The River Road: Texas FM 170 - Presidio to Terlingua

This drive begins in the border town of Presidio, Texas, and heads east along Farm to Market Road 170, known as the River Road, as it parallels the Rio Grande River. Much of this drive passes through Big Bend Ranch State Park. Almost everything you see on the right side of the video is part of Mexico. The drive ends at Terlingua Ghost Town, just a few miles outside Big Bend National Park.

I'm considering doing this in a couple of weeks rather than drive where we are staying in Marfa to Alpine then South on 118 - the quicker route. I was not able to catch the road signs, but noticed there weren't any gas stations. Better start making a list before I go.

There is a gas station/store in Terlingua on the intersection of 118 and 170. There is lots in Presidio, Only about 70 miles or so between Presidio and Terlingua but allow at least 2 hours since the road winds around a lot and you will want to stop to take in the views. Last week I went Presidio to Terlingua. Starts out flat and ends up in the mountains.

Went there to help celebrate the life of my good friend Mark who lived there. It was a grand time to send him off….

The whole area is gorgeous! In 2017 my wife and I took a long leisurely drive through West Texas with lots of time and no itinerary. We stopped at Ft. Stockton, Marathon, Alpine, Marfa, Ft. Davis, Big Bend National park, Terlingua, Lajitas, Presidio, and a whole lot of other places. The people and places were wonderful, now I'm working hard to convince my wife to move there when we retire.

I am from New York City, I got anxiety when I travel to Texas--especially, when my TomTom GPS was telling me, the next gas station is 120 miles away!

I use to enjoy this drive quite a bit in the 1990's, its a great drive whether your going from Presidio to Terlingua, or from Terlingua to Presidio. The scenery is awesome. My favorite place along this road is the T P's there at the picnic area & the deep canyon. & being able to see the Chisos mountains from a distance. There is also an antique store when you get to Terlingua & a restaurant that I ate at 2 or 3 times. Its been 14 to 15 years since I did this drive now I'm ready to do it again. I've been to Big Bend State ranch as well, But it was back when I was under 10 years old. Which was well over 30 years ago.

Such a fun ride on a motorcycle, have been there couple of times, breathtaking beauty. Took me hours to do it, having to stop for pictures! Can't wait for May when I'll ride from Houston, taking a side trip here on the way to El Paso!

I took this drive 2wks ago. I saw this video prior to going and also scouted the road on Google maps. Its is a wonderful drI've w magnificent vistas but this video did not prepare me for what this road really holds in store. The road between 6:00 and 8:00 just before the teepees has high grades and beyond the guard rails some VERY steep and deep drop offs of hundreds of feet. Thank fully the rental car I had a 2013 Nissan Altima navigated this road with minimal effort. Thought I would share my experience. Nice video but really falls short of the actual experience. :)

SouthTexasGal830 Have you heard that Trans-Pecos Pipeline is coming to the Big Bend area? Ourcommunity is very small here. We are very concerned and want to voice our fears. Just thought you should be aware since you may plan a revisit. Please it is easy to click to help @ wh.gov/iZEoMwww.notinourbigbend.com

We are about to do a big loop visiting Texas towns on motorcycles, and will be doing this road the other direction. I thought on a map it looked cool, but this video has me pumped!

@alecos78 it's Del Dongo, "Samiscience". And the car was a Hyundai Elantra -- not quite the "mid-size" car that the rental agency promised.

Agreed. I'm changing it. It is hard to find music that is usable and that's long enough to cover the video. I'm not sure the new selection will be much better, but it's definitely less intense. :)

I am heading out there in a few weeks. With all of the "hub-bub" about border security, any safety/security issues? I am a photographer and I will likely be shooting at dusk and dawn, when it will likely be most risky.

I don't know what it's like now. In 2011 everyone was pretty laid-back about the whole thing in this area. There were border checkpoints on the main roads, and you'd see some border patrol vehicles from time to time. But at some places along the river, anyone could easily have crossed -- in fact I saw some people crossing at Boquillas Canyon. Not immigrants - just local Mexicans trying to sell some trinkets to tourists, then return home. I don't think there's a big risk, but I'd ask some people who live there before taking any chances.

I drove this last week. Completely safe as any other rural road, maybe safer due to the traffic. Most of the Mexican cartel violence along the border is located is located in the big city areas.
