Why is the NFL playing in Germany? If you remember, the tickets for Week 9 Chiefs v. Dolphins game in Frankfurt sold out in 15mins. This was back in June when they went on sale. There were 1.4M people in the queue. How did this happen? I think we can break it down into four main reasons for this phenomena.

If you ask me, there are two main reasons for the popularity of the NFL in Germany: 1. Accessability: While most sports - including the most popular one, football (soccer) - are hidden behind a paywall, you can watch at least 3 NFL games a week live in German freeTV. Kick-off is also conveniently timed at 7 pm (local time) on sundays when most people are at home with nothing better to do than to sit on the couch and watch something on TV. 2. Too much money in football (soccer) Over the past 15-20 years, money has completely overtaken European soccer, creating a scenario in which only a handfull of "rich clubs" are realistically able to compete for trophies. The gap between the haves and have nots is also widening each year, making real suprises even less likely: FC Bayern Munich for example now won the German Bundesliga, the highest tier of German football (soccer), 11 consecutive times and 19 out of the last 25 times - You think the Patriots dynasty was boring? Try the Bundesliga! This is where the NFL comes in: the salary cap and the draft system mostly prevent the dominance of one club and shake things up once in a while, keeping things interesting.

Football It’s the sport of many names, but in terms of its worldwide identity, there is no sport to match football! The game is played by billions and watched by billions. Football has 4 billion fans. In Europe, it’s huge. In South America, it’s huge. In Africa, it's huge. In Asia, it’s huge. There are superstars on the field of play, in the managerial dug-outs, and in the TV studios. There are global competitions, controversial moments, and goals galore! World Cup excitement can border on hysteria, as the hopes of a nation are thrust onto eleven men. Simply put, there’s no sport like it!

I think you should have also mentioned RanNFL. For the last 10 years we got NFL football in free tv on one of the biggest TV broadcasters, they presented football in a very modern way with tight implementation of social media which lead to more connections between german american football fans

Another factor might be, that in germany there is not much more than soccer. You have the Bundesliga, where the saisons developed into one-sided stories, where Bayern Munich always wins the championship. And than you have the Champions League, where the winner is most propably the one with the most money. So, a lot of Germans (me included) are sick of this development. Football gave us another sport, another opportunity. Due to the Draft and the Trading-System is the game more balanced and ever exiting. A "bad" team can be a good team next season. Best example: Texans.

Thats sadly why i dont watch soccer. As an american i dont hate the game itself, i hate how its organized. No salary cap? Richest teams always win? Teams get bought out by rich saudis and are corrupted by oil money? No fun.

@@saltyaphid3195 this Sport itself could be amazing. With a draft system etc. But yes, right now- it sucks

What was not in the video: Yes, the nfl europe was popular in germany and the ELF just recently gained attraction, but for the most part it was the german football league that held up the stick for american football in germany. The GFL is an independant semi-professional league in existance since 1979. It has a rule that only to american imports can be on the field at any time so developement of domestic talent and investment in the community are key. The second factor why american football became so popular in germany is imho the "sports power vacuum" in germany right now. Handball used to be number two, but internationally german handball is losing ground to france, spain and the nordic countries. Basketball is recently gaining popularity again but only after it was on a downfall as Dirk was getting old and new talents just recently emerged. And then there is the track and field misery, where germany almost did not win a single medal at the last world championships. Most of this is soccer drying out the money and fame pool from any other sport while not beeing all that successful international either. This naturally creates opportunity for the nfl to establish as an alternative for all those fans left in limbo.

But why did the American soldiers take American football 🏈 to Germany instead of baseball ⚾ like they did in Japan?
@King_Boo_5
@King_Boo_5 8 месяцев назад
I’m pretty sure baseball was already known about in Germany due to its proxy to the United Kingdom and a lot of native Germans that immigrated to the US. Japan was pretty isolated from most of the world unlike Germany that’s been very close to the United Kingdom.

@@King_Boo_5 But people don't play baseball in the UK, they play Cricket 🏏. Baseball hasn't been able to succeed in Europe like basketball did. There are small baseball leagues in Italy and the Nederland but that's pretty much it. The only American sport that has truly conquered Europe is basketball 🏀.
