If you haven't seen them yet, check out the 7 Common Jumping Mistakes and How To Jump videos below:
7 Common Mistakes - • 7 Common Jumping Mista...
How To Jump - • The Ride Series How To...
The biggest issue I see with a jump like this is riders carrying too much speed into the take off. One of the main things to think about in a situation like this is dealing with the energy created on the takeoff. The beauty of this particular setting is that you can literally roll right off the top of the jump and land to flat. It provides the perfect opportunity to SLOWLY bring in more speed with each run and get comfortable with the energy that is being created and allows you to work the timing of your body opening up as you go up the take off.
Manny does a great job working through that process here. He slowly brings more speed on each attempt and generates more lift each time. NOW, pay attention to his arms in each slow motion clip: His elbows are very bent and his torso is very straight up and down. The next step for Manny would be to slowly move is torso back (more in line with the bike as it's pointed up the takeoff) and this would help get his arms a bit straighter. You can clearly see the front wheel dropping away from him and it comes off the takeoff. Having his torso back and arms straighter would alleviate some of this.
We talked about it and the end of the video and for a bit longer after we wrapped. He wasn't even aware of how badly it was happening until he saw this video.
What do you do now that you've watched this? Well, you find a spot to practice. If you don't have something like this, find something as close to it as you can. The basic technique can be practiced on a simple tabletop and carried over to a step up like this. Once you're comfortable dealing with the energy of the tabletop, it's just a matter of slowly increasing your speed in a step up situation and getting comfortable with the energy.
I hope this sheds some light on hitting a feature like this. Please drop me any questions or feedback below. Share the page as much as you can and lets keep growing so we can do even more How Tos and Bike Reviews.

This Ride Series episode really shows budding jumpers what’s possible...THIS IS DOABLE STUFF guys and gals! With a jumping base it’s all about repetition and then going back to the videos (including those of you in action) to refine and clean things up. Then the journey shifts gears with nuances and steeze, like Rich said, it really is a journey, so don’t rush it...enjoy it! Fa-Realz Rich Drew and Crew!!! Gracias 👊💚👨‍👩‍👦‍👦

Absolutely THE best instructional videos on RU-vid by far! I love it. Rich the other day a guy was telling me his son rips up the trails at age 15 yet dad just keeps crashing, he can’t wheelie or manual and it getting injured way too much, I explained how to do these things as best I could, he said dude I’ve learned more in our conversation than in all of my time riding, I can’t explain it as well as you do but he’s so excited to go and try, I’m going to send him links to your channel - well done on another superb production 👍🏻

It is really amazing that you can spot the nuance of the minor mistakes people do when things happen so quickly. I can only tell it from the slow motion. Not everyone can be a good rider, and not every good rider can make other people a better rider like you.

Practice bunnyhops, then ride a lot of little jumps. Once you get really comfortable, you’ll find it’s not that bad and work your way up.

What do you mean when you say "open up"? Should you feel like your standing up and leaning back?!? Can you describe what we should be feeling like when "opening up". Love your video's by the way, they have been very helpful.

Hey Rich, great vid.. Just watched it again... Q: I've gotten comfortable going up the lips without collapsing but don't seem to straighten my legs enough on takeoff. How could I get you to watch a 5 or 10sec clip and give me some pointers... Ps. I'm in South Africa otherwise I'd do a TRS clinic 😁
@richdrewtherideseries
@richdrewtherideseries 3 года назад
Hey Shane! It takes some time getting comfortable with the torso positioning. Most riders feel like they are going to flip over backwards and it's a bit unnerving. Maybe we can get out to South Africa someday!

Rich Great video. Quick question I was just at slaughter one this past weekend for the first time and it was awesome. I think is that I could not figure out where to access hammer down. Any info on that would be awesome. Thanks!

Thanks Redtop! The top of this trail is just east of NW A St. You can come down All American and turn left into Black Apple, then follow Ozone up to the top of this one. It's a blast!

Dude, I have a question. For jumps that has a long ramp before the lip. Where should the rider do the pre-loading. Love your videos btw. Thanks in advance

Hi Rich, i really like your content. I am from Austria and since in Schladming there is a new Jumpline, i am really keen to jump the huge ones too. I would consider myself a decent jumper, but honestly there are a view jumps on that line that scare the sh..t out of me since having a bad left hand from an incident back in 2014. However, i am comfortable as long as i can bring my body back from compressing sequence to stand the stand up or stand tall moment. For those jumps its fine. But there are a view jumps that are so fast and steep there, that i watch people jumping it in a crouched body position and i dont mean that they are scrubbing it, its more like the compression is so hard, that when leaving the lip, the shocks are still hard compressed and not on the way to open up again.....hope that makes sense. But long story short question....do you also take jumps sometimes without having the legs extended when leaving the lips...caused by too much force in the compression? I added a video, at 00:46 and 00:54 you see what i described....crouched position when leaving the lip, but is it just bad technique or sometimes inevitable? An answer would be super cool. thx and BR Martin ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M8Tq62m99-g.html

Great video as always! We plan on making a trip down from Missouri, is Hammer Down the name of the trail? This section was definitely not built last time we were there. Would really like to check this spot out!

It's brand new, and I think Flozone is the official name now. If you've ridden Ozone, it starts at the exact same spot. Check it out on Trailforks.

Great video! Do you think getting bucked forward on jumps is mostly due to not preloading the rear enough with fast rebound or is it still mostly body position?
@richdrewtherideseries
@richdrewtherideseries 4 года назад
Could be a couple of things Adam: 1) coming in with too much speed and not getting your body opened up soon enough (the bike pushes back against you) 2) having your weight too far back and overloading the suspension.
@adamweb
@adamweb 4 года назад
@@richdrewtherideseries Thanks Rich! I think I'm too far back... I had a friend record me and my instinct is to get back like I'm descending but you're right it's all about being neutral over the pedals!

My problem was that I came up too early trying to do kind of bunnyhop on the transition but released too early before the lip. This led to a lift of the bike before end of lip and that is why my back wheel got some extra kick at the end so I landed Front wheel First.

Do you also have to go a little bit backwards with your body (slight manual impuls) once the front wheel leaves the lip and then afterwars when the back wheel leaves the lip go up with your body?

Richie, How do you stay straight in flight, without leaning to one side or the other on takeoff? Do you squeeze your legs together on the saddle or some other trick?

Haha!! I love adding that into every video when I can. I will say this: Look at the majority of mtb riders as a percentage and they don't want anything to do with Whistler. They want mellow, beginner friendly trails like we have TONS of here in Bentonville.

Awesome vid.. Some help pls... I tend to squat down and preload but think I'm bending my legs too much and then when I hit the transition as I push in I tend to not be able to hold it (almost straighten legs) to the top of the lip, I just bend my legs and suck it up.. Any advice.. (I practice on a kicker alot as it's all I have handy) thx dude

Hey Shane! Try coming in slower and see if you can get the timing down. You need to compress as you come into the takeoff and then open up with the bike as you come off.
