The ACC has definitely given College Basketball its fair share of greatness. From the elite squads of UNC & Duke, to the surprise teams that have come out of nowhere like Maryland in 2002, the ACC is always the conference to watch. And in the past decade, the Virginia Cavaliers have played their part in the conference’s rich history. While they have played basketball since the early 1900s, they didn’t have a lot of success and for the majority of their history, had put together some average seasons. But in 2019, the program captured its first Men’s title and has been one of the better college basketball teams since 2010. So how Virginia basketball, once a perennial loser, get to this point of being an elite program year in and year out? In today’s video, we’ll be looking at the Rise of Virginia Basketball.

It is a HUGE misrepresentation to say that UVA had a bad offense because they ranked low in PPG. When you have 10 fewer possessions per game then an average team (which is UVA's style) you will tend to score about 10 fewer points per game. Of course, they will rank low in PPG. Make no mistake, the 2018-19 team had one of _the best_ offenses in the country, ranking SECOND overall in Kenpom adjusted offense. Kenpom scores teams based on how many points they would score per 100 possessions against an average team. Here are their adjusted offensive efficiencies since 2014: 2014: 27th 2015: 21st 2016: 8th 2017: 50th 2018: 30th 2019: 2nd 2020: 234th 2021: 17th Average rank: 49th Average rank outside of 2020: 22nd That doesn't sound like a bad offense to me, outside of 2020. What makes UVA elite is they combine this with a near-always top-ranked adjusted defense (except in 2021 -- 36th... ouch)

Maryland didn't really "come out of nowhere" ... they were in the Final Four in 2001, had won the ACC several times, and are over .600 all time, as well as over 400 weeks on the AP Poll. Granted, only really 1999-2004 was Maryland ever considered a true national contender, and then glimpses again during the 2019/20 season, but Maryland was always been one of the better teams in CBB, it's just choked several times. But, you don't "come out of nowhere" to win a title when you're ranked top 5 the entire season, and coming off of a Final Four appearance

Not impressed. Oversimplified and incomplete overall, and at times grossly misleading in places. Not the least of which is the assertion that UVA’s scoring offense was typically bad during the Tony Bennett era. That’s because they had a very slow pace, which limits points to both them and their opponent. A better measure is offensive efficiency. Check Kenpom’s adjusted offensive efficiency ratings for UVA from year-to-year: 2013/14: #27 2014/15: #21 2015/16: #8 (!) 2016/17: #50 2017/18: #30 2018/19: #2 Those are mostly good-but-not-great numbers with occasional outliers. Their offensive pace may be slow, but they’re generally efficient, and their two elite top-10 rating years coincide with their deepest tournament runs. That would have been fair to point out, but you made way too sweeping a generalization. You also failed to mention that Virginia lost their best player to a broken wrist just two days before the UMBC loss-DeAndre Hunter. So that’s not a fair measure of how good they actually were that year, and winning the ACC tournament multiple times in that run is nothing to sneeze at given the competition.
