i love how the high priest could tell that they weren’t gods after one scratch but they also won an impossible game by defying the laws of physics and made a volcano stop erupting (he obviously couldn’t have known it wasn’t them)
It's a good argument, but it's not just the blood. It's also the fact that they went against him, which I bet he sees as the most absurd thing of all and something that no true god would do. Even if they were really gods, the priest might still believe them to be fake just because he could never accept the fact that he wasn't right.
In the movie, magic is real. The priest, after he saw they're blood, probably thought they were powerful sorcerers but not the gods. That's why he picked such a powerful spell to defeat them.
When I was a little kid, I didn't get the politics from the priest and the chief. But here the priest is playing a clever game. If the boys win, the Chief's BEST warriors will be killed and the Chief would lose a ton of power. If they lose, the priest can prove the boys are not gods. In his mind, he would have won either way.

My wife and I just got back from our honeymoon in Cancun. We had the privilege to visit the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza. I grew up watching this movie as a kid and had no idea these ball fields actually existed in real life! The architecture was absolutely breathtaking which was one thing, but to stand in the middle and imagine 5-foot tall Mayan men compete for their lives by hitting a ball through a stone hoop 21 feet off the ground is incredible. For a kid's movie, it seems like they actually did their research, except in the real stories, I guess it was the man who scored the winning goal who was sacrificed. He would kneel in the middle of the field and get beheaded by the losing team's captain, as he himself proved that he was the only one fit enough to be sacrificed to appease the gods. His blood would soak the field and would seek to ripen the harvest for the coming season.
Actually, it isn't known for sure who was actually sacrificed. There's different theories, and the winner being the one killed is actually one of the theories. But, it's also believed it could be the losing team or captain of the losing team. Whatever version you get to hear depends on the tour guide you end up with at Chichen Itza and other sites. I did the tour at Ek Balam and my guide explained it was the winner who was sacrificed. Then at Chichen Itza my guide said it wasn't known for sure and explained the different theories. I heard other guides explaining the game to other groups and many of them confirmed that it wasn't known for sure but it seemed to fit for it to be the winner
When I visited the ruins I realized the ring was increidibly high, I always thought it was quite lower. I have no idea how someone can even manage to use their hips to shoot a ball half of that altitude
Even scarier, many Aztec games had the winners of the game be the ones who are sacrificed! Imagine that "how do you do"! "Your team just became the state champions! What are you going to do next?" "Get sacrificed!"
But even then you can't just swoop in and change up someone's culture like that...I mean we're all the product of what happens when you just walk onto someone's land and claim it as your own.

@@Albino_Wolf No, that’s Armand Assante, which I didn’t know until just now. He did an awesome job as Odysseus in a 1990s miniseries if you’ve never seen it! Branagh is the voice of Miguel.
I was the Clean-up supervisor for Tulio on this sequence among others on the film, working with the incredible William Salazar as the Animation supervisor. Some of the best animation I've had the pleasure to work on. It's lovely to see that people remember and like it. Thank you!

I don't know why, but I love the fact they showed him getting hit. It seems like it means nothing until the end of the scene and for some reason I find that as a really nice detail that does make sense for the High Priest (can't spell his name, whoops) to figure out the truth. It's cool and I love this movie.

Fun fact: the ball was made of solid rubber and weighed an upwards of ten pounds. Imagine hitting a flexible bowling ball with your hip and head and trying to aim for a hoop 20 feet off the ground, not to mention needing to wear some armor (because you didn't want to fricking die), and having a small chance of being sacrificed if you lost (and I do mean a very small chance).
If you look carefully at Tzekel-Kan when he says "all of the sacred writings say that you will devour the _wicked_ and the unrighteous" and "well as speaker for the gods, it would be my privilege... to point _them_ out", he is subtly directing his eyes toward Chief Tannabok.
Makes you wonder if Tzekel-Kan had a point about the Chief, if it turns out he was the bad guy all along and that Tzekel-Kan was truly trying to save his people, but we and the protagonists never got to discover the truth.
@@Checkmate1138well, considering that Tzekel-Kan practically sold his people out, it’s safe to say that the Chief was the good guy. Plus, thanks to Miguel and Tulio’s plan, they made sure that El Dorado would be safe forever.
Simple way to avoid the whole fiasco with the High Priest: Since it was Tulio who hit Miguel, who are both alleged 'gods', it could be passed that only the gods can harm each other and make each other bleed Easy

in the story (and maybe in real life mesoamerican mythology) the gods can't bleed at all. maybe tulio could hurt him, but it wouldn't result in blood. blood was seen as a very specifically MORTAL thing--if you lose enough of it you die of course. even in greek mythology the gods didn't have blood, they had ichor.
I liked how he handled it because he doesn't deny the _nature_ of the prophecy, he simply declares that he controls when the prophecy is applied and who it applies to.
Lol, Mayan, Aztec, Olmec. I’m just saying that it brought a little bit of culture I hadn’t previously seen into my life as a child and I really enjoyed it. I’ll have to educate myself a bit more I suppose, but thank you nonetheless.

the difference between culture/political economies and histories between northern and southern native american civilizations has always been fascinating. it had a HUGE legacy on Spanish\French and English/American colonial practices and the current make up of the hemisphere today. i wrote my comp thesis for Atlantic Worlds/Columbian Exchange on the exact topic

I like how Miguel tells Tzekel-Kan that there will be no more sacrifices after seeing him threaten to sacrifice the soldiers for losing the game. The only person I see who is wicked and unrighteous is Tzekel-Kan himself.
Wow, I'm reading about the ball game that Aztecs used to play (in my Mexican history class) and how they sacrificed the losing team as a ritual. Somehow I missed the sacrifice part in this movie. Chilling!
I certainly don't know how accurate this is, but I recall reading originally the WINNERS would be sacrificed, but they quickly realized that didn't really motivate either team to try very hard. Once it became the LOSERS who'd be put under the knife that they starting putting everything into it.
If you listen closely to the music that plays from 2:10 to 2:52 you can hear that they are basically chanting their names, Tulio and Miguel, with some occasional changes but still the same.

This is a Spanish con artist speaking to a delusional and very violent Mesoamerican high priest with confidence 2. Miguel, Tulio, and Chel are not necessarily wicked, but they are sort of unrighteous in this scenario, so what Miguel says here is a double layer quote: he’s speaking for the Mesoamericans but if you think about it, it's ironic that he says that
They're righteous in that they're very AGAINST human sacrifices. And Miguel has gotten to know a little bit more about the people in El Dorado so he's being honest when he says he hasn't met anyone as terrible as Tzekel Kan claims.

From what I can understand, The High priest has an issue with The Chief and wants to get rid of him along with any of his followers (like the ball players here) so that the High Priest can be in charge and have more power. That’s why he’s so keen on pointing him out as wicked and unrighteous at 5:20

We don't talk about the armadillo, we need to talk about him. That adorable little creature was the true mvp, literally helped Tulio and Miguel score points with almost nothing to gain and stuck with them 😢
Lesson from the movie: one of the biggest flaw of building your reign through fear is that you leave yourself wide open to liberators (or just someone that make promises of liberations). Once you let one sneak through your suppressions, you may find all your power taken away in a blink of an eye.
There was a movie that I forgot the title that showed this game. It was an animated movie about kids with spirit creatures who would go back in time to fight something or get, I don’t remember. Any clue anyone?

The martial arts nerd in me firmly convicts that, if this were not set in a Mesoamerican ball game arena, sparring with these guys in various martial arts would be exceedingly tough but ultimately rewarding because they can put up a brilliant fight, given how their sheer strength, everlasting endurance, and mighty mettle can power their strikes, grapples, takedowns, and holds. Therefore, this gives any martial artist the opportunity to test their mettle and skills on these strong warriors. It does not matter if a martial artist specialises in Karate, Wrestling, Pankration, Muay Boran, Lethwei, Bokator or Shaolin Kung Fu. If the martial artist is not properly conditioned to do sparring with these warriors, they may as well not even bother to attempt it at all. Besides, these warriors are built well like tanks and would never hesitate to throw the first punch, kick, grapple, takedown, submission hold, strike, and/or throw.

I think I like Chel's outfit a lot better with the Tube Top not too tight or loose, the Sides of the Skirt not too thick or thin, the Hairband with Chieftess Feathers, a Necklace, a Bracelet, 2 Earrings, and an Armlet.
