@@damienjstepick yeah I know they are, as you say this is unfortunate! My comment was using a meme from the Pitch Meeting channel here on youtube if you don't know it....some priceless sketches just dismantling the bs Hollywood puts out. Recently started just watching Pitch Meeting vids instead of actually seeing the worst flicks (a la Morbius). Saves time and they're effing hilarious :D
Not that I am at all a fan of the vast majority of what Hollywood puts out these days, but the role of the dark lord in this scenario is perfectly filled by Jeff Bezos. Being evil he, as all the shiny money has become so precious to him, was of course going to corrupt the great works of JRR (for the promise of massive profits), remember he hired the show runners who seem to know very little about the world Tolkein created and set this avalance of dumpster fires in motion.
What's disturbed me the most is that of the few cast interviews I've watched, none talk about things like "it's a tremendous story, etc....". It's all been about "diversity, accessibility, strong female character...." It's supposed to be about a great story, not your need for social justice affirmation.
@@matthew6732 Yes, how dare us for wanting the most expensive tv show in history to actually have a good story. We should all be flogged for having such an absurd opinion. What was I thinking, it's all supposed to be about the actors feelings and affirmations. Silly me.
@@matthew6732 ahhh yeah our complaints are clearly misplaced.... The last jedi anyone? Remember how that was such a massive success despite trying to say "fuck the fans, fuck the lore, we gotta be diverse even at the cost of the story" ....yeah....me neither....
@@danielhogan6255 what's wrong with diversifying the cast a bit? it doesn't seem to interfere with the story much. maybe I'm wrong, but adding a more diverse set of characters isn't a bad thing or anything
It began with the forging of the great rings. Three were given to the elves -- immortal, wisest, and of all beings, the most immune to Progressive vandalism. Seven were given to the dwarf-lords, whose beardless women were known as the most narcissistic and whingiest in all of Middle Earth. And nine rings were gifted to the race of men, who -- above all else -- desired to be women. But. . . _What IS a woman?_
@@cashewnuttel9054 It's a bit like buying the Mona Lisa, scribbling over 99.9999% of it with paint crayons, shredding that entire section, then inviting admirers to take a look at what's left of it now. After getting them to pay the entrance fee. . Or like asking you to rent that really nice Ferrari they'd just bought, only to find they'd personally crashed it into a few walls already. For fun. In effect, they spent a billion dollars on something only to dump most of it in a trash can. Yeah, technically they can do what they want with the Rings of Power series. . The real problem is when they try to insist that you should buy it .. .. RESPECT THE LORE
Mate, you just dont get it. They are attempting to greate clean energy. They have already found Tolkien, wrapped him in copper wire and are in position. As soon as he starts spinning in his grave at incredible speeds, our energy crisis will be solved. Worth it. Well, all the dancing and spitting on his grave was kind of unnecessary though, to be honest.
"Breaking News: Multi billionare company Amazon invents a new form of substainable energy which focuses on the mechanic energy provoked by the fast spinning of famous dead author J.R.R Tolkien in his grave"
I like the part when Samwise returned to the Shire without Frodo. When his wife, Rose, asked him where Frodo was, Sam burst into song. 🎶We Don't Talk About Frodo🎶 is a bop!
Honestly I can't really figure out why the show was made. They've hired barely credited directors to create the thing. They've lent heavily into modernizing Tolkien with the old 'diversity and inclusion' mantra. Hired a bunch of social activists to play the various characters. Fired the Tolkien scholar who raised concerns that the production might not be going in the wrong direction. Compressed the timeline of Middle Earth to fit in with the demands of the writers. Thrown Hobbits into the second age because 'reasons'. Given no concrete information about the plot of the show apart from 'somehow Sauron returned' and have finally spent the last few weeks before the show comes out calling the fans racist. Seriously they would have been better just piling up a billion dollars and burning it.
And then they'll blame us for not supporting it, after they spat in our faces and more or less told us to GTFO, when this dumpster fire inevitably fails.
It was said by Gimli that there are few dwarf-women, probably no more than a third of the whole people. They seldom walk abroad except at great need. They are in voice and appearance, and in garb if they must go on a journey, so like to the dwarf-men that the eyes and ears of other peoples cannot tell them apart. The Return of the King, 360 (App A)]
@BadVideo Man Um, That's cute but it;s WRONG! War of the Jewels, "Part Two. The Later Quenta Silmarillion: Concerning the Dwarves (Chapter 13)"; a similar statement was made in The_Making_of_Appendix_A#Durin's_Folk "Indeed this strangeness they have that no Man nor Elf has ever seen a beardless Dwarf - unless he were shaven in mockery, and would then be more like to die of shame than of many other hurts that to us would seem more deadly. For the Naugrim have beards from the beginning of their lives, male and female alike; nor indeed can their womenkind be discerned by those of other race, be it in feature or in gait or in voice, nor in any wise save this: that they go not to war, and seldom save at direst need issue from their deep bowers and halls." They were only Dwarf colored, males outnumbered females 3 to 1 and the females are not discribed in detail enough to tell how smart they were. Only the males were invloved in the histories. I can't imagine where you got the rest of that garbage since this is ALL that was written by Tolkien on the subject, but you are spouting woke nonsense.
As a woman who's been into (among other things) action/adventure aimed at boys/men literally since I learned to read, I couldn't care less about how many women are or aren't in stories about men going to war or on an epic journey. That's like complaining about the lack of men in books about nuns or girls' boarding schools. Oh wait, no one complains about not enough dudes in literature about sisterhood, it's only literature about brotherhood that's 'problematic'. Btw I also love the logic (lol) of simultaneously complaining about toxic masculinity AND the lack of women in stories which are clearly about male bonding and the expectations placed on men by society (e.g. going to war).
Don't forget these idiots think the only way to portray a "strong whamyn" is to...give her toxic masculinity? If a male character spoke to a female character the way Galadriel speaks to Elrond in the trailer, that character would be immediately destroyed by the woke-bots.
I like the part of the series preview best, where the nonbinary giant sells the idea of an inclusive monorail to the city of Grey Havens with dance and singing... The "Wokerail", it sure put Forlond on the map!
"You have not seen what I have seen" says Galadriel, who never was in a war, to Elrond, who fought in the War of Wrath and the War of the Last Alliance. Oh yeah, sure Galadriel, Elrond has never seen stuff you have seen, sure!
@@saar144 No, not yet. But he still has seen things she has never seen. He's been in wars, she never was. Tolkien fans aren't like any other fans, they have deep respect and love to Tolkien's beloved works. You cannot compare them to kids who love watching DC or Marvel. Amazon really pokes the hornet's nest here and this is the price that sadly they have to pay. Just to end with this quote from one of Tolkien's letters: "I do earnestly hope that in the assignment of actual speeches to the characters they will be represented as I have presented them: in style and sentiment. I should resent perversion of the characters." - J.R.R. Tolkien
I read LOTR when I was 16, I think peter Jackson got, it , it looked so much like my imagination of the characters, this one looks like Beauty and the Beast meets my little pony
This is the Lord of the Rings, equivalent of season 7 and 8 of Game of Thrones. Physically painful sacrifice of plot lines, character development and story-telling. The worst part, is you can never take what you've seen back.
I keep remembering this one comment that said the galadriel actress was basically having tantrums on Twitter "If you don't like it don't watch it btch" like oh girl, this is definitely the end of the line for you
Not only did they fire Tom Shippey (for obliquely breaking his NDA on an obscure vlog), they replaced him with someone who holds a gender studies degree. That's really the only thing you need to know about this show. I would very much like to ask anyone still involved with this impending trainwreck what kind, numbers, and colors of animals Queen Beruthiel kept and their purpose to her. I can't imagine the sheer wrongness of answers I would get, if any dared answer at all.
@@formerfreak4943 Season 1 drops in 2 weeks. Season 2 is in currently production. Season 3 will probably happen. After that, I think Amazon will pull the plug.
In all her interviews, she kept saying "it's more accessible now", how was the Novels, trilogy not accessible in the first place? For those who don't know how to access the originals, it's easy, just do a search for the movies, stream and watch. How is that not easily accessible? When the movies came out, all you had to do was go to the theater, buy a ticket and sit and watch then repeat.
You know, the books where SO innacesible that barely anyone heard of them before the movies; which ALSO were so innacesible that hardly anybody watched them.
I watched prince of bel air and never wanted a white dude innit. I watch sex in the city and never wanted a dude playing a woman. I just want to watch a good story, i dont care if the actor protests against the current political situation or fight against the shaming of fat people. They find problems that never were.
I am a 'person of colour' and I couldn't possibly hate this noxious, narcissistic, self-absorbed trainwreck of an 'interpretation' more. It looks to be beyond 'awful'. You're right... I'll tune in for the 'memes', but after that I will head into therapy. Because I simply will not be able to process the horror of a mega/meta billionaire murdering a beautiful culture right before our eyes. Thanks for the commentary.
Honestly, the “reverse marketing” point was so “on point”! They had MILLIONS of people *in the bag* by producing a Tolkien series and deliberately threw that bag into the dirt for not being being made in the image of the woke hollywood bubble. I just can’t with these movies and series anymore.
I actually appreciate creators like you helping to keep the mood light and in perspective. I’d be left in despair as my entire childhood is ravaged in front of my eyes otherwise.
“We’re trying to write the story Tolkien never wrote” Tolkien made a whole world with history and it’s own languages he had more creativity in one nut than these two idiots that look like twins that were always getting lectured by their parents when they got caught making out in their room put together! You can make a tv show about dwarfs elf’s and men without slapping LOTR on it just to get old fan to watch it! I’m I’m black and Mexican and I don’t wanna see Tyrone the elf or Juan the hobbit
They actually said _"we had to write the novel Tolkien never wrote and turn it into a mega-event TV series"_ which is even worse than if they said they were trying to. They outright stated it like they've achieved some amazing feat! It's an overt proclamation that this is nothing more than fanfic, but some people keep insisting they'll be faithful to the source material!
Yeah, basically these people only care if the oroginal material is popular enough. Then they take it and completely rewrite it, thinking they are better than the original author and then they act surprised that people hate it..that's when they pull out "you are racist homophobe" card...
@@Youpoorsouls I don't like saying mean stuff about people's appearance but they look like generic cardboard cutouts? I believe that 1 billion actually includes the cost of the first season. Still going to be a sh*tshow. Lets see: print books, ebooks, audiobooks, movies. Seems pretty dang accessible to me without Amazon or Nomvete.
When Nomvete talks about the accessibility of Tolkien’s stories, she shows that she is woefully ignorant of the popularity of Tolkien. His LOTR books are the most published books on the planet - second to the Bible - and already translated into dozens of languages. The Peter Jackson films made the work of tolkien even more popular! Now while a lot of the detail characters and events of the second age are in Tolkien’s other books: The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales, still…the condensed outline/timeline of the second age events WERE ALWAYS PRINTED in the appendices of the LOTR books - since their first publication 70yrs ago!! Maybe one can argue that few book readers ever read the appendix, but who really knows that. The point I’m making is that the outline of the second age stories has been around for decades! While not depicted on film, the stories still have been accessible to millions worldwide
Its still weird that people are going to watch it, even for the memes. You understand engagement is a metric they will ALWAYS spin to their advantage. But you do you homie.
Hobbits lived with Hobbits, wood elves with wood elves, dwarves with dwarves, men with men and orcs with orcs ,segregation is build into the Tolkien story. It’s the few stories of when there is intermingling that make them precious, if they are all ready multicultural it takes away from the power of their interaction and all the individual cultures as well.
Great point you make and i paraphrase, "The niche that they have carved out for their target audience is fans of fantasy that are not Tolkien fans. It's a great reverse advertising campaign."
Guys, no matter how deep the temptation. Don't cringe watch, don't hate watch. Do not give them a minute of your viewing time as it will count as a view and lend them credence. Let this one season burn like the dumpster fire it is.
Amazon: "There were no Hobbits back then, so we bring Harfoots". Definition of Harfoot: "Hobbit subspecies". Saying Harfoots are not Hobbit is like saying, I don't know, that Native Americans are not Humans, or that White are not Humans. We all are different ethnic groups, but we still are Humans. Harfoots are just another ethnic group of the Hobbits!
People complaining that its a disgrace that harfoots are basically hobbits and they shoudnt exist in this moment in time… common… although a lot of species in tolkiens work are placed in time fully developed from the get go it doesnt mean that its a stupid idea to have hobbits exist before they started existing as such, all mithology is inspired in the real world and as such its normal that species evolve. I dont mind critiques but jeez, people should really just wait for the season to finish or at least start before blasting upon everything, sure this videos attract views, and if this youtube creators are right then jeff bezos is still having enormous publicity and Im sure the money invested will come back multiplied a few times. I dont see anyone that says anything bad about the show not commiting to a month on Prime.
Galadriel - "You have not seen what I have seen." Roy Batty - "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe,” Roy says. “Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.." Galadriel - "You have not seen what I have seen."
It began with the forging of the great films. Threads were given by Tolkien, immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Rights were granted to Jackson, great miner and craftsman of the mountain of lore. And nine, nine hours were gifted to the race of men, who above all else, desire quality. But they were all of them deceived, for another show was made. In the land of Amazon, in the fires of Mount Prime, the Dark Lord Bezos forged in secret a master flop. And into this show he poured his money, his greed and his will to dominate all film. One show to ruin them all.
I still don't understand how the producers or the people whose money is being used for the show seem to disappear while the boat is sinking, if it was my money I'll be breathing in the back of the neck of the writers just to make sure they make something decent.
Same how on earth do they have so little passion or life or principles. They may have money but are they even alive? I think they're more like walking corpses
Well, it is common for wealthy people to sink large sums of money into movies as a tax write off. That's how a lot of those shitty martial arts movies that people only watch because they shoehorned a steamy sex scene into get made. The producer spends the bare minimum on the production and pockets the rest. We get a crappy movie that no one cares about, and the billionaire gets tax credit. This is likely something similar.
When you advertise that your making a show based in Middle Earth and you do everything in your ability to change it from Middle Earth, dont be surprised that people point out what you did and their unhappiness with what you made.
The first 5 seconds of this video perfectly sums it up, couldn’t have put it any better. Disney took Star Wars, a movie about rebels vs the empire, but that made no sense because Disney IS the empire. Amazon got LOTR a story about rebels vs the empire, but it makes no sense because Amazon IS the empire.
You nailed it at the 9:11 (hah) mark. "I'll tell you what, the reverse marketing campaign they managed to pull off... these guys managed to drive away... anyone remotely interested in Tolkein". Facts. By the way, completely agree about having some sympathy for the people trying to follow in WETAs footsteps. Their hearts were probably in the right place. You know what doesn't get discussed enough about this show... Why Will Poulter and Tom Budge left the show. I suspect at least one of them left because they realized what a crapfest this was.
I remember wishing I’d get to see a live action of some events told in the silmarillion someday… careful what you wish for I guess. This is going to be really BAD
Fear not Amazon don't have the rights to the silmarillion They are basing this entire series off of the few lines in the lord of the rings. The Tolkien estate refused to let them ruin the silmarillion
Imagine a super production of the silmarilion, 6 movies starting from the creation of the silmarils until the war of wrath. A LOT of practical effects, 10 years of pre-production, infinite money, best actors and tech available….Maybe in the far future, maybe
Tolkien never said that the Balrog didn't do anything great during the 2nd age so I hope they make him a crew member as we Sail the seas seeking the One Piece. Since Tolkien never stated that Middle Earth isn't on the same world One Piece takes place!
Having an inexperienced group of writers being allowed in the same hemisphere as a Lord of the Rings IP...the horror. It reminds me so much of Rian Johnson being in charge of The Last Jedi, when he didn't have enough experience to write and direct 2 bums screaming at each other in Central Park. I already don't support projects where employees can get down in the weeds and get petty with their customers, without punishment. But this is enough for me to not even feel anxiety over that decision.
@@Whitby_Abbeys_Ghost I don't blame the individual for their lack of experience (Rian Johnson), I blame the person that puts the inexperienced in charge of something this important (Kathleen Kennedy). And to your point, I feel that qualifies as a sign of disrespect. The fact that they couldn't be bothered to hire someone that knows that they should be faithful and respectful to the source material...someone that sticks to the established world building. You don't have to drive out an established fanbase to draw in a new one. Rian caught so much ire because he couldn't keep his mouth shut, and showed so much disrespect all on his own.
@@Whitby_Abbeys_Ghost It really depends. Using the Rian Johnson example I would say it depends on how the inexperienced person reacts to being called such. In Johnsons case he spitefully destroyed an entire IP in reaction. I would say that's pretty disrespectful.
I got reimagined words for some of the terms Amazon has been throwing around: Bigot bomb, Racist storm, misogynistic rot, critical troll slash. Also, they will release the first two episodes in a two hour premiere on September 1st. Guess they got it that releasing on the day the author died would be bad PR.
10:26 - my thoughts exactly. I hate how those arrogant people tarnished good ideas, labeling everyone who doesn't agree with them as bigots while doing so
Why do people hate this series? I mean I actually love the part where Elendil made love with a half-orc half-troll dude and gave birth to a dwarf-hobbit. Ugh, such a diverse world they have created and surely would make Tolkien tearful. And people say the lines are cringe? I think not! I absolutely loved it when Celebrimbor said "It's Forgin time"
You can always tell when a show or movie is gonna be absolute shite when the cast doesn't even talk about the show or cast and crew or the writers. Just look at Brie Larson and Captain Marvel and then Avengers: Last Hooray. She talked about how her character was the strongest and best. How she did her own stunts (risking the film being delayed while her dumbass was recovering) and basically how she's the "bestest ever!" Not tons of fudge is doing the same thing but "I got here first! I am the best dwarf ever!" No thanks, I'll do with Rings of Regret what I did with Apples Foundation. Just won't watch.
When I heard how much amazon paid for this, I was sure it was going to be amazing, they will respect what came before and especially Tolkien but after everything I'm worried (and I'm not the biggest fan ever, I just read silmarilion, Lord of the rings, the hobbit, and unfinished tales) But now I'm just heartbroken. I was ready for accepting how they tried to adapt it, it's not something easy to do, but now I'm just sad about it
After i saw the member of Numenor Liberation Army ask Al Pharazon what did Sauron bring to the Island Nation and he said "sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health". I knew this series will be a cult classic.
Second fastest I ever clicked the sub button. Arguments are well reasoned, funnily presented and eloquently delivered. Seriously good for a new channel.
everytime i see a franchise destroyed i think of the episode of south park where the boys are watching indiana jones being raped by george lucas and steven spielburg. its the same thing essentially. galadriel was such a cool character in the og trilogy and they degraded and depowered her into another generic male character, after seeing this show ive been more interested into her lore and how she was actually written.
I don't know if its been mentioned yet, but Amazon doesn't actually have the rights for the LOTR and Hobbit books. The only rights they do have, is for the Appendixes of the ROTK

Releasing the show on the anniversary of Tolkien's death will answer the question if it's possible to die again from either rage at destroying his life's work or embarrassment.
Call me old fashioned, but I will watch it first... I can remember the negative views people had towards shows like DS9 - which were utterly nonsense. Heck, there were even fans that said that the LotR from Peter Jackson wouldn't work - yet here we are using it as positive example.
thats your decision and i support it, but i ask that you keep a fair council, and remember no amount of vfx can make up for bad storytelling...to be honest if its good, its good...it just doesnt look good from here right now is all. Thats my take on it all.
What a masterpiece, amazing writing "You bring the crowns and heads of conquered kings to my city steps. You insult my queen. You threaten my people with slavery and death! Oh, I've chosen my words carefully, Orc. Perhaps you should have done the same! Orc : This is blasphemy! This is madness! Galadriel : Madness...? Galadriel : This is Sparta!" Chills down my spine !
It is "So Time" to be necessary and revolutionary and see yourself in us staring right back at you moving forward and being seen and heard and being a poster child. It's perfectly easy to grasp people!
For a lore I love, I never thought I'd hope so hard it fails to the point of destroying the careers of everyone involved. Only thing I'd say, is the actors with the decency not to attack fans, I wish no ill will. Everyone else? F*** em
Duuude you're hilarious, love the skits! Also, you're right bout the actors in the interviews: watching the casts in LotR gave their interviews is such a pleasure to hear comparing to these lots...
When Galadriel says to Frodo is that a Sapphire. on that Ring 💍? And Frodo says No its a hemorrhoid ….. Brought tears to my eyes 👀…Especially when taking a Dump..
A few facts. Female dwarves have been on film before. Dark elves have been on film before, Amazon have made plenty of woke shite before , so this series can't even claim this as a first.😂 Oh and Galadriel is not xena warrior princess, she actually never wore amour or went physically to war after leaving numenor, being described as a " penitent". Getting the boot was the best thing that happened to Tom Shippey, he can now hold onto his full dignity.
I loved it when Galadriel looked at her crew before the big battle and said "and should we win the day, the fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but a day when the world declared in one voice, we will not go quietly into the night, we will not vanish without a fight, we're going to live on, we're going to survive .. TODAY WE CELEBRATE OUR INDEPENDENCE DAY!" I literally jumped up and clapped.
I’ve learned my lesson from having high hopes for Netflix’s live adaptation of Cowboy Bebop….if they’re not going to be faithful to the source material, then they’ve already set themselves up for failure.
As a noob Tolkien fan with some knowledge in the books and 6 movies I couldn’t sit for ten minutes even though I’ve only read the hobbit and half of the first book, I thought drowning in a abyss forever is a more suitable option
Also everyone needs to watch the first episode by any other means , don't give Amazon the numbers because even if you're watching the train wreck your still giving Amazon your viewership and they will use that to sell that . Sadly the first episode will be massive because people are gonna watch it whether they hate it or not
I hope your channel sees much success, doesn't matter if you're talking about things we already know and have seen, I laughed my ass off 👌😎 i subscribed my dude, oh and I can't wait till we see Taika Waititi's screaming goats leading Sauron to Castle Greyskull 🤣
I think the glaring issue is that amazon got the rights to the trilogy and nothing more. So deciding to write about the second age is insanity, as they can't legally use any of the source material for the era. Amazon also has a diversity policy, which ofc is a good thing but here its just dont so wrong.
nothing wrong with diversity.. We just wanted a good story, you know?🤷 shame they want diversity AT THE EXPENSE of a good story..thats what really messes this up.
When the show comes out a lot of people are going to watch it just out of curiosity so what to do is not watch it and wait for youtuber's we trust to give us an idea about what this serie is really about like this they well not win
I've probably watched more hours of vids taking the piss out of The Rings of Woke than there are hours in the series itself (which I will never watch). I'm kind of surprised that the first "Female Dwarf of Colour!!!" didn't manage to squeeze in a few vomits of body positivity in there for good measure.
As a DARK TOWER fan, it is so frustrating that Amazon decided to can the planned TV series and even not allowing people to watch the pilot in order to do this and WHEEL OF TIME.... But somehow, I kinda feel relieved.
