturday. It looks like an ugly dead zone, an alternate universe within a lively, diverse city. But thanks for showing us what you saw there.

Im Leb born in Boston. I stick to villages much easier to meet pp, invite you in their homes. Area you covered is most gentrified, stuck-up, self-centered, no Lebanese feel to it. I go to Zahle, Jdeeta next to it, (my family tribe) villages like Kfarneess, Wadee-sitt. Alay is allright. I wish you can carry conversation with a local about their take on economy , culture
@idilhussein-ui5bd
@idilhussein-ui5bd 3 месяца назад
Would love to visit Lebanon someday. But your take is on point. It seems Beirut is a wannabe Paris, the way they rebuilt the city seems as though they want to shed the lebanese and look more to Europe, perhaps to invite back tourists. Wish I could visit the places you mention to get the real Lebanon.

Begging your pardon but Lebanon is one of the rare countries not to have signed a peace treaty with IsraHell and not to bend a knee to their will, even with immense pressure from the European Union AND the U.S. closing a few stores would be petty, WE the people boycott them (which we are doing), and supporting our resistance, voting with your wallet is the strongest thing you can do … let them open whatever they wish, and pay taxes, the people are choosing what they want … that’s the utmost form of democracy. Zahhar and not “Zahara”, is a local business that belongs to the Zahhar family, not a foreign business, unless you meant Zara then we agree …

Take Nothing Personal , but you misunderstood the whole country concept ..Lebanon is not a place to go and reside in one place... it's a small country ... so one day for ( beirut - jounieh - jeitta ) - one day for chouf , one day for ( batroun and byblos and all it's surrounding ) - one day for south Lebanon - one day for baalbek - one day for chowen .... so on ... but definitely you don't spend 3 days in one city !!! ....
