One of my favorite horror films, and one which I think improves on the original (actually giving a reason for the week delay, for example). I love Samarra's ultra-ambiguous line about her father, "But he doesn't know." We never really find out what he doesn't know. It also has a sort of The Conversation-inspired bit of audio play, where the first time we hear her say, in response to the doctor saying that she doesn't want to hurt people, "But I do, and I'm sorry," it comes across as her saying that she's sorry that she does hurt people. When we hear it more clearly near the end, it sounds much more like she meant, "But I do WANT TO hurt people, and I'm sorry," with that last phrase not sounding sincere in the least. You should check out the 1981 film Ghost Story. It has a similar feel, and some of the material that wasn't in the Japanese film (such as water leaking out of odd places when the ghost is around) seems to have been cribbed from that film.
@alexandervelez9507
@alexandervelez9507 Год назад
well the full line was “he wants me to go away, but he doesn’t know” so i figured it was pretty clear she was saying he doesn’t know that she would never go away because she’s a demon.

I've seen this movie twice before this movie was even made: "Ringu" (the Japanese original), and "The Ring Virus" (the year-later Korean remake.) Including this American remake, all three versions were a new experience. Same story lines, yes. Same plotlines, yes. It was still interesting to see three different cultures approach to the same source material.

I remember the first time I saw this - my brothers and cousins and my brother's wife were all sitting around the basement watching it. My youngest brother had seen it in theatre. I had to go to the bathroom around the part where Rachael ended up in the well. Then she gets her out. Ambulance and stuff. You can survive 7 days... yada yada. I figure, movie done. I can go to the bathroom now. I start to get up and my brother just says... "Wait." In the most ominous voice I'd ever heard from him. He just pointed to the screen so I sat back down. Good thing I have a strong bladder because when she crawled out of that TV screen, HOLY SHITE! We all lost our collective minds. None of us had seen the original or even heard of it then actually. And those effects were completely new to us a creepy as all fuck. One of my most memorable movie watches ever.

well to be fair to the whole die at 10 pm thing, when assessing a body you can't tell when it died in ten minute increments, just ~around the time she died plus if the girl with her was used as a witness, she'd probably say 10 pm exactly

well by the films own explanation the videotape was created by samaras mind powers as she was in the well and imprinted the images and death thing on to the tape in the cabin above, so they could've had similar locations and things as the ones that rachel finds in books and newspapers but the same exact images ? kind of ruins the immersion

One of my favorite horror movie... I actually have trouble watching it now. I have a hard time dealing the subsequent anxiety I get from it, lol. Ah, old age is getting to me... I always had the theory that Samarra was actually not adopted and was the legit daughter of the Morgans (if you ignore the sequel of course, and you should). It's mentioned that the Morgans went to the mainland and traveled the world to find means by which to conceive, then came back to the island with an "adopted" daughter... My theory is that they did find a way, but that it was unnatural or ritualistic, hence why they would stay quiet about it. Going against the natural order of things however got them something wrong in return. That's how I like to see it anyway. I'm glad the movie didn't try to explain too much why Samarra is evil, it's better left to the imagination.
@deusdeaconReviews
@deusdeaconReviews 7 лет назад
The best thing about that theory is it completely erases the fuck awful sequel off the planet.
@xen0bia
@xen0bia 7 лет назад
Deusdaecon Reviews Yeah... I saw the sequel only once, in theater. I was so excited for it too... I came out of there thinking "What a piece of shit". You know, the first movie's ending left you with this sinking feeling of dread with the realization that Samarra's evil couldn't be defeated, you could only propagate her curse to escape death. She was this unnatural, unstoppable force, even in death. Then you take this awesome concept and completey ruin it with the sequel, turning Samarra into a pretty pathetic villain who just wants a new mommy... Awful, just awful...

I'll tell you one on me. I saw this movie at home and thought, "Okay, pretty good, but I'm Not Scared!" And I wasn't. Until I went to bed. And about two in the morning, the television in my room kicked on by itself, and I screamed loud enough to wake the entire family. What had happened was my daughters had been playing with the remote, and set the Timed Watch function on the TV, so that it would turn itself on at, you guessed it, 2 in the morning. Yeah; I'm not living that one down anytime soon. And NO MORE HORROR MOVIES LATE AT NIGHT!

Seattle appears to be the perfect area to place this movie as the climate and flora are very much like those of regions of coastal Japan. Japanese Maples, hydrangeas, azaleas, etc. grow quite well here due to the cloudy and cool climate. Despite this, Seattle is still in USDA Growth Zone 9....the same zone as Jacksonville, FL.

Rachel was probably just flustered & creeped out, but not totally convinced of the supernatural element when she showed Noah. The fact that additional footage beyond the frame exists & we learn that the tape has no internal data probably fully convinced her that something more was going on, explaining her more cautious approach after Noah’s assistant walked in.

just on the time of death thing, the only way they would know it was only 10min after 10pm is if the friend was able to tell them, which might not be the most important part of the event on her mind if she was cogent enough to communicate it. Fun Fact; time of death can be VERY hard to narrow down just going off of the body, you can use rigormortis and blood pooling but that can change depending on the temperature and other factors, it's not going to tell you down to the minute.

It's such a good piece of supernatural horror for me, but it's not for those who want buckets of gore and big frights-- it's much more of a slow-burn type experience that crawls under the skin. This has become a favorite of mine; it feels like an eerie Nancy Drew mystery tale with ghostly goings-on and some unsettling moments peppered in. "The Ring" has, among other good elements, a wonderful music score that adds so much emotion and chills to the story.

The last bit would have been better if theyd done the japanese thing of just seeing her eye in a weird way as honestly seeing a child body with what looked like a 40 a day habit miners grumpy face was kinda funny.

The i saw her face jumpscare got etched in my mind when I saw it in the cinema. I came home and saw I dvd I had bought earlier that day. I looked at the TV and said fuck thst. I didn't sleep right for two weeks after and to this day I struggle to watch it alone. With others its no problem but alone I go straight back to that first viewing. I love this fucking movie..

I wrote an article a while back about how the American remake is better than the Japanese original. Not because of CGI or picture quality or anything, so not to take anything away from the Japanese original. But the twist near the conclusion is much more predictable if you know something about Japanese culture and their perspective on ghosts, hauntings, and curses. In western society our perspective is very different, and that's why we assume the curse is lifted when Samara's body is discovered and we know what happened to her. That western perspective is what allows the twist to hit to hard, and not just be another corny "the villain always returns for a sequel" hack job we expect from horror films.

when it comes to the phone thing, lets be honest thats just some common courtesy on samaras part she doesn't have to say anything it'll affect you regardless but at least she's nice enough to tell you how long ya got, also in this and the sequel it does seem to be you need to watch the tape all the way through.
@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017

Probably the last genuinely scary "horror" film I have seen. Everything since has been recycled tropes and jump-scares.

6:11 - 6:18 😂😂Good one, @Deusdaecon. Funny though that you missed Spontaneous Combustion (1990) by Tobe Hooper as another cursed video tape. Not that I dislike the movie, but it's just I feel as a movie starring Brad Dourif, it doesn't get much attention.

Actually there's a few there that could be labeled as "cursed", like 'Rage To Kill', 'Shattered', 'The Looking Glass War', 'The Black Bird', 'Quest for the Mighty Sword', 'The Fly 2', 'C.H.U.D.', etc. Oh, I also noticed a favorite guilty pleasure, 'Powder' (1995), made by Victor Salva, who directed 'Jeepers Creepers', one of my favorite horror movies. But I digress; the less said about that director, the better.

I will say this for a remake it was not that bad it pretty much is still hard for me to watch it as it sends chills down my spine, hell just watching this review I felt uneasy with the clips you used, but I'll always enjoy the japanese version even if it fell down the same path of most horror movies.

My main problem with this film is how it completely loses it's element of mystery rather quickly and just descends into a bunch of creepy (though to be fair, quite a few things work) imagery cobbled together by a general story. BUT, I DO prefer this over the American The Grudge plus it has some reliable actors, mainly Naomi Watts and Brian Cox.
@deusdeaconReviews
@deusdeaconReviews 7 лет назад
leadvendor well I agree it's better then the grudge but lacking in mystery really ? I always considered it a horror mystery, of course in retrospect popular culture has eliminated the mystery I guess but that's not the films responsibility
@leadvendor
@leadvendor 7 лет назад
I think I mainly feel that way because I'm personally jaded. No fault of the movie's, mind you. I know my own bitterness when I see it. Again, I didn't hate this movie at all, when it was first released, I was impressed by how, as you said, it respected the source material.
@deusdeaconReviews
@deusdeaconReviews 7 лет назад
leadvendor right yeah I can completely understand being jaded by certain films, some can just rub you the wrong way that won't disappear

BTW, you were on the money when you complimented Cox very, very subtly shifting his character from casual and bitter to menacing. It's amazing what a slight narrowing of the eyes and straightening of the mouth can do.

quick question daecon. when you re-filmed this one, did you use the original script you had written back in the day? if yes, why?
@deusdeaconReviews
@deusdeaconReviews 8 лет назад
Yes It was the same script, Because I didn't really see a reason to rewrite any of it, my opinion hasn't changed at all, The only thing that was changed was the last bit where i mention the video was filmed out of order.
@Dragoonistiri

well when it comes to the ring video it wasn't that far off in the past that my style had changed too much honestly but for something like my city of angels review (which i will be doing a full rewrite remake of) then yeah you can tell the difference.

Anybody else think that Alama from F.E.A.R. is really Sumara but harnessed by an evil weapons manufacturing corporation for her powers? I know Alama was likely inspired by alot of this folklore but man, they almost feel like the same character but in different timelines.
@deusdeaconReviews
@deusdeaconReviews 5 лет назад
I mean obviously Alma has her own origin and story so they are separate characters. but theres absolutely no denying the fact that one character informed the creation of the other, without things like the ring and ringu before it, F.E.A.R would be a very different game, Speaking of which I may be doing the F.E.AR. games on twitch at some point if that interests you.
@justinmiller2132
@justinmiller2132 5 лет назад
@@deusdeaconReviews Yeah that would be awesome actually. I've only really played F.E.A.R. 1 but I definitely thought it was an excellent blend of action/horror. I thought it was especially effective when it threw you outta the combat outta nowhere and placed you into extremely strange situations. Part of the reason I feel like Sumara and Alama feel so alike is their psychic abilities and general design. But definitely do a video on F.E.A.R. that whole concept was impressive.
@justinmiller2132
@justinmiller2132 5 лет назад
@@deusdeaconReviews Actually I just thought of something, why would they let Sumara go home to her adopted family at all? Once they did the study and found out she has essentially psychic powers, why would she be allowed anywhere near the general public?
