Hostess Twinkies rose to icon status in the mid-1900s, becoming a mainstay in lunchboxes across America. But a heavy debt load and two bankruptcies almost killed Twinkies. In 2012, Twinkies left shelves for good... Until two guys, Andy and Dean, came up with a plan to save the iconic brand.

My aunt had a friend who went to the us bring back a huge box of all sorts of hostess products on the plane home. She was curious about about them after seeing them on shows and in movies. 8 year old me was so excited, they looked cool and it’s was something new and exciting, and I was utterly disappointed as soon as I bit into them. I disliked every single one of them, everyone did. My aunt ended up tossing out like more then half the box of unopened ones. I think it was like 40ish unopened ones she threw out. People would were excited to try, especially Twinkie’s. But as soon as they tasted them no one wanted them. I think twinkies and other hostess products is something you sort of need to grow up with to be able to like. Twinkies, ding dongs, snowballs, ho hos, they all just tasted like sugar and super artificial. It wasn’t that they tasted bad, just not good, in any way. Super sweet and so artificial tasting it barely felt like food. They had the typical packaged pastry texture, that is pretty bad, but not horrible. But the fillings... I don’t think I’ve even tasted anything that was as artificial tasting as the hostess stuff. What is that white filling stuff even supposed to be? I don’t think you could make anything resembling it outside a factory. When even a 8 year old thinks a baked good is too sweet it’s pretty extreme. What I’m saying is I don’t think hostess should try a product launch in Europe anytime soon.

The reason Twinkies "fell" had more to do with flavor than nutrition. ANYONE who tasted one in the late 2000's agreed that they had become absolutely terrible. Whatever they changed, it made for a terrible chemically taste that was worse than bad. I was a Twinkies lover as a kid...but I bought a box in 2010 and after discovering how terrible they were, I offered them to others (with a warning!) and EVERYONE agreed that these were NOT the Twinkies we grew up with! I suspect they removed some banned preservatives and replaced them with terrible tasting others.

When I was a kid, my mom had a recipe for Twinkies that tasted EXACTLY the same as store bought. I remember buying a box in the late 2000s and thought they were gross, so I got to wondering if my tastes had changed, or if the recipe had changed. I dug out my mom's recipe and made them again. They were heavenly, and everything that I remembered about Twinkies when I was a kid! Hostess, and this new revived Hostess, have cheapened up the recipe so much that it bears little resemblance to what we had a few decades ago. **EDIT** Good lord folks... so first of all, my mom made these for us boys growing up in the 70s and 80s. She quit making them when I was in high school, and I only ever baked them one time around 2007 or 2008, and that was with mom's help. In the years since, my mom's Alzheimers got progressively worse until she finally passed away. She had been meticulously organized all her life, but by the end, all of her recipes, filings, sewing supplies, sheet music etc were stashed away in the most random places you could imagine. I have spent several hours looking for this and several other dessert recipes without any success. I only remember a couple specific details about making these with mom... the recipe called for lard and cake flour. I don't remember exactly what was in the cream filling, but we beat egg whites for what seemed forever. Mom had an antique cast iron bun or maybe corn mold that we used for baking the Twinkies. I haven't been able to find that either. Sorry guys... That's the best I can do. There are a ton of Twinkie recipes on the internet. Look one up and if it uses lard and cake flour it might be the same, or at least similar to mom's recipe.

It's harder to chew and harder to digest. Anyone concur? I knew it. This video has confirmed a suspicion I've had for years now. It was the shelf-life extension. Interesting because honey itself has been used as a preservative for thousands of years due to its own near infinite shelf life. Depending on how said honey bun was made it may not have nearly as many chemicals as one might expect. The cake/doughy being completely coated in honey and/or sugar could theoretically isolate it from the air thereby keeping it soft for a long time indeed.
@gcm747

Some manufacturers will reverse the use by date so 2036 could have been June 3 2020 or 6 March 2020.

Which is exactly what happen to a lot of the bakeries. A lot of the same workers were hired back. My uncle, brother, and Dad all worked their and my uncle still does.
