The Rise and Fall of Zhentil Keep - Forgotten Realms Lore

Much confusion exists in the Realms regarding Zhentil Keep and the, not so, secret society known as the Zhentarim.
The two are so closely tied, that you may refer to one when meaning the other and still be clearly understood.
In other words, they both mean trouble.
While Manshoon has taken claim on making Zhentil Keep such a known place, I put most of the blame on Elminister. His constant battles with Manshoon has made this place almost as well known as Shadowdale.
On par with Skullport, Zhentil Keep has made a mark on the Realms and despite being constantly under attack, it always makes its way back into fashion.
This video is most likely the last history area video for a while. Faerun History now shifts focus to more detailed descriptions of culture and lore.

04:33-05:15 - To anyone interested, the son referred to here is called Iyachtu Xvim and was a half-demon. During the Time of Troubles, he found himself imprisoned within Zhentil Keep, but was later released by the followers of his father and accepted as his replacement, named "The New Darkness." A few years later, Xvim was consumed by flame, which resulted in the reincarnation of Bane himself.

Ok, first of all, I really love these videos. I've been a fan and player since '85. I have a Keep in my own homebrew campaign named "Shadow Keep". I've fashioned it from the lore of Zhentil Keep. I also, have a question. Would you be able to do a video on the realms of Vaasa? I've always been intrigued by that region and I can never really find any reliable sources or information on it.

You do AMAZING work! The only issue I spotted was you incorrectly called Chess Manshoon’s brother. Manshoon did have a brother once, but his name was Asmuth I think.

4:50 Didn't Cyric cull together this monstrous army to attack Zhentil Keep and he was going to destroy the army so that he would appear as the city's saviour but Fzoul, rather than read the Cyrinshad (A book that would make any reader or listener a devout follower of Cyric) in the town square, he read the "True Life of Cyric", which made everyone aware of Cyric's true origins and lost what faith he had gained in the city. So rather than save the city he called for the army to destroy it.

You guys should totally do a video on the time Manshoon thought it would be a GREAT idea to make a bunch of clones of himself. Spoilers: it ended very badly.

I really love the videos you're making, it's something we D&D fans need :) Also, I couldn't but notice the similarities with shoddycast's TES lore, and that is something I really appreciate, I mean they're quite pioneers of the lore videos genre as far as I know. Have you ever talked with them to try to get some feedback? They might like what you're doing here and help spread the knowledge of faerun. Anyways, you've got a new subscriber on your list :D keep up the good work and let us know if there are any other way to support these videos and future videos to come.

if you wish i will dig up my old Bane Knight priest one of the most beloved character from zentil keep 13 different players always begged me to play him and ill tell you his story its long old spanning from the time of troubles till bane was reborn

IDK much lore after 3rd edition/V 3.5.....I have the entire system memorized. No need for books while running a game. On EXTREMELY rare occasions. My point is that it's too late for me to switch editions. We have fun & that's what really matters.

Really a cood DM for that system only truly needs to memorize the Skills chapter, the Combat chapter & a few pieces of the DMG. Oh, and almost the entire MM. LoL

I'm with you. Realms ca. 1350 - 1380 DR is my jam. I've been running the same Undermountain/Waterdeep adventures since the early 1990s. I only just recently converted from 2nd to 3rd edition.

In my game Zhentil Keep never fell as the Time of Troubles never happened as Bane never "dies". Cyric is dumb and I decided the ToTs was lame af. Sometimes official canon is just not good. Long live Zhentil Keep.
