Getting into the tank is basically an eff you to your friends and family. However, not everyone has the luxury of a supportive family and good friends. I personally wouldn't do it, but I can see why some would.

The American animators got 'Munchies' wrong. Karl is referring to the milk chocolate covered sweets with a soft caramel and crisp biscuit centre, made by Nestle.

Going into the tank is fine if you have no family & friends but if you do, you're removing your ability to help out those close to you if they ever need it...everyone is part of someone's key support network, whether that is advice, comfort or more material things. You might just have made someone else's life a lot harder because you wanted to check out.

Would i get into that tank? To me if somethings too good to be true it probably isn't. If maybe you've lived a pretty bad life, nothing goes your way ever then why not your life is screwed anyway i guess but can't help but think there's some kind of consequence behind this.

Philosophy teacher here, the tank question has two important considerations. First, the reality. Second, the social responsibility. Most people object by saying, "It wouldn't be real." That's correct, except notice that we're not positive this reality is real either. This could be a simulation. Do we lose sleep over that possibility? Do we really care? No. This feels like reality so we believe it is. But it might not be. Therefore you can't say, "this is real so it's preferable to the tank." You don't know this is real. IF we're not in a simulation and the real world is real, THEN it would make sense to prefer the real over the virtual. But why? By definition the virtual tank reality is designed to be more enjoyable, more fulfilling, just better in every way. There are two reasons to prefer the real. First, you feel that participating in real reality is building towards something. Building up humanity, building up the Earth, building up your family, whatever. Something bigger than your own life. Building towards some goal that only has meaning if *actually* done, not virtually done. But people make this argument vaguely. Be specific. We all feel like we're contributing and building towards something, but are we? What is it? What's that meaningful goal we're striving towards? You need to have that answer before you can use this argument against getting in the tank. The second objection is moral social responsibility. You can't just abandon this society, including your family, for a virtual one. Even if you don't have a family, there are GOOD things you could do in this world. You're removing that goodness from the world if you get in the tank. You have a moral obligation to contribute to society, and the virtual society doesn't count. You can't have moral obligations to simulated, non-conscious people in a tank. Presuming real reality is real, then this is the world you have an obligation to. If you think it's a 50/50 toss-up between whether or not this real world is actually a simulation, get in the tank. If they're both simulations the tank is just a better one. If you think this world is real but you just don't care about other people and don't think there's anything in the world worth contributing to, get in the tank.
