Riding a section with tight berms can be a daunting experience, especially if they are down hill switchbacks. There are a few key things to think about in these situations and simply applying The TRS Standard will have you ripping through those sweet berms and smiling bigger than you ever imagined!
Please consider supporting the Patreon platform. I REALLY dig making this content and the more support we can get, the more rad stuff we can do! Be sure to check out the "FULL SEND" level where you can submit a video for me to analyze and breakdown: / therichdrew
I'd also love to have you follow along on my daily adventures on Instagram. Keep your eyes peeled for random tips. If this platform hits 10K, I'll do a daily tip! www.instagram....
Keep your eyes peeled for a Ride Series Clinic near you OR decide take a trip to Bentonville, Sedona, or Dallas to attend: www.therideser...
Here are the key points to remember:
1) Vision: Eyes high and looking ahead. See where you are going and be cognizant of where the trail is heading.
2) Entry Point: Come in as far outside as possible to give yourself as much room as you can. Enter high on the berm and....
3) Inside Pedal UP: I prefer to get that inside pedal up to unweight it in case I need to get that foot off. I also want the outside pedal down to give me a firm base to stand on.
4) LEAN THE BIKE: This is gonna be relative of course, but you need to at least match the angle of the berm with your bike.
Have fun out there! #howto #richdrew #mountainbike #bentonville

Hey Rich, I want to say that I am really glad that I have found this channel. I started riding bikes last August here in Kuwait while I am deployed here, I am in my 40’s and have not been in a bike since I was a kid. I am really hoping to visit you and the OZ trails when I get back to the states. Please keep the content coming so I can get ready. Thanks again for your help.

@blameitonben
@blameitonben 4 года назад
It seems like a critical issue is gravity and radius. At the lower part of the berm the wall isn't steep enough for you to create gravity as you point out. Another issue is the radius is tight at the bottom. The higher up you get the easier the turn is!!!

Thanks Rich! Shoutout from Ketchum, Curios why not have pedals flat on berms rather than outside pedal down? I thought outside down + Bike/body separation was just for flatter corners. Thanks!
@tomsadventures1001
@tomsadventures1001 4 года назад
So that front fork is dialed. Your sag and compression/rebound is set perfectly which allows you to rail it.

Why do some many people tell me to keep my pedals flat on corners, but weight the outside pedal
@Grivasik
@Grivasik 4 года назад
Hi Rich, Thanks for the video. What about arms, I saw on other channels, that in order to lean your bike into the turn, you need to push the handlebars with your outside arm. Is that correct, is that important? Because I find myself naturally pushing/turning more with my inside arm, but I'm trying to change that.
@calvin2032
@calvin2032 4 года назад
Bend and Extend. Inside arm is straight and outside is bent 90 degrees. If your arms can’t get in the position that means your chest isn’t low enough. Having a lower chest is the most important position. Cornering is accomplished by tilting, not steering, so don’t concern yourself with thinking about that and keep even pressure with your arms until the foundation is second nature. On a good berm you can lean with the bike vs tilting the bike and keeping your hips to the outside. On flat terrain the bike tilt and body position is far more vital in keeping grip. Practice by sessioning a corner. Start going super slow and increasing your speed each time. If you go in slow and your chest low, you will find more grip than you ever thought you’d manage

Thanks! Great tips. I have no problem on left hand turns, but right hand turns I feel like the bike just won’t move. Is this common?
@richdrewtherideseries
@richdrewtherideseries 4 года назад
Brett, you my friend are a Zoolander...you need to be an ambi turner! It's VERY common! I think you just need to get yourself in a position where you can slowly work on it in an environment that is comfortable. Start out on the street in front of your house or a parking lot, then move it to the grass, then the trail.

awesome video thanks for the great knowledge! one question, when you were linking the switchbacks and i think its was the last one at bottom did you have to use your brake in the corner or was that the tire skidding? time was 3:38..
@richdrewtherideseries
@richdrewtherideseries 4 года назад
Thanks Jonathan! I did what's called a "Scandinavian Flick" into the turn to scrub speed a bit. The term comes from rally racing actually. You can come into the turn pretty hot and need to apply a slight amount of brake at times, but I don't think I was on the brakes in the video.

Rich Drew thanks for the reply! The part where it sounded like you grabbed the brake was right around the apex of that berm right after your scandi flick. That’s what made me want to ask you. I couldn’t tell if you were having to use a little bit of brake because you came in too hot or if that was your tires just breaking traction..? Is there ever a situation where it’s ok to use your brake in a turn? Again thanks for the responses
@Petr388
@Petr388 4 года назад
Good video. Just one question - is it not better to keep your pedals leveled in such high berms? You can get all the support you need and with two leg pushing down the ground you have more power to resist the g forces....
@richdrewtherideseries
@richdrewtherideseries 4 года назад
I just prefer the inside up on turns like this. I think a bike park scenario with big, fast berms might be a different story. There’s still a chance to slide out in these berms and I’d prefer to be ready to get my inside foot down
@Petr388
@Petr388 4 года назад
@@richdrewtherideseries OK thank you for your reply. I am now watching video from slovak professional downhill rider Miro Baranek and he is recomending staying lower in the berm, because if your your wheel washes out a bit, there is still some space to catch you...Hundred people, hundred different opinions :D I guess I will rather use your advise to come high, stay most of the turn in center and then exit center or low...
@trenthamlin4805

How bad is brakeing throught turn? I always do it and I suck at Burms I get off the front brake and drag the rear and I’m a lot better. Should I pratice breaking first and not on the brakes at all through a Berm? The brakes pushing me upright?
@ironore8677
@ironore8677 4 года назад
You always talk about weight over bottom bracket....does this mean your weight is slightly ahead of what your seated position would normally be? I’ve been trying this when jumping and it seems to help however I haven’t been able to test on any large jumps yet
@richdrewtherideseries
@richdrewtherideseries 4 года назад
basically, yes. Most modern bikes seat tube angles that position the seat a bit behind the bottom bracket if we're looking from the side. Having your hips as close to you can to the center of the bike (bottom bracket) will allow you the most amount of movement possible and help you keep enough weight on the front of the bike.

Hey Dennis! I think that's a bit more of an "advanced" element of negotiating turns like this. I"ll certainly address it at some point, I just wanted to keep this one as straight forward as possible.
