I'm an animation student. On the first lecture I had with one of my teachers, he made us watch Tekkonkinkreet, and then it's making of, because he wanted to show us how cool animation could look, and how horrible it could be as a workplace environment ..
Literally my favorite animation studio house in Japan. I've watched Tekkon Kintreet in high school when it first came out back in '06 or '07. Literally one of the best.
I still wish 4C would've been able to continue doing Berserk because I really thought they put it all together in that 3rd movie it was horrifically beautiful
@@o-wolf I can't believe people complained about the 3D in the movies. It's fucking berserk. Do they really expect any studio to animate hundreds of soldiers all fighting their own battles in 2D? I really hope that the memorial edition of the movies does well, so then maybe studio4C will continue the adaptation. The movies were absolutely fantastic visually, the only things I didn't like was the pacing and cut scenes.
@@deepfriedcelt I felt like the pacing/deleted scenes worked for movie pacing.. if u werent a fan u didn't miss MUCH.. if you're already a fan u knew what u missed &weren't lost We were spoilt really.. the 100 man slayer scene was EPIC.. guts v bazuso EPIC.. the eclipse.. JFC ! There were even some major improvements like Guts assassination run.. I doubt they'll ever come around after how the last one was received but we can live in hope
@@o-wolf according to whether the movies raised enough to continue even with the cgi criticism. The ones who screwed up were young animal, the editorial of berserk since they did not want to continue with the animations and in 2016 they wanted to continue them again, but as the 4c studio was busy they could not take it and what we already know happened, I hope now if they give us the adaptation what they had planned to give us from the beginning with 4C
I watched it recently on some random site it just happened to be on, and I was surprised how good it was. Still resonates with me and really personified the vibe I love the most from Anime.
Hello everyone hope you enjoyed 4cember and this super video version with, this video is in copyright hell and im too tired to fight it, so i cant make anything off it so any support would be much appreciated i need to go lay down for a long time thank you for watching! www.patreon.com/stevemmmmm
@@AbrahamLure the auto captions might be okay but i'll try and do a bit more on the subs tomorrow i basically shoved in all of my scripts but theres going to be differences
I think the reason why the 3D backgrounds in 4℃ productions usually work so well, is in their older titles they are textured over with hand-painted art or are traditional art in a 3D space. This helps it blend in better with the 2D art or at least contrast it in a positive way. Studio Trigger accomplished the same thing in Kill La Kills first episode where they have a giant zoom out of the school, it's 3D but using Pablos gouache art as both texture and background.
I just watched children of the sea, just thinking about the amount of work that went into it and meshing it together into something this beautiful is terrifying. I hope the animation staff is fairly treated but I still want movies like this to keep being made. Keep it up studio 4c!
There's an animation 4C did I think called Kung Fu Love, as part of a collection called Amazing Nuts. It was animated to Koda Kumi's song Twinkle and I remember loving that short animation a lot back in highschool. Still something I think back to fondly. It was colorful and fun and refreshing at the time. Wonderful retrospective video, man. And was pleased to see Puparia referenced as well. The Archipel documentary on that is fantastic. ...I'll sub lol.
Toujin might have a bit of popularity due to Tatsuyuki Tanaka having an extremely popular bookset titled, "Cannabis Works, 1 and 2," among his big name film credits as well as being an iconic and incredible animator... I actually found out about him before knowing about genius party through finding his books in multiple friend's collections..
This documentaries are so well made it feels wrong to be able to watch them for free. I can't support you on Patreon, but I'll be sure to keep engaging with your work. Great job.
I watched Animatrix this year and was shocked at how good it was. For some reason I always assumed it was some knock off cash grab, but it was almost the exact opposite.
The uploads have been coming fast and furious! And the quality is so good! I don't have time to watch everything, but I just wanted to say that I notice (and I'm sure others have too), that you're creating work like a crazy person. Much love and respect and I wish I had that kind of energy. Cheers and Happy New Year! :)
dude your dubbing in of the correct words with that ancient text to speech actually shocked my focus on what you were talking about, just dub it in your real voice I'd prefer an audio jumpcut to a TTS jumpscare lol
I have playlist of their work on Utada album. And I also really enjoy Animatrix and I really did some digging into them after watching their work on Utada album after realizing the styles were basically the same. I really enjoy their work and style. I seem to like to follow the animators coming out Ghibli / Madhouse / Bones / Gainax and those worked with them.
Good work on your project with 4C. I watched all your material in relation to this compendium and seriously appreciate the effort thats put in. Keep on keeping on Boss
I really liked this video and was surprised with how much information you were able to fit in *and* make it all flow naturally! I was kind of hoping Amazing Nuts would have made an appearance, but this video is long enough as it is, and I don't know how much could really have been said about it, other than Kung Fu Love was apparently supposed to be a full series, but was reduced to a 10 minute short that ended up being used for a Kumi Koda music video. Keep up the good work! :D
….I hate these rise (& fall) videos…video is dope itself but like it doesn’t do any favours for people still working there…like again great work out into this but sick & tired of these clock bait titles. the fall seriously…like yo.
So Koji Morimoto fucks, to the point he made it into a quote applicable to the rest of everyone else lives. What a chad and considerate lover. Edit: oh yeah forgot, my all time favorite 4C production, man i don't know Tekkonkinkreet is the one that made appreciate anime as something more than just cartoons, but Genius Party and Beyond were the ones that made love anime, but i think i like Genius Party more for the variety, but Tekkon is so damn good too tho! I think Tekkon it is, that's my all time favorite 4C production.
And here I was thinking that the only things Studio 4^C ever made were the 2011 ThunderCats series and that anime fight scene from that one episode of Gumball. Oh me from 2 minutes and four seconds ago, you were such a naïve summer child.
Actually the Spriggan movie was very well received by the fans of the manga. Keep in mind that it was the adaptation of a later chapter when the story and the style were already much more refined (i guess that Kojima read it during the early '90 all things considered) compared to the beginning. Aside from the Instanbul part (added to extend the length of the story) it's extremely faithful to the Noah chapter of the manga, going as far as recreating a lot of scenes perfectly. It leaves off various thing that would have needed too much explanations of the setting, but it's perfectly understandable why they did that. They also incorporated a lot of later development not included in the original chapter (like Ominae origin) which benefited a lot the characterization of the main character. The Netflix adaptation by comparison will start from the beginning of the manga, meaning that it may be disappointing for those who only watched the movie and it's also no guaranteed to go on until it reach the really good stuff.
WOW, I'm new to anime but are there any other anime studios which produce anime this epic? Is there any other studio which makes anime as nice as Spriggen or Memories? I've seen anime before, but this has so much personality, uniqueness.
@@Stevem Michiko & Hatchin. Don't remember who created it but it's one I really loved to watch. The atmosphere, humor, and vibrant colors were awesome. ✌
I started binging the other videos first and skipping over the sections I watched already in this one was really satisfying. I had your december videos in my watch later playlist without having clicked on them cause I was overwhelmed with how many you kept posting, but I was like let’s go through them today alongside some other of your older longer videos like vampire hunter and lupin and watched them all in an evening. really enjoyable videos, great editing too. I could barely tell time was passing, lots of interesting information in them etc, idk what else to say, hope you find success with what you’re doing.
Have loved 4°c since Ken Ishii's music video, found on sputnik7's website (welllll didn't know it was 4°c at the time). Then Spriggan & Sweat Punch etc, but absolutely LOVED Tekkon Kinkreet, hope they can continue to produce such amazing pieces. (And you know, not shaft their staff completely in the process?)
Fun review of the studio's major projects making me want to revisit everything you talked about in here. But I can't help but feel like it could've used one more "misc shorts" chapter doing more justice to the various shorts. You mentioned a handful in passing sprinkled throughout, so talking about those in their own chapter as well as bringing up others like Sweat Punch (Comedy, from the Sweat Punch/Deep Imagination anthology, was a noticeable snub from this), Tobira o Akete, Hijikata Toshizou, etc, would've been cool. All in all really solid though
I recommend using a hard limiter or an automatic noise reduction filter and set the decibel to the empty noise of where ever you record to add better audio quality and clear out the fuzziness in the audio. Regardless I really like your videos and commentary
@@Stevem maybe? I mean I don't know your set up at all I found you a few days ago and started going through your stuff newest to oldest. From what I hear your audio quality is crystal clear it's just also picking the common static form the recording hardware itself. And I a hard limiter or audio noise reduction filter should clear that out without compromising the quality... but again I don't know anything about your recording process/rendering
@@Stevem oh and I meant the guy who unsubbed had a weak attention span... because who complains over good long content??? Sorry if my grammar is a bit off I'm kinds buzzed
@@BiblicallyAccurateAngelo its hardware issues, it's working a bit better now, hard limiter wouldnt fix it. Im not huge on noise reduction either in how it makes the audio sound, some of the worst effective parts probs already had some added here im hoping it will be in a better place next time
@@Stevem it doesn't take away from the video one bit!! It's amazing content and I enjoyed listening to it while I passout XD. Like I mentioned I'm not super sure what specific room/software/hardware you use. You say it's an issue and I agree. I just wanted to point out a couple possible solutions... constructive criticism thats like... actually helpful? There's lots of ways to get rid of it I just threw a couple quick and easy usual fixes :3
Lol, uh, most "refined" version you're going to find is the 2003 R2 Japanese release, and the 2008 Japanese Blu-ray, both of which I own. But fun video. I do love Western/UK fans of Japanese animation who seem to be willfully ignorant of the Japanese home video release.
Very rare to studio that constantly do stylistic or experimental project. Nowadays every studio trying to make something like Demon Slayer or JJK, which is getting boring honestly. Science Saru, Trigger, WIT are probably some of my only hope lol..
Too long didn't watch. I just know them for the excellent job they worked with Google in the Doodle Champion Island game, did anybody brought that to this video yet?
The movies were my first exposure to Berserk, as well as a friend I showed it to. I actually try to show people those movies as an introduction to the series. Why? It does omit some pretty important stuff, but ultimately it only has one encounter with Zodd and a horror sequence involving Void and Griffith to foreshadow the eclipse. Wyald is a neat fight, but I honestly think it's an unnecessary mini-arc that spoils the eclipse, they only really needed Zodd, everything else wasn't necessary. But the really important reason? The score. Shiro Sagisu absolutely nails it. I consider Blood and Guts to be the true "theme" of Berserk. Some of the fight scenes hit so hard because of how well they use the score. Plus, the dub cast is actually pretty great and I find it hard to imagine someone else as Guts besides Marc Diraison.
I think a great first exposure would be the Memorial Edition not the movies, is only 12 episodes but adds many scenes missing in the trilogy and improves animation overall The trilogy was my first exposure as well, afterwards I watched 97 anime, now I am on par with the manga If you are a gamer and Mousou fan the game can be a good first exposure as well I'm actually surprised the game adapts Ganishka, even Wyald that has no other adaption in media besides the manga I find the manga to be the best of course, but sometimes 97 anime ommits to much as well, not a single Skull Knight scene is almost unforgivable for me.
i clicked this video with the intention to just watch a few minutes. In the end i ended up watching most of it. Some stuff got skipped, but i must've watched some 80-85% of the video without break. it was nice to learn about this studio and recognise some works i watched before. Heck, it was nice to discover new works i would like to watch later
thanks for watching! ahha i didnt expect people to watch all at once since its a lot but if you ever feel like checking the rest i chaptered it all:)))
Damn.. Love the style on those Artist insert cutaways.. sketchbook with a splash of colour.... Even cycling those 2 frames... the crayon textures on the names. Great doc. cheers, mate. Just what i needed!
What up with NoiseMan Sound Insect !??? Why is it not reviewed here? That short film is the first production I saw from this studio and its timeless! with music by Yoko Kanno
Firstly, Not sure if you read these but this is a wonderful documentary! Would like to suggest a separate deep dive on Studio 4c’s “Amazing Nuts!” shorts. Specifically daisuke Nakayama’s short, “Global Astroliner” and it’s influence on his other short “U.G.A.T.”. The shorts were really cool additions and had inclusions of the hiphop/dance house/j-pop collective, M-Flo heading its soundtrack. Its a style really reminiscent of Jamie Hewlett’s art-style with a bit of an Eastern flair. I think his shorts have probably the best art style in the game but his stuff never really went anywhere independently. I think it may be something worth exploring if you’re interested because as much as id love to, I dont really have much means to compile and publish information myself currently 😅 still worth a view because the shorts and Daisuke Nakayama’s concept designs are INCREDIBLE i promise!
I only knew Studio 4C because of the works they did for Warner Bros Animation such as two of the six segments from Batman Gotham Knight, Justice League The Flashpoint Paradox, Thundercats, Green Latern Emerald Knights and the shorts from Tansformers Animated.
Cannon Fodder was my favorite part of Memories. And really, if you thought it just abruptly ends, I don't really think you caught what it was about. Been a while since I've watched it, but at the end, the kid asks the dad something like, "Who are we fighting?" The dad responds, "You'll understand when you're older." They've constructed their entire society around war. Maybe all the other rival armies have been defeated. Maybe there was never an enemy. The point it, there is no one they're actually fighting during the time that the story takes place, but they've got so deep into a single ideology, that their entire society would completely collapse if they tried to do anything different. So, they go through the steps everyday. They show propagandist news about "the enemy". They have artillery regiments firing into nothingness. The dad knows the truth of it. I'm sure most adults in the society knows it. The "You'll understand when you're older." is such a perfect satirical punchline to the entire film. It's a warning to all countries and culture on our planet. Paranoia will destroy a society the same way war can.
examinations of studios like this make me love drawing so much more. the scenes running in the narrow streets 'jackie chan of animation', I'm not an animator (yet) but drawing a 2d image, playing with movement and presence on the page is so so satisfying.
noooooooo berserk was so close to getting a nice adaptation. Edit:I searched up and found that berserk trilogy was made by studio 4°c. and i was fucking right i fucking loved berserk trilogy and i would have fucking loved them making the full anime even if it was not S tier adaptation i am good with berserk B or A tier animation.
I am a huge fun of original manga Children of the Sea and when I heard about the movie I was worried because so much of the story is conveyed visually by fantastic drawing instead of words which gave the manga its feel and doing so with animation would be impossible I thought. Then 4c proved me wrong but I still don’t really like the movie itself because it cut out so much of essential parts that I think most of people who’ve watched the movie would say the art was amazing but story was meh So I understand fans of original getting pissed but watching the video I feel real sad that after so much effort, love and sacrifice from stuff I wish this could have been better
The captions are out of sync, or just completely don't match up with the part of the video they're in, just a heads up It starts to happen like halfway through the Warning End section
my first experience with canon foder was actually a russian music video, i thought the animation was also Russian because of that especially because it dosent look much like anime
Tq for your hard work putting together this video, i was also was inspired by Studio4C, Koji Morimoto and especially Masaaki Yuasa, hopefully things will get better for the worker in 4C. My dream wanting to work in 4c slowly dissolved after knowing the true conditions working as manga/animator in Japan but they're the one who inspired me alot to draw everyday, tq again
great video and thanks for making it! watched it straight through with an intermission for a grocery store run. I've seen and enjoyed a number of these and never knew they were from the same studio. Tekkonkinkreet being one of my top fav animated films and anime ever
