What I loved the most about her, she knows she’s beautiful and can manipulate the guys, specifically Tulio, she’s not a shallow bimbo. She wants to find a life outside of El Dorado. And she actually falls for Tulio, genuinely.
She's a real girl with a personality and motivation. No way can you have anyone be shamelessly sexy like her nowadays. People would lose their fucking mind and try to erase this version of her now, all while making a shitty live action reboot and pretending that was the original.
Thats the thing about what makes DreamWorks movies so good back then, because they want to include the adults to watch these movies so that they can be entertained, so they put subtle signs of what these characters are doing, such as the scene where Chel is giving my mans tulio some sloppy seconds XD these guys are geniuses.
the fact that they showed it in a movie for 6yos confirms that chel has the most insane headgame imaginable. Bro really broke through disneys cencorship😭
The hand drawn animation still looks amazing. And I have no idea how they were able to get away with making her that thicc and with that outfit. I still love the “where was she keeping them?” Line
@@susanwjoh0re735I don't think it's due to "wokeness" but this would definitely qualify more as a movie for adults these days with how blatant the sex jokes are. If I were making this movie, I'd feel like a weirdo advertising this as a movie for kids.
@@susanwjoh0re735 No, I enjoy the movie, it's not bad. It's just that I think if the movie were to be made these days, it'd be rated for older audiences.
Recently, I watched this movie for the first time. And really liked it. I love the animation. Also, I wish companies would bring back hand drawn animation. Also, Chel is very beautiful.
Ok all jokes aside she’s hella gorgeous and her personality deserves more attention. I do like her not just for her appearance but in personality, she’s smart, funny, seductive, crafty & cheeky.
@@insertnamehere2746 colonization... spain, portugal, france, england come and take land from the natives with deception and violence, force themselves into christiany and rape the girls, the process of "civilisation" of South and North America is dark, very dark.
I love that they didn't write Chel to be some basic empowered female character. They gave her a very interesting angle: she's just as much of a con artist as Miguel and Tulio and is all in on whatever scam they're planning, and can often be ten steps ahead of them when they're not seeing the bigger picture, having a double advantage in that she's a part of a culture that Miguel and Tulio aren't familiar with and thus has to often walk them through her customs. Not only that, but she's so sassy and snarky, but can share loads of sympathy for those she cares for. She's brimming with personality and she really plays off the two men very well. They have great chemistry. Yes, she's also a sex symbol (by God those hips don't lie) but in this case, it really is all what's underneath that sultry look that makes her so memorable and likeable. That and the character animation for her is just so smooth. Edit: by "basic empowered female character" I meant a woman character who is virtually flawless, never loses, and never makes mistakes. Now, when I say that I only mean a select few, a more notable example being Mulan from the 2021 Disney live-action remake. Not every strong female character is written this way, and not many are written this way neither (despite what certain alt right macho man sexist grifting troll tubers will tell you). There are several exceptions that come to my mind when I think of this trope when it's done right: Rey Skywalker (SW ST), Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law), Galadriel (LOTR: ROP) etc. Just to name a few. That's it. Just wanted to make this disclaimer.
Well said! Chel is one of the best woman characters in all of animation. In the 90s and early 2000s, Dreamworks and Disney had some great toon ladies overall.
I think another neat aspect of her character is that SHE sought a relationship and tried to woo another character; because most stories have a guy try to "get the girl." I think it gave her more depth and agency, while also breaking convention of the man making the first move, giving a freer representation of sexuality.
Yep, and what made Chel even greater is that her agenda doesn't fully align to neither of the duo, especially Tulio's, driving him crazy. And I've been thinking about her motivations, and I believe are quite simple: to enrich herself to get out of El Dorado and live her own adventures in either of the close by cities, and she wasn't interested in getting rich if she couldn't enjoy herself on it.
When movies actually wrote good female characters. Tbh that was until stuff got infected and now its all crap female characters but any compliant means you are sexist........ smh
I used to have a crush on Chel as a kid, because she's reminds me of my real life crush but got rejected many times because of how awkward I was. Now this movie finally got a lot of attraction for the memes and everyone in the internet are simping for Chel and it makes me glad about it
@@derkturtle7191 I mean, dude's got LJN as his profile picture. and if you've seen a single episode of AVGN, you know that LJN is *not* an attractive quality to have lol
@@alysssabear wow so offended already? Go back to kindergarden. It’s only “one of the greatest animations” to you, because you don’t know the time when animations like those were launched by the dozens every year. And again, you don’t put the market factor into account.
2:59 when he gives her that suggestion is so cute, and at the same time he's so shamelessly into her. The animators really sold their expressions so well. Edit: where did all these likes come from??? Thanks y'all - might we'll be my most liked RU-vid comment, and it's on a video for an excellent movie. You have my thanks.
Jesus Christ....I know this sounds wack ...but I can't get over how attractive she is ....the sassiness, the confidence, the attitude....she isn't a damsel in distress but she also isnt a political statement ...she's rich character wise, and so wonderfully an individual with all her quirks
Welllll specifically she falls under that line of the “Sexual native” that people have coined and pinned the blame on pop culture since the 40’s. Basically in order for a brown girl to be attractive, she needs to be highly sexualize, and partially nude.. Look at Disney’s pocahauntas
neither them white dudes look like either of the characters lol other than being white. but if they can act the characters though sure cant really see if though, maybe...
As someone who seen this movie a good number of times as a kid, I memorized pretty much every soundtrack. and to this day I often have movie soundtracks in my head.
What really sold the movie were the expressions, especially Chel's. And it's quite rare, especially lately, to have female eye candies to be this fleshed out and expressive.
The way this is animated is a1. How they brought the Ancient Mayans to life is so underrated. I don’t know if it’s Mayans actually but it’s rare we see that time period portrayed like this. Dream Works masterpiece along with Prince of Egypt are my all time favorite movies.
There are elements from Aztec, Maya and Inca culture alike but, in my opinion, most of it nevertheless points to the Maya, e.g. the Maya hieroglyphs, the sacred cenote (well), Xibalba, the ball game.
@@luanlopes9415 No, the movie combines elements from all pre-Columbian cultures. For example the Incas did not have a writing system or a ball game. Mayan: xibalba, ball game, glyphs, Jaguar Warrior. Inca: mountains like the Andes, throwing off a cliff.
*"Originally, the story was conceived as a dramatic film due to Katzenberg's penchant for large-scale animated films, which conflicted with the film's lighthearted elements. This version of the story had Miguel initially conceived as a raunchy Sancho Panza-like character who died, but came back to life so much that the natives assumed he was a god, as well as steamier love sequences and scanty clothing designed for Chel. However, while The Prince of Egypt was in production, Katzenberg decided that their next animated project should be a departure from its serious, adult approach, and desired for the film to be an adventure comedy. Additionally, the romance was toned down, and new clothing was designed for Chel."*
not even exaggeration is the build of certain ethnic groups women like that included it, cause theres few different builds or archtypes for certain ethnic groups. all versions look good glad he put detail into it@@NightTimeDay
Damn straight! She’s the only reason anyone even REMEMBERED this movie! Seriously! If people wanted to watch a treasure hunt film, they’d look up Indiana Jones!
