I am actually really impressed the band made the connection between Jonny’s opioid use and his hearing loss in 2007... the connection wasn’t widely understood in the medical community until around 2012, with more research in 2018 and earlier this year finally making it more publicly known. I know this seems like a weird take away from that blog post but I work in opioid treatment so it caught my attention.
In 2011, I was working on Warped and this gentleman was a constant topic during the tour for many reasons. My personal experience with him is as follows: On the Arizona date, always one of the most brutal dates of the entire tour, I walked to catering hoping for any morsel of leftover food as I missed my opportunity to grab something. I walked into the room as they were tearing down the lunch setup, asking anyone on staff for leftover food. Also in this room was JC, laughing with several other people (mostly catering staff) gathered around a TV watching the movie ‘You Got Served’. I left the room briefly to follow a staff member who was able to find a shiny red apple, and when I walked back in the previous room JC was, I saw him now alone watching ‘You Got Served’ by his lonesome. The guy I saw laughing just 90 seconds prior, was now quiet and stoic. I didn’t interact with him verbally, but I saw what appeared to be a very sad and lonely man, watching this movie and deep in thought. I walked away from that moment feeling kind of bad for him, as that felt kind of like a weird summary of his career. Brief moments of friends and happiness, followed by loneliness and no smiles in sight. I never saw him again after that day. That apple was scrumptious as well.
idk He's not born into being a bad person, however he's been an adult doing dumb shit and by this point, no one can excuse this "man" anymore for the traumatic experiences he's experienced in his adolescence.
@@ReanuKeaves1 bringing up shit he did doesn't mean he'd do it again or that he does not regret it, as far as I'm concerned he's sober (I mean look how fat he got lol), he's a dad, how many times does a man have to apologize to get people off of his backs, many of his trash talkers haven't even had a bad experience with him so
idk I don't follow him, I'm merely talking about the block of time this video portrays him. During this time, he was a piece of shit and no past experiences excuse him for those actions. The only way is, as you are saying, that he seems clear of drugs, dedicated to his family, and not repeating past offenses. That to me is a man of redemption.
The problem with Jonny Craig is simple, he was born 2 decades too late, he without a doubt would've been the typical rockstar of the 80s and 90s, ego, substance problem, heir of arrogance and a too good for your bulls*** attitude 😅
I actually played a show with Ghost Runner On Third, I remember thinking they kind of sucked but the singer had huge potential. This was a trip to watch, thanks for making it
DO A DANCE GAVIN DANCE SERIES AFTER THIS ONE. All the way from the vocalist changes, to "Swan-core" to Mess's absolutely insane lyrics. "Riding a rhino, pico de gallo, make a bisque, tomato basil shit"
DGD certainly has an interesting story. They were underdogs through out most of there career despite having a unique sound to them. Now they are the leaders of the genre. Back in the day when blogs ran the music and their first album dropped, hardly anyone was talking about it even though it was head and shoulders above their peers. They got a bump in popularity when JC got kicked out but it was all about the controversy and not the music. That would be the story for them until Tillian joined and they were finally being appreciated for their music.
@@mudkips8399 Ehh, can't say I agree with that. DBM put them on the map and Jonny quickly became one of the most well-known voices in the scene. They did pretty well during the Kurt years (Uneasy Hearts being their best-selling song on itunes still). Then DBM2 and Blue Dream was a hit. Then they finally found a good frontman to stick around and swancore is in full effect. They were never underdogs, it's just that with all the line-up changes and drama, nobody was ever certain of their future or what would become of them. I started listening to DGD when DBM came out and to say nobody was talking about it is patently false. "bump in popularity when JC got kicked" this doesn't make sense. JC is a huge reason why they gained popularity so quickly. That's why it was a big deal when he was kicked. Otherwise, why would anyone have cared? They go hand-in-hand. Your take is bad tbh.
@@Washanuga That was my experience. DBM came and went, and with what attention they got, it was just a lot of "yet another sing/scream" band. With their unique traits being overlooked and people hating hating Jon Mess' vocals. Huge sites "scene" like absolutepunk barely covered it. People were way more in interested in other bands at the time. Metalcore bands, and bands like ADTR and PTV were getting way more attention. And yes Jonny getting kicked out did more for the band than him being in, in the early years. People loved the controversy and especially because it had such a terrible blog detailing why he was kicked out. Uneasy Hearts did okay, but the entirety of Happiness did more for them and got them on Warped. I'm not saying they were some unknown band. They were above a sea similar but nameless bands at the time, but they weren't leaders then either. Looking back more closely I would say DBM2 got them much more recognition, but by then people had also had more time to reflect on the past material plus Jonny was also with Emarosa at the time which. So to correct myself, DBM2 was when they started leading the pack, but Tillian still brought them to another level.
Admittedly, I am a very devoted fan of Jonny's art while highly critical of his being. This video struck the perfect balance of praising him artistically (some of my favorite clips of his performances were shown! + got the context around some of these concerts) and holding him accountable for really shitty behavior. Your analysis of every one of his albums was completely on point. Overall, very glad I watched this and excited for part two. To me, Children of Divorce is so powerful in how blatantly toxic it is, but confirms so much of what we already know about Jonny: he's a pretty abusive addict. Other than that, I would have still considered DBM II to be at his peak, everything after it is going down the slope though. Intrigued to see your commentary on that album and Slaves.
Slaves- I’d Rather See Your Star Explode still plays on my playlists today but Emarosa I think has more songs that are considered “hard rock” and his latest content he is putting out I feel like he holds himself back vocally but also I miss the guitar sound instead of more electronic sound he has for now but I am proud of his will to keep making music after all the years and the hate he’s received and unfortunately still receives when most rappers have murdered multiple people and get praise for freedom but Jonny gets more hate even still smh
I guess I don’t view it as a waste in that she never did anything that gave me cause to regret loving her music so I think I misunderstood the reply lol sorry
@@Tinklebellx that's fair both are still wastes of natural talent. But at least Johnny gets to keep his life. Hope he will and/or has changed for the better
This was great, dude. As an addict in recovery now for almost ten years, i can't describe how hard opiates can take ahold of you if you're a myopic, depressed, intelligent person. Because, deep down, you know that you shouldn't be living like this but literally the ONLY things that can make you feel anything are the drugs and when you get on stage and collect the adoration of fans. You yearn to feel something every day and to connect with people but nothing does it, outside of those things and everything else falls to the wayside. Its a nightmare and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, and believe me, that shit is so powerful it really CAN capture anyone the same way it captured me. Anyways, apologies for the after-school special, I appreciate the video and respect the work you've put in to them
One of the best moments of my life was in 2008 a couple days before leaving for college, I went to see dgd playing with a static lullaby. This was shortly after the death star album came out, and me and my two buddies ran into Mingus before hand and went and smoked a bowl in their tour van (it was incredible how fucking tight he was after smoking.) After they played we saw them outside and asked if they wanted to smoke a blunt and they were like “fuck yeah” so my two boys went to roll it up at the car and I sang “Woe” by Say Anything with Kurt Travis and a couple of the dudes from A Static Lullaby in their tour van (absolutely incredible experience, it still feels like a dream) everyone was super chill. The boys came back, we smoked a fat one right on the street in Albany. Will Swan didn’t say much. He kind of just puffed and hung out. I turned to him and I was like “Will, what happened with Jonny?” All he said was “he’s just a fucking asshole.” And that’s was that.
Dude, Jon Mess invited me and my two buddies at the Scream It Like You Mean It Tour in 2011/2012 at the House of Blues in Anaheim. I couldn’t believe how open and cool they were with their fans. Answered all sorts of questions we had. Jon gave me his number 😂 lol. DGD is just an amazing band
I feel so bad for all the old girlfriends who’s life he ruined. It’s a shame cause he had such an amazing voice but it’s hard to enjoy knowing the type of person he is.
Ken Cohort How can you just ignore someone’s extremely abusive behavior? How can you even support someone like that? Looking past this stuff means you’re just as bad.
Awesome narrating, editing and history. I like the lo-fi simple digital camera res and linear synopsis. It makes an 87 min video digestible. Not overstimulating and distracting but not dry and witless either
Man I remember when I was still using (I’m 7 months sober) and he came into my exes house to chill and buy some h and I got the worst vibes from this fool 👁 👄 👁 hes the type to steal from u and help u look for whatever he stole
Man, well done. Came for the Jonny Craig clips, stayed for the extensively-researched, passionate chronicle of the man’s entire history. I can’t begin to imagine the work you put into compiling all this information and weaving it all into a comprehensive whole. Subscribed, liked, and eager for part 2!
@@reedderdich4787 did you see them live when Jonny was in them? It was a painful experience, last time I saw them he was pretty incoherent and spent most of set being held up by Jon.
I was such a hater when Tillian became frontman, and to this day, their sound is not my cup of tea like it was in the DTBM days. I'm really glad they kept going though; who knows what they would currently be if Jonny had gotten his shit together.
i'm sorry but the story about the ghost runner member showing up at a party with brass knuckles just so he can punch johnny in the head, yell "youve never done anything for this band", and then storm away sounds like a fucking comedy sketch. if i were at that party and witnessed that go down with zero context i would fucking cry laughing.
It’s really sad to see what happened to him with his addiction. As a kid, I was obsessed with his voice and every band he switched to. It was upsetting when he kept getting himself into these controversies. When I got older I had my own problems with opiates, so I can understand where he went wrong. hope he’s gotten his act together

Makes me feel old seeing the poster at 29:28 advertising "the return of Glassjaw!" because I still think of Glassjaw as a new-ish band, and they were already on the comeback trail 13 years ago
Man, I grew up around the same time this stuff was popping off, and I was never into it. I think your research is insane... you are a great story teller and are totally captivating. Definitely among the top content creators on this website, especially within the music genre. Super refreshing to get information that I know NOTHING about. Keep going... I'll keep watching. Stoked.
I just recently started getting into this group. I'm glad he made these 3 videos about Jonny, now I have more insight on their history. I definitely like the Tilian albums better tho, at least at the moment...idk, I may try to listen to the Craig stuff eventually, but after hearing what an asshole he was/is... it kinda turned me off😔 Blue Dream is pretty tight tho..& i always love Mess' parts of any DGD jam
I am/was Jonny Craig in my younger years, minus the band and voice. Hardcore drugs, stealing, abuse, disrespectful, carefree. 8.5 years off heroin now, and life together.
I literally saw homie buy his own CDs from Rise's tent at warped tour so he could up the price at DGDs tent. He was great when I saw him fill in for A Skylit Drive 13 years ago though
Very random question TCR.. but I would like to see a Playlist on spotify made by you. If you have spotify and also loving the channel and another awesome video!!
as someone who first heard of jonny craig through taylor nicole dean and who only started listening to dance gavin dance a few weeks ago this feels like a very necessary history lesson so thanks for all your hard work!!
I don't understand the comments of his wasted talent. The dude has managed to release over a dozen albums, tour the world as a professional musician, and is widely regarded as a phenomenal vocalist, all while being a gigantically broken person. Most people can't do that.
I think they meant in a commercially successful way. Like pop famous. He’s well known among emo and scene kids, but to a casual listener or not interested in emo music they go “who?”.
Three years late lol but when I think of his “wasted talent…” I mostly think of how people use their talents to improve their lives. We love a success story and Jonny just makes you angry and disappointed. It’s not my life, but art feels like it is meant to inspire and behind the curtain it’s just tragedy. Which I guess is also poetic.
For real, I don't know much about this guy's life, but I do know there are some mixed opinions. All I know is he has one of the most incredible voices in this genre, and is easily one of my top 5 vocalists of all time.
@@dw_moto no prob. I hate myself for following him on ig all these years. It's like when you can't help but to gawk at an accident on the side of the road 😅

God the feels... I still remember the exact moment I heard Jonnys voice for the first time. Emarosa: The Past Should Stay Dead popped up on my xboxs zune playlist. Changed my life with his voice, and I still go back to all his various music selections when I need to get through emotional situations.
It’s crazy hearing the festival story. I was in a band that was supposed to play with DGD a few days later, and I remember getting the call that the show was cancelled cause they had kicked their singer out. I didn’t even really know who they were at the time. We were just kind of a later replacement for another band.
I was tweeting about Johnny the other day saying that nobody had really done a deep dive video on him. And someone linked me this. I stand corrected this was awesome dude!
This video litterally feels like watching a biography about my own teenage years. This is so amazing, jonny craigs voice is so unique, and the second you hear it. You know who it is, and that will never change all over the world. Growing up a black in the suburbs, dgd was the band that spoke to me on every level, and im so proud to come from that scene
Makes me feel bad for Will Swan. Dude put so much hard work to get the band up & running while bending over backwards to babysit a man child who was tearing the band apart. Good for them for finally putting their foot down. If they would’ve kept Jonny in, no doubt the band would not exist today
Can we have little metalcore, emo, post hardcore babies together please lol. In all seriousness, love the video. You are a great storyteller and I get excited when I see a notification from your channel. Thank you for breathing new life into the stories behind these amazing musicians. You’re awesome.
Hahahahaha so funny. I learned all the “words”to every song on that album and i ended up just muttering some verses cuz I could not for the life of me interpret what he was saying. Hearing this makes me feel so much better about what I thought were my failed efforts
i have p much the same opinion about children of divorce as you. his lyrics were super harsh and the girl dodged a bullet by leaving with her child, especially now that we’ve seen how he treats women and how YIKES of a person he is. such a dope video by the way, i love your content so much!
Ugh. Was so so SO ready and needing another video of yours. I suspect we're near the same age and I wish we were friends IRL. Another well-researched video and cant wait to use at an example for my students' final project assignment this semester 🙃
The biggest nostalgia bomb of all time. Loving these videos man. The amount of detail and research and effort is insane. Thanks for taking me back to when I was 16, obsessed with Johnny. I saw Emarosa at manchester academy and johnny told me he only gives autographs to cute girls. Nice chap.
kick ass video. I always knew who Jonny Craig was, but never followed the scene closely outside of occassionally listening to DGD and Isles and Glaciers. Great roll-up of the history of everything. Starting part 2 right now!
You’re a really good historian! I was always more into Metalcore/Metal/Deathcore but it’s cool to hear the history of these emo/post hardcore bands is cool. There’s a fair amount of crossover too.
During the Jonny's solo album part, you missed to point out that Tillian Pearson (current DGD vocalist) was playing on his band. You can see him playing guitar and singing on the video
@@jeffbell4434 yeah he got denied. He took a picture of him flipping off the email. It’s because of his drug usage and already being on labels for the music industry.
As a first video that I've watched of you, you have an amazing style. Like I didn't plan to watch this video in all one sitting. I was very entertained and excited to see part 2
my boyfriend and i met johnny craig at a lil xan concert while he was taking a row of shots at the bar. we were more so shocked that he was at a little xan show at this rundown little bar venue in tempe az lmao
You’re making fun of Jonny being in this rundown little bar...but obviously you were there at that Lil Xan concert too. If you’re trying to make fun of him for being there, then you have to make fun of yourself since you were there as well...the only difference is you probably paid to get in. Lol 🤦♀️🤦♀️
Going from high school loser to touring warped and having your whole life changed is a hell of a drug. I used to tour with a lot of these guys and let me just give you a little mental image. Ronnie radke and I living in a house. Snorting 39 oxies a day. 50 desktops all surrounding the walls of the house all running bots. Sitting down with a cigarette in one hand and all his cloths in a garbage bag while we watch Kay Williams. Sober for 7 years. I’ve seen Warped tour fuck up a lot of guys. True story myself included
Another rad video. At 26 now these are so nostalgic to me, especially the nevershoutnever video. I actually meet chris about a year before the infamous Bryan stars event, he was actually a really sound geezer. Wonder what hes up to now
I love Downtown Battle Mountain. It has my favorite song ever in it. I love Relativity. I love the WesterHALTS demo. I love Speak your dreams. But. I cant help but feel astounded on how small Isles and Glaciers is. Some of the best music i’ve ever heard. I love the ice like theme.
THE HEARTS OF LONELY PEOPLE IS FOREVER MY FAVORITE ALBUM. Even friends of mine who aren’t into the scene love the full album and it makes me happy that it was created lol
There are few bands that nailed the dichotomy like Dance Gavin Dance, Saosin, Alexisonfire, Sleeping with Sirens, Emarosa and the final boss, Isles & Glaciers. I would support someone that tried to argue the case for BMTH in there, but ultimately dismiss them because having heard every single one of these bands live, Anthony Green, Kellin, Dallas, Jonny, Kurtis and Tilian all have those voices that make your heart ache without aid. Oliver just isn't as naturally gifted of a singer. No one does it better than Jonny, and I honestly believe if he hadn't gotten so caught up, he'd have a career like Dallas or Anthony do where he'd still record with DGD but he'd also have a more solo career. Isles and Glaciers is such a tease because it is the perfect culmination of these minds meeting and creating magic. I still think strawberry swisher is one of the greatest musical threads ever. I get so excited for your videos to nerd out about music I love, even when it's about the sucky shit the people that made it did. Just do me a favor, never ruin deftones for me, ok? Love your channel!

@@NicoAcrasia Why? it is true. Your voice changes when you're on opiates. He still has a good voice without the raspiness, but most people know it as a trademark voice.
Nicholas Douglas not OP but raspiness of the voice is most certainly a side effect of opioid use. Not saying it was his intention or not to sound like that, but it’s indisputable that he wouldn’t sound like that while using opiates.
@@nbar1 Maybe it is but also normal is the maturation of your voice and change in sound of your voice over time. There are countless singers who's voice has changed and evolved to include raspiness, grittiness etc including my own voice. I can tell you I've never used opioids in my life but I get compared to Jonny Craig's voice all the time and my voice certainly didn't always sound that way.
Excellent video! You need an award for best scene historian 😂. Hadn’t thought of children of divorce in that way before. I still listen to it regularly cause it’s my favorite song to sing. I don’t think anyone can comment on the dynamics of the relationship (or lack thereof). but I can definitely see what you’re getting at, especially with the backdrop of Jonny’s public image. Looking forward to part 2!
