Sadly according to woke Amazon's not so brightest writers, a woman can't be strong unless she demands to speak to the manager,, uhm sorry i mean king, granted Karen-driel has no business and a right to speak to in the first place. Demands numenorian army that is famed to be the best foot soldiers, convinces them to become Rohiram so they can rip off Peter Jackson because apparently that's where most of their inspiration comes from, thousands of soldiers and their horses fit in three ships to save twenty random villagers at the dawn on the fifth day, villagers end up dead anyway. Then Karen-driel survives a volcanic ash and scorching dust cloud, she impresses us with her sword-man-ship while teaching the best foot soldiers of Numenor in middle earth that there are many ways to kill an orc but to sum it up shortly, stabbing and twisting a sword in hopes that the thing will die from laughing. Then He-man-driel ditches her husband and makes Hal-ron her romance interest instead of avenging her brother like she was supposed to according to their narrative but fu+k that. What's not to love about this show honestly? It inspired me and made me wish i was a woman too being a marry sue in disguise. Such brilliant ideas that iam inspired to see another TV show made by the same writers where they make Virgin Marry replace Leonidas and becomes the leader of the 300 spartan, the possibilities are limitless really once you are accustomed to "diversity" and "representation". And if anyone even dares to criticize this, they are hateful, racists, feminist and every other negative term that ends with "ist", you shouldn't criticize the product but be thankful, praise and keep consuming.
She told the beast she was leaving with the wizard, and she's destroy him if he tried to stop her, he took one step and became dust on the wind with a wave of her hand, she was far far more powerful and intimidating and at the the same time beautiful and beguiling. If she wasn't the greatest elf of all time she was the second and she was without question the greatest after the first age
Galadriel didn't have much screen time in Peter Jackson's original triolgy, but let's take a look at some of the things she did, without using violence, and while being married; Her voice is the first one we hear in Fellowship, she tells us the basics of the story leading up to the current events. She offered a safe space for the fellowship to rest after their ordeal with losing Gandalf. She makes Boromir, a powerful warrior, deeply emotional from what she told him in his head. She made Gimli, who disliked elves, care about her. She showed Frodo what would happen if he failed, basically giving him more motivation to succeed. She also gave him advice. She gave everyone gifts, things that actually ended up saving their lives, and thus indirectly saving the mission. When Helm's Deep was about to be attacked, Galadriel and Elrond sent reinforcements which basically helped the people endure until Gandalf brought more reinforcements. When Frodo was about to give up, Galadriel showed up in a vision, pulling him back up, and he heard her words that if he couldn't find a way, no one would. Maybe I missed some stuff. But overall, if you think about it, in some ways, she indirectly ensured the success of the mission. Without her help and support, maybe the mission would have failed. Of course we don't know if the fewllowship had found other ways, or made different decisions without her help; but looking back on it, what would Frodo and Sam have done without their special cloak when Sam got stuck in the ground and they hid under the cloak? What would they have done against Shelob without the Star of Eärendi? Etc. You get my point. Galadriel was very important in the story, and she did many great things, while still being feminine.
Even in the Hobbit trilogy she clearly is shown to outrank Elrond, Gandalf and Saruman, she heals Gandalf (in a kinda weird way) and then immediately banishes Sauron AND ALL NINE NAZGUL AT THE SAME TIME. She's absurdly powerful, both magically and politically, and Amazon reduced her down to an idiot with a sword.
Cate Blanchett’s Galadriel had 11 minutes on screen yet she still managed to be one of the most memorable. She was the quintessential Tolkien character. Mysterious, powerful in ways we wouldn’t expect and her beauty exudes majesty and strength. This new Galadriel needs to fight at least 8 balrogs to emerge as Galadriel the white.
And her powers are 180° of the Amazons character of the same name. Beyond being one of the most powerful magicians; Iike empathy, insight, kindness, etc.
All of the yes! Exactly my thoughts. All the "empowerment of women" done in Hollywood these days just annoys me. It's pandering and ultimately dismissive and degrading. The message being told to me is that I do not have value as a woman unless I'm functionally a cliché dude and/or a Mary Sue.
a Mary Sue as the main character is not necessarily a bad thing. but the MC can be written compellingly. the japanese isekai genre is populated by such over powered MC's but some were written well. that is not to say most of these are faceless and without traits but some are standouts. Tanya the Evil and Overlord are just some that are Mary Sue but had either deep character flaws or had engaging hooks
I feel sorry for her, she’s getting the Daisy Ridley treatment “She’s just enough acting experience, is cheap and inexperienced enough not to realize this writing/directing is a career killer role”.
@@ivicamajmunskikreten9714 We can’t blame her for the Showrunners who are patently evil conmen who think we are stupid and vapid. We as the audience need to lay the blame where it deserves or we are no better than them.
@@MrSeriousGuy I'm not blaming her, I'm just saying that she's losing nothing. she's a shit actor and she's probably gaining positive reputation with the state of things.
I guess the writers are aiming for Galadriel to have some redemptive arc over the full extent of the series. The problem is that the character has already lived for centuries, yet she behaves like an impulsive and petulant teenager or drama queen.
I see your point, but you can't have an arc that spans multiple seasons, people just forget where the character came from. Take Mr. Robot as an example, Elliot has brilliant arcs across all 4 seasons, but you don't really think too much about where he started in S1 vs. where he finished in S4, the journey and arcs within the seasons are the driving force. Rings of Power had a fantastic opportunity to redeem a bit of Galadriels character after she discovered Halbrand was Sauron, she could have admitted her greed and vengefulness drove her to make mistakes and lead Sauron into their city, but what does she do? She decides to tell NO ONE and continues being who she's been from minute one of the season.
@@Andrewiththeaudi "you can't have an arc that spans multiple seasons, people just forget where the character came from. " That's not true. Ricky LaFleur from Trailer Park Boys took 7 seasons to finally get his Grade 11.
I bet the writers weren’t doing that at all. You can see the complete disconnect with the scene with diverse elf and bad under age actor gasping, at what supposedly the audience needs to reflect with:”wow! Galadriel, commander of the northern armies!” 🤢
One of the things Peter Jackson did well is that the Elves actually look and feel like Elves. There's a sort of timeless mystery and quality to them. Whereas in Rings of Power the Elves look and feel like they're just humans with longer ears who happen to live longer. Oh and they took your jobs.
I mean, the Peter Jackson casting of Galadriel was so perfect - given that she also played Queen Elizabeth I - that casting TV Galadriel was always going to be an uphill battle. Would it have been better to cast someone who wasn’t as close a resemblance, but who had the acting chops, the ethereal nature, and the presence? And then you can slap a wig and ears on her, but you stay away from visible makeup. It’s kind of astonishing that the show runners thought visible eyeshadow and obvious haircuts were fine for elves.
@@Mrspuma527 - Hugo Weaving had his hair slicked down and pulled back so that from most angles, he might as well have had it painted on. It looks that way in most of the promo shots, which is all the Abomination Team has ever seen of elves. I bet a creative designer and hairstylist could do something amazing with elvish dreads.
Not Galadriel, she's anti-Galadriel. I think the core of the problems is that the show runners have no understanding of what good or evil actually are. This comes out in the real life attacks on the fans & the inability to write her as a hero, which I guess they were aiming for, instead writing a monster.
It's because the writers are trying to ride this gen z "good and evil are the same thing" bs when even dualism belief systems explain they are polar opposites, and they don't look at the extremes like pedophiles.
Well then stop ingesting it. The people are ultimately responsible; that is their source of money and power. if people had individual principles, this wouldn't happen
@@pyropulseIXXI I don't, believe me. Haven't in years. I've just been watching the reviews of this show cuz they're hilarious. I do miss the days when I used to get excited for new movies and shows though
@@AS-fu1kd Spot on man. I've been surprised the amount of people who just don't realize how monotonous movies have become. Good movies will make you feel invested and excited for, sad, scared, happy for the characters. Now most movies people just watch one and say it "was good", but they end up feeling nothing for it. Its forgotten as quickly as it was consumed. Good stories have you thinking about the characters and universe long after you stopped watching.
No only was Mary Sue Galadriel an unlikable character, in story she was a failure too - she got herself thrown in jail, didn't stop the creation of Mordor, lost her prisoner Adar, and after months of being around him she didn't know Sauron was right next to her. She might have a tempest her, but there's definitely a dumbass insider her too. Girl power!!
I watched Rings Of Power up to the moment when someone says something like "the stone sinks because it only looks down". Yes, that was within the first 5 mn or so. When the dialogue is written that way, no acting, directing or budget can save anything.
The same actress is in episode 3 of His Dark Material. She has a small part as a evil matron type. She has the same frozen face but it actually works in that scene. For ROP tho I don't think I've ever seen casting so bad for such a vital character
I'm really glad youtube has been recommending a lot of these smaller channels to me recently. This video was a joy to watch. Your presentation is both insightful and entertaining and the editing is spot on as well. Looking forward to seeing more of this!
Yeah man I couldn't have summarized it better. Can't believe they still seem to think that a second season is a good idea. At this point it's a show to parade around like a circus because that's what it is. Ooh Aah look we brought back Galadriel! Watch as she stares emptily at everything. Marvel at the sight of her strong, warrior woman feats of painful irony, and sickening acts of sacrilege against the actual writings of Professor Tolkien! Come one, come all, and witness a 1.5 billion dollar shit show! Lol, I jest. The only good part of this show is watching your videos on it. Another great one as always man!
If she moves around at all without the exact perfect camera angle you'll notice how tiny she is too. It's ridiculous, Galadriel is supposed to be as tall as most any male elf at 6'4".
It's her pose or beautiful face and she knows it and actual acting is going to take that pose face away she's great for a head shot but that is the core problem. she's trying to maintain that face while speaking...case in point is that horse scene
I know and it amazes me she was cast for the role. Unless of course that is what they wanted her to do - in which case she was awesome. I know it sounds crazy, but it seems like the only explanation.
Pride, Prejudice & Zombies is a cinematic masterpiece in comparison to Rings of Power. PP&Z actually has a coherent plot, dialogue that sounds like humans speaking IRL, and convincing practical effects and CGI.
Spot on assessment, took the worlds right out of the fans mouths. Morfyyd Clark has also always screamed ‘self insert’ to me, but maybe that’s just me being paranoid and still remembering Star Wars.
I have tried asking people on reddit why they like Galadriel and the answers are pretty much that all the things I felt were her flaws were perceived by them as strengths. So there are atleast some audience the showrunners have managed to hit the chord with.
Yeah and I just don't get that. I think there are a lot of people defending this show merely because they do not like the "politics" of the people who the media has put in to one basket. Just a theory of mine.
Yeah, Galadriel in the Rings of Power acts like narcissistic sociopath but unfortunately there is also a certain segment of the population for whom behaviour like that satisfies their power fantasy.
I remember how in the first LOTR movie when the characters talk about Galadriel before seeing her, it's almost in hushed whispers and it's only about the rumours they've heard. Then when she finally makes an appearance, it's instant reverence and awe striking. Galadriel didn't have many lines or much screen time, but I got a powerful and mysterious vibe about her, and I wanted to know more about this ancient being with cosmic level knowledge... now after seeing ROP, I wish I knew less. Definitely going to bury my head in Tolkien lore from now on, rather than watch the rest of this show. Yes, it'll take longer, but I'll get a butt ton more out of it than I did from this show.
Honestly the thing that bothered me most about the makeup is the obvious and ever present blush. It’s hard for me to take someone serious as a warrior when they look like they put cosmetics on before their armor.
Been watching your ROP videos; brilliant. Your insight, knowledge and delivery are fantastic, but I think my favourite thing now is hearing you pronounce Morfydd's name. I briefly studied Welsh a long time ago and have been wondering how exactly her name was pronounced. Now I know and hearing you say it is so freaking cool!
What is absolutely hilarious, is that Galadriel perfectly demonstrates behavior that would be called "Toxic Masculinity" were she a man. But apparently, being violent, arrogant, condescending, and constantly angry is heroic if it's a woman.
For me it was her inability to move her lower jaw that I found off putting - I could just not get past it. Plus the weird facial twitches. That falls on the director who obviously does not know the word "cut" or concept of a retake. It's hard to really tell if she is a decent actor or not in the end. You are soooo right - if they had at least kept her persona similar to how she was in LOTR, it would have resonated so much better with the fans and given the show a much better chance of being a success. You're summary was spot on. You may have said it better than any other reviewer on YT. Well at least the ones I have seen which is A LOT. Very, very well done sir. What....no cookie recipe....fricking tease.
It doesn’t help at all that they had Blanchett doing this character before. Obviously she’s an incredible actress, I’ll say one of the best of her generation, but it’s not just that. Her face and voice really do come across as otherworldly. You don’t really feel like you’re looking at a normal human being when she’s on screen, and she looks like she’s from another time altogether. So getting a plain Jane playing this character now is a massive contrast. She looks like a tiny college girl trying to act tough.
Tolkien knew not to tell the story through the elves perspective they arent supposed to be relatable which is why we experienced things through the hobbits or humans more it makes sense but the writers cared more about making a girl boss show than making something people would actually like
I sort of thought they were trying to match the stoic face of Aragorn, even including scenes where she helps with sword skills. Wait, instead of compassion like Aragorn in Helms Deep, it was arrogant smarminess...
I watched Pride Prejuidice and Zombies recently. I have no recollection of her playing in it. I do however, remember Matt Smith being amazing, as Matt smith do.
Hello there Jonny Law. What you said around 11' is absolute truth! Why not make a new Forgotten Realms or Warhammer story? There are a lot of new writers who have these characters and stories and don't see their work made whole on screen! Keep up the good work and hugz from Belgium.
My favorite part was when Galadriel fell from the rafters of Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri, United States. The equipment that was lowering her to the ring malfunctioned and she fell to her death in front of a live audience and live on Pay Per View during WWF's Over the Edge event
This is why I like you so much, Johnny; dare I say, the most out of all the channels that have discussed RoP, among other series and films. You don’t have any political motivation to neg on the show. Your criticisms are fair. Like I keep telling people who want to write me off as a right-wing racist (absurd, the exact opposite, and insulting on several levels), you and I share the same belief that Galadriel’s strength, what made her the most powerful being in Middle Earth, is her wisdom and foresight. Giving her a sword and saying “Now HERE is a strong female lead” is so… fucking insulting. I’m a feminist, ffs! It infuriates me. Add to that I’m a, eh, fan isn’t the correct word; scholar is a bit overreaching. I know my shit, yeah? Those bastards aborted Tolkien’s work. And there is something fishy going on with the money laundering Amazon is doing with this shit show for sure.
I really loved this rendition of Galadriel because it showed me that I can also be a strong, independent woman, which the original Galadriel didn't really deliver on. When have you seen her squatting like a man? Wielding a sword? Talking down to literally everyone? Talking to a tortured soul with absolute malice? Taking pyroclastic flow into the face and walking it off? Yeah I didn't think so. And this is why this "new" Galadriel is what I aspire to be.
I wrote a scathing review about the show and surprise, surprise it was posted by Amazon. A day, later I forwarded the email where they thanked me for the review to friends. I was told they couldn't access the review as the page no longer existed. It was OK one moment but not the next??? Shows you how Amazon is stacking the deck and trying to keep reviews in the plus column.
Great video. This channel is criminally undersubbed. Love to see you work with other Brit’s like Az, Disparu, Mauler etc. I wonder, given enough buzz could we get you on FNT?
Hey those guys make great content but I think I’m gonna have to prove myself for a lot longer until they’ll invite me anywhere but I’ll do my best and you guys are insanely supportive so who knows 🤷🏻♂️ maybe one day bro
@@JonnyLawYTAs a teacher, I am stealing that road sign translation for future powerpoints! In Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, they have some road signs in Gaelic and English that will leave you wondering "how the heck did they develop those words!"
There’s a scene in Hobbit Battle of the 5 Armies that perfectly encapsulates Galadriel in all her power when she banishes Sauron and his minions without the use of a sword and armor.
her being stiff, unapproachable and emotionless doesn´t bother me. that´s a very elvish thing. u rarely see an elf lose control over their feelings. what bothers me is that bitter attitude, war-hungry, Lara Croft arrogant portrayal of Galadriel. That´s not her. Galadriel can be terrifying(in ways that don´t include her swinging a sword like a barbarian) , but she is known for being wise, gentle, elegant, regal. And Tolkien made it VERY clear she was a strong, independent woman with an own mindset, NOBODY ever doubted that. I don´t even mean that in a "feminine-strong" way, where she is a powerful queen but wouldn´t fight "like a man" (warning Frodo that she most definitely would reign with cruelty and terror if she had the ring, disintegrating orcs on the spot and sending Sauron into time-out are not inherently "lady-like" manners.) Now she looks like an angry child, who has a bad temper the moment she doesn´t IMMEDIATELY get what she wants. sad.
When I first saw Clark I thought she was reasonably good-looking. Not Cate Blanchett level but decent enough. Seeing her "in action" did away with that notion in seconds. Her stiffness just kills it. BUT I'm absolutely certain that with this excuse for material not even Cate Blanchett could have done what she did in the trilogy. Also, despite the intention, I don't even find her masculine. She is just mindlessly hostile. P. S. I doubt those two clowns were actually calling trolls evil. They were most likely referring to legitimate criticism.
Good video. I have always held that likability is crucial for a series lead. Basically, we are inviting these characters into our home once a week. With Galadriel, (as with the Dwarf King in the Hobbit Trilogy), I just wanted her to leave.
Least I can say about Thorin in the Hobbit films, was that he had understandable reasons for being grumpy, which was clearly pointed out in the prequel scenes via the extended version of An Unexpected Journey; but with RoP, we don't get as clear an idea of Galadriel's reasons for her tempermental personality, outside of seeking revenge for her brother's death.
She doesn't look like Cate Blanchett's Galadriel. Morfydd Clark looks like that woman in charge of the show, I don't know what is her name. Basically what she did, is similar to what KK of Lucasart did. This version of Galadriel is a self-insert like all of KK's self-insert.
Damn... that was a really good clip here. You summerised everything spot on what's wrong with modern entertainment. The other great dissapointment is the new Marvel Phase IV on Disney- ... that one was also slammend into the ground. ROP, well, they failed and the show is lost before it even begun. Six seasons they want to go? They can call themself lucky if anyone watches season 2 in two years. I don't think they even make it to season 3. If season 2 will be great then I really don't know how they pull it of. They have to restart the show completly to do that. For this I am afraid they even have to recast main actors here. And... sometimes I think they even lied about the production costs here for I really don't see what possibly could have cost so much money for every episode. The armor of the knights or whatever looked like they had come straight from a 3D printer... maybe the CGI was so costly, maybe and I really don't think it was that pricy here. It looked okay in most places but nothing out of the ordinary nowadays like in other productions. If you want to see what is really up-to-date and even beyond you have to watch the upcoming Avatar 2 movie. And... the actors on ROP are not getting top-Dollars here, so what on Earth was so expansive? Did Amazon Studies did throw everything at the rights and the marketing and CGI? It almost looks like it, that said, it would also explain why they hired such shitty nobodys of a writer team... they were cheap (but sadly also incompetent).
The Amazon showrunners gave AmazonGaladriel the traits THEY admired. Which says something about them. It also shows they were absolutely clueless about Tolkien.
I don't want to read to deeply into this but the point about Galadriel's traits and the conflict with the way they try to frame her,I think stems for the fact that the writers think that they created a good, role model character, but because they are out of touch with what characteristic make a decent human being (which the elves are suppose to represent, the purity of humanity,an ideal to be emulated),they made her this way. To say, they think this is what an idealized human should behave. Like I said I don't want to read to much into the intentions of the writers but the dissonance between her character and the way they frame her as being correct almost always, seems to not be a dissonance in their mind because that's how we all should act.
Commander of the Northern Armies.... we never see an army. Balrog wakes up, realizes R.O.P. still playing on tele and goes back to sleep for another millennium or 10.
I’ve visited Wales. I asked where the bathroom was. I have no idea what the lady said to me. Something about stairs and a corner. I ended up in a castle.
I think there's a big difference in stage acting and acting for movies. Stage actors perform in front of real people, they get feed back from the audience in the form of clapping, cheering, laughing or booing. Movie actors are performing in front of the director and their coworkers. If these movie actors don't have experience performing on stage, its a huge disadvantage. And if the director likes what they are doing, then you get this feed back loop of unskilled people and there's no audience to make it obvious when they've done something boring or something that would make the audience groan. I think this is why we get these weird scenes in modern movies; stage actors and directors are constantly being humbled by live audiences whereas movie actors and directors can make their product in a vacuum and never have to hear the collective groans and boos that we're all making in front of our screens.
To expand on the point of bad writing, I feel that it speaks volumes about what the character ended up being when the showrunners stated that most of her plot centering around Numenor came from looking to see what Tolkien did not state. He did not state that she never went to Numenor, regardless of implications from what he did state, therefore she went fo Numenor.
