Nearly 21 years after the release of the first Lord of the Rings movie directed by Peter Jackson, we are invited back to Middle Earth with Amazon Prime Video's latest offering "The Rings of Power". This epic takes place thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and follows the adventures of Galadriel and Elrond as they try to stop Sauron (yeah...we kinda know how that goes lol).

I really enjoyed this episode. The actor playing Halbrand was very good...managed to be attention getting in all his scenes without any over acting, and he did final scene really well. I've not liked some amounts of the dialogue, but his was well done throughout, and the way he played Galadriel throughout. Very fun. @greenman6141
@greenman6141 Год назад
@@tiberianexcalibur Yes, I agree. There are good American actors. And we tend to know who they are quite quickly, because good directors hire them over and over. Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Amy Adams are all excellent, and clearly aren't interested in being Starlets (for example, they don't diet themselves into skeletons). It's less obvious with male actors because there are so so many more roles for men than women, so even really capable good actors, like Oscar Isaac, can end up in silly super hero nonsense. Though I have to say, I've been enjoying watching Isaac in Moon Knight. Moon Knight is nonsense, but DAMN! his British accent is better than most British actors trying to do British accents that aren't their natural one. The one Isaac is doing is SO specific, and it is PERFECT. It isn't JUST the accent, it's the way he places certain words or sounds in a sentence, and how he inflects them and even the motions that go with them. It is down right eerie watching it. It's a performance that the show doesn't deserve.

One of Sauron’s many names is The Great Deceiver, and it is said the best lies have some truth in them, well he lived up to that title. Not once did he truly lie to any of them, and yet he manipulated them so perfectly by making all those who helped them think it was their idea. Damn Charlie Vickers was perfectly cast. As for the scenes with The Stranger and Nori, I did not think I was gonna cry this episode, but when Nori said goodbye to her family and then when Poppy ran up to her and hugged her I couldn’t help but cry. What truly is upsetting is that rather than shoot seasons 1, 2, and 3 back to back to back Amazon Studios only JUST started production on season 2 as of this video being released. And the show runners have said it will be YEARS before we see the next season. So while I’m still going to watch season 2 I’m afraid that most people will completely forget about the show by then.

30:50 Halbrands intentions, im thinking its multiple reasons. Save the world from the infecting darkness, learn from Celebrimbor to perfect his own designs, slip some form of influence in the process essentially infecting the 3 rings while allowing them to work and protect middle-earth so he can eventually bind and heal it as he sees fit with his own ring thatd return him to full power. All this after his almost born-again experience after he was killed by Adar... And yeah you're right, def try and pull galadriel to his side. If she hadnt survived with Theo, i think he could have gotten to her.

Sauron is both smarter and more talented than Celebrimbor, cuz Sauron is a Maia and he at the beginning was working under Aule. Aule is the Valar who is the god of smiths and creator of the dwarves. It is Celebrimbor who will learn from Sauron. Sauron does not want to heal shit. Nor prevent "corruption". He is just a tyrant who thinks that his vision of healing the world is the only right one and seeks to create a "perfect world order", where everything will be as he says and there will be no freedom. He sees freedom as a problem because he is a perfectionist and freedom is unpredictable and can cause chaos. There is also the fact that he was jealous that only Eru Illuvatar (God) was able to actually create. If you remember that Loki speach from the first Avengers movie. That is bacially it.

@@freebird6591 How? It is literally in the books. Sauron never ever, regretted the things he did. The only time he acted as if he was sorry was after Morgoth was defeated. Sauron took a fair looking form and acted as if he was trying to repent, because he was afraid of the wrath of the Valar. Additionally, he was "invited" back to Valinor to stand trial in front of Manwe and the rest of the Valar. When he realized that the jig was up, and that if he shows himself in Valinor, they will see through him, he went into hiding until he resurfaced in the Second age to forge the rings. Morgoth was jealous about the fact that he cannot create like Eru Illuvatar. When Eru was creating,m the rest of the Valar joined him in the music of creation making a symphony of sorts. However, Morgoth wanted to do his own thing and brought discord into the music. When Morgoth tried to create his own "stuff" he realized he can only change existing creations of Eru. That is how he started corrupting Elves and turning them into orcs, why trolls are bad copies of Ents etc. Morgoth attracted and corrupted Maia and Sauron (at that time called Mairon was one of them). It was also said that Sauron was unly surpassed by Aule in his crafting ability. Morgoth wanted to undo and destroy the world, creating a new one, while Sauron wanted to rule the existing world that would follow his rules. And both he and Saruman were into "order", that is why Isengard looked like the a giant dirty ugly factory during the industrial revolution. "The old world will burn in the fires of industry". Tolkien himself hated industrialization. That is why Mordor and Isengard have that heavy industrial, dirty, iron look to them.

32:00. No. There were 20 rings made. 1 by Sauron alone, 3 by the Celebrimbor alone, and 16 by the Elves and Sauron, disguised as an Elf named Annatar. Even though in the show they have swapped out Annatar with Halbrand I don't believe they will divide up those rings between three races. More rings will be made, maybe by the Elves or by Sauron. Another possibility is that the Dwarves find out about the Elven Rings and that's what motivates them to actually mine the mithril.Then the Dwarves either make Rings themselves, possibly with Halbrand's help, or they get the Elves to make Rings for them in exchange for mining the mithril.

Idk if you caught it but Saurbrand and the Stranger made some really nice dialogue that is repeated in the lord of the rings. When he revealed himself to Galadriel, and tried to seduce her, he told her he'll make her stronger than the foundations of the earth, more beautiful than the dawn, things Galadriel herself repeated when Frodo tempted her with the ring in the fellowship. you know from the movies, the outburst "But instead of a Dark Lord, you would have a Queen. Not Dark, but beautiful and terrible as the dawn, Stronger than the foundations of the Earth. All shall fear me and dispair." really nice touch. Then the second one you noticed. Proto-Gandalf/ Olorin, said the thing with "follow your nose thing that Gandalf said when he was with the fellowship in the future Khazad-dum/Moria. he said something else. aah, he said to the wraiths that though he was Sauron "Go back to the shadow from whence you came" which in the hobbit movies(extended edition, i believe, Galadriel vanguished Sauron from the fortress of Dol'Guldur in Mirkwood and said the exact thing, i believe the whole line was: "you have no power here, Servant of Morgoth. You are nameless... You are Faceless... You are formless... GO BACK TO THE VOID FROM WHENCE YOU CAAAAAAMEEEEEE!" not exact, but very similar. cool tie ins to the future happenings in the cinematic canon(because even if that scene might have happened with the white council in the appendicies of LOTR, it had nothing to do with the period of the Hobbit story or with Radagast and Gandalf and Saruman. Galadriel led a legion of Elves into Mirkwood during the time of the attack on Gondor, and she destroyed the whole fortress with its inhabitants to nothing but ruins. I am a film/ main books geek. Unfortunately cannot say the same for the Silmarilion and the ones edited and finished by Christopher Tolkien yet, as i haven't read them 100%, but the main events i know and so far the show is not bad. it had the issues of story and characters. they took their sweet 9 hours to build up the world and the premise and just introduce the characters that shall be relevant later( and those who were not: Harfoots, Bronwyn and Arondir,... they are done with their arcs. i believe we will see some Harfoots maybe only the next season and then it will be done.

It seems to me that Sauron as Halbrand went to the most advanced guilds of smiths of men and elves. We didn't see him as much interact with the men's smith guild except for him fighting because he stole one of the smith's indentifier pins. We only got the opportunity to see that one of the major politicians in that city was planning to spread his influence over multiple areas/ kingdoms of men directly as a result of helping Halbrand's cause. The only major society not yet seen touched by Sauron/Halbrand seems to be the dwarves. We saw the elves in a rush to save their species, so they listen to Sauron before identifying him and felt they found a way to utilize his knowledge and limit his potential to corrupt them. The men went to war quickly for fear of the lost of both their city and one of the realms of middle earth. We don't yet know the impact Sauron had on the people there when the camera wasn't on him.

Everyone having the potential for evil via their innate desire for power is a big theme in Tolkien. Sauron himself was once just a neutral spirit, even Frodo failed in the end, etc. Sauron knows he can’t take on the elves by himself, he has to corrupt them. With the budget they used a lot of it to build sets and stuff that will be used throughout the whole series, so future seasons won’t be as expensive. They also blew the budgets immensely due to COVID restrictions in NZ filming took twice as long.

Before Sauron served Morgoth he was almost like an Istari, he's of the same level and served under the god of the smiths (alongside Saruman) ... so he knows about a lot of things the elves would not know. When he learned of the elves plight, he guided them to making the rings because he saw potential to use them to rule over everyone but ultimately they made these rings seperate to the ones he forges for men and dwarves and so although they are under the same influence, he has no control or power over the elves, which always makes him angry. There is so much lore and so much story to tell and although there are pacing issues and sometimes problems with dialogue, I feel this series is doing a good job in telling us this story so far, although it's definitely being helped by knowing the second age from Tolkiens books and texts beforehand. Maybe where general audiences are losing interest is because of the lack of backstory in the writing so far. I hope going forward this gets fleshed out some more!

I liked the guy, and he turns out to be the Head Stinker. And we still haven't seen Isildir. I guess in the next season we will see the forging of the seven and the nine? As a first season, I thought this was strong. The writing, the world building, the characters and their development, the emotional journeys, the visuals, the music, the editing and transitions, it's all great. I know this gets a lot of flack because it's so expensive, but just because they have a huge budget, it doesn't guarantee success. I know it's taking creative license with some of the lore, but why not. I don't think they've done anything that takes away from Tolkien or does any of the characters an injustice. As a writer and storyteller myself, I can appreciate everything that they're doing. Curious to see what they do for Season Two.

A few facts from a huge LOTR nerd: 1. If he is Gandalf, then it would be inconsistent with the books because Gandalf, Radagast and Saruman came to middle earth in the third age (after Sauron was defeated and supposedly killed by Isildur). You can notice from the LOTR movies too when Elrond tells Gandalf "I was there when Sauron was defeated and Isildur failed to destroy the rings" as if Gandalf wasn't there. The two blue wizards came in the second age so it's possible that the stranger is one of the two blue wizards (unless they're going off book). 2. Gil-galad is one of the most bad-ass character from the middle earth universe. It's not conveyed properly in this series. When Morgoth attacked, Morgoth was winning but against all hope, Gil-galad went to the Gods themselves and convinced them to fight with them. That's how they were able to defeat Morgoth. [SPOILERS from the books and probably even the series ahead] Also, he and Elendil became best friends later and fought together against Sauron in the last alliance between Men and Elves. They had almost weakened and killed Sauron, that's how Isildur was able to win against Sauron. 3. In the books, Sauron came to elves as a fair-elf, won their trust and manipulated them to forge the rings. All the rings except the one ring, which was forged in Mordor, were forged there. But when elves found out about his betrayal, they forged 3 more rings without his knowledge.

Spoiler alert - Sauron is not Jaby - seriously, though - Lovely reaction - I like Achara's confidence, and the relaxed, delicate chemistry - it really does feel like everyone sitting and watching this together - mixed feelings about the episode - I'd been carrying something different in my mind, hoping - I'll need to adjust - I do like how Sauron's been set up as a fully rounded, very human character - this is very good for the series - I can go with this version - though if he's been spending all this time disguised, trying to build an impression and a relationship, then I don't see why he'd reveal himself now, like this - that felt forced, though the actor's own transition was nicely played - the most important factor for me w this series is the fact that it happens about 4,000 years before LOTR - about as long ago as the Pyramids are from us today - I really wanted to feel that distance, to enlarge our sense of Tolkien's cosmos - that's one reason I loved the first episode - it was so boldly different, so heightened, yet familiar - the more different, the more I believed the huge time gap - now, looking back, I see many choices I didn't agree with - mostly the impulse to rush through the "origin" beats and shoehorn in so many expected developments into the brief timespan covered (like we saw in Solo) : - Elrond finds Mithril, Mount Doom erupts, creating Mordor, the 3 Rings are crafted (in just a brief montage), Numenor already sees its fate, Gandalf arrives (and is mistaken for Sauron?) - and too many beats mirroring LOTR; I didn't believe this was an ancient version of Middle Earth - it needed to take its time, focusing more on other aspects, instead of letting itself be pulled towards what we know, and I had a totally different idea of how Sauron would emerge - but this was the criticism I had of the show's detractors - letting themselves be blinded by their preconceptions, not allowing themselves to open up and watch the show on its own terms - I need to adjust and try to look again - overall, though, it is very enjoyable

Sauron's transition is because the closer he gets to his goal, the more blind he becomes. Just like he got focused on killing Aragorn instead of having his soldiers guard Mount Doom.
