The Rise and Fall of Don Bluth 

There's a lot to criticize about this man, BUT... I would rather live with the worst of his movies than the best of Sony or Illumination. Those movies are hard to criticize because they have nothing unique about them, visually or story-wise. Uneven and bizarre as Bluth's movies can be, at least they have some personality behind them.

Seems like what happened was Bluth had a formula in the '80s that worked--cutesy-wootsy characters go through traumatic shit--but then took out the darker elements in the '90s and just focused on the cutesy-wootsy part.

Nostalgia is the word here, such a feeling in those early Bluth films.

Bluth is the product of someone whose whole knowledge of film and film history begins and ends with Disney animated films, which is what ultimately limited him both as an artist and a storyteller. He never really had the vision or storytelling ability to take animation to a new, unexplored place.

It's sad that Don Bluth's animation career, went down the drain. I'd rather have his beautiful 2D hand-drawn animation (both in movies and video games) around today, instead of all the 3D and live action remakes we get now.

Great review of Don Bluth's legacy. Anastasia was really great, and all former movies - I remember being scared at the Black Cauldron. Hope to see other videos like this.

This was a fantastic deep dive into Bluth, who is probably my favorite animated film maker from my childhood;) The Secret Of Nimh and Dragon's Lair were integral to my development as a child!! Great job Brooks!!🤘😆🤘

Bad character development in Rock-a-doodle!?! The Grand Duke is STILL my favorite childhood villain ever! He was evil while BAKING PIES, and doing CROSS STITCH! And the nephew and his ridiculous lines were GOLD! Plus Goldie's character arc was unique at the time. As you can tell it is my favorite. Thumbelina, Pebble and the Penguin (again- Tim Curry as the villain!) and Anastasia all close behind. Great video by the way!

Really cool video. I'm a huge fan of Don Bluth myself and I love his 80's films(Secret of Nimh, An American Tail, Land Before Time, and All Dogs go to Heaven). Heck, An American Tail is my favorite movie of all time. Even though Don Bluth bump some roads here and there in the 90's, I do enjoy them. I like Rock a Doodle and Pebble and the Penguin, even though I admit they could've been a lot better too. While the Troll in Central Park is not good, even there's some things I like in this film like the animation(No matter the quality of Bluth's films, Don Bluth always nailed in the animation department). I love Anastasia and Titan A.E, they're right up there with great classics like Secret of Nimh, An American Tail, and the Land Before Time. I highly have huge respect and admire Don Bluth, he clearly shows his huge love for animation and made a lot of great content out of it that are still amazing and timeless, even to this very day. Even when there's some misses in his 90's work, you can tell the passion he has behind all of it. If he makes a new animated film, I'll definately check it out. Pretty sad Dragon's Liar is on limbo to release last I heard, it is the new film I really look forward to watching.

Excellent Historical Review. I'm an animator and huge fan of Bluth's Film and IP. Watching this video I better understand that it was never ambition or mutiny why he went out on his own. Disney studio lost it. I was a teen when Dragon's Lair came out and played it all the time at the corner store. I have several of his movies and intructional DVDs. He will always historically be considered an animation hero.

Today Anastasia is now a Disney movie due to Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, but Yes even before the mouse house acquired Fox it was always mistaken as a Disney movie

Happy 30th Anniversary To Thumbelina and A Troll In Central Park (1994-2024)

The All Dogs Go to Heaven TV series & Fievel Goes West are the only good spinoffs to come from Don Bluth that he wasn't involved in. Rockadoodle was disappointing. "Sun Do Shine" was the only decent song in the whole movie. Fun fact: It was based on a rejected Disney script. I initially hated Thumbellina as a kid, but grew to love it as a teenager. "Let Me Be Your Wings" was Don Bluth's "Magic Carpet Ride." Not sure which troll movie was worse; A Troll in Central Park or The Little Troll Prince. That's a hard toss-up.
