There is such a wonderful charm to this "two parts of one whole idiot" dynamic. It is almost as though they have a fixed number of brain cells shared between them and they have to properly apportion them so as to pull off a "brain blast"
The two of them always reminded me of a ying yang. Two parts of a whole, and they both needed each other in order to survive. Tulio was the eyes and brains, Miguel was the heart and soul.
What I love most is Tulio telling Miguel that the horse can’t understand human words like a human does, which feels like a jab at Disney’s smart animal trope.
And then they both abide to, and contradict that trope simultaneously by having the horse bring back not a pry bar, but something better that looks sort of like a pry bar.
That’s one of the many reasons why I love Dreamworks; they’ve been taking jabs at Disney for years. They even made an entire franchise out of a jab at them with Shrek

The Road to El Dorado is one of my favorite movies of all time. The animation and the visuals are beautifully designed, the characters are funny and give me a good time, and the story is actually not bad. Definitely an underrated masterpiece.
Of all the early Dreamworks films El Dorado was/is my fav lol the jokes you get as you get older is just hilarious and Kevin Kline/Kenneth Brannagh are really great together
HOLY SHIP is right These two should’ve totally gotten together, but instead the movie producers got scared that it will get band because of it, because let’s be honest, there is nothing straight about these two

I just read that this movie flopped because, and i quote,"the content of the film and the animation were at odds, as well; the humor and dynamics proved to be much too dry and sarcastic for children, while the hand-drawn animation was much too cartoony to attract adults, thus leaving the film to struggle to find an audience after its initial release." I never had any trouble understanding most of the humor in this movie. The fact that i understand the adult humor now only makes it fun as an adult to watch as well. Everyone loves the music, and whoever was in charge of the water scenes was ahead of their time. Its stunning throughout the whole movie. It's gotta be the same artist who did The Prince of Egpyt's water scenes. They were breathtaking in that movie. 😍
Whenever I hear Miguel say that he likes Tulio's escape plan and he ask's how they get on deck, It almost makes me wonder what it would've been like if the way their plans always went was Tulio is the one that comes up with the plans but Miguel helps by contributing to their main plans. I mean that's kinda literally what happens in this scene since Tulio hadn't completely thought their escape plan through and it's because of that Miguel had to contribute which apparently involved altivo. And Altivo may not have gotten exactly what Miguel asked him to get but the keys to the brig were definitely better than a pry bar, In other words Miguel's part of the plan may not have gone exactly like he expected it too but luckily they managed to escape regardless.
I feel like this is me handling any chaotic situation! Miguel being the careless happy child in me, 1:02 Tulio the old grumpy thinking voice inside me commenting on the happy child 2:29 ...and the horse is what people actually see of my personality. 3:00 Anyone relates? 😂
Ok, Miguel and Tulio always made me laugh but sometimes Tulio's harshly strong attitude triggers me with anxiety, and my heart had always belonged to Miguel! 😍 My 'El Dorado' OC (original character), Roslyn, is the same!
[the guard takes Tulio and Miguel to the brig, then cut to a man whistling, bringing the apples] Man: Hey, Altivo! Ah-ta-ta, not for you! You're on half rations. Orders from Cortes. [the apple drops on Miguel's shirt, then hearing Tulio banging on the wall] Miguel: So, uh, how's the... How's the escape plan coming? Tulio: All right. All right. Wait! I'm getting something. Miguel: Yeah. Tulio: [pauses, the he continues banging on the wall] Okay! Here's the plan. In the dead of night, you and I grab some provisions... Miguel: Mm-hm. Tulio: ...hijack one of those longboats, and then we row back to Spain like there's no manana! Miguel: Back to Spain, yeah? Tulio: Yeah. Miguel: In a rowboat. Tulio: You got it! Miguel: Great. Sensational. And that-that's your plan, is it? Tulio: That's pretty much it. Miguel: Well, I like it. So, how de we get on deck? Tulio: Umm. In the dead of night, you and I grab some provisions, hijack one of those longboats... Miguel: Uh, great. Tulio: Well, okay, what's your idea, smart guy? Miguel: Wh-Wh-What do you mean? Don't ask me that! You're the one with the plans. Wait, I... I have an idea. Uh, come on. Give me... Give me a boost. Hey, Altivo. [they toss the apple back and forth] Miguel: Altivo. [he tries to get the apple] Miguel: You want a nice apple? Come and get it. You have to do a trick for me first. [Altivo walks backward] Miguel: All you have to do is find a pry bar. A long piece of iron with a hooky thing at the end. Yeah? Tulio: Miguel, you're talking to a horse! Miguel: That's it, Altivo, find the pry bar. Tulio: Yes, find the pry bar. He can't understand "pry bar." He's a dumb horse. There's no way... [the keys drop in the brig] Tulio: Well, it's not a pry bar. [cut at night, with Miguel closing at the top, then Tulio puts everything on the boat, then Altivo hits Miguel] Miguel: Oh, Altivo. Oh, thank you, old boy. Listen, if we can ever return the favor... Tulio: For Pete's sake, Miguel, he's a ruthless warhorse, not a poodle. Come on, before he licks you to death. Miguel: [to Altivo] Adios. [jumps on the boat] Shh, shh. Shh. Quiet, please. Tulio: What's the matter with him? Miguel: Oh, he wants his apple. Well, give it to him before he wakes the whole ship! Tulio: Fetch! [throws the apple up, then bouncing on the sail, the wood, and the telescope, then splashing in the water, then Altivo dives in the water] Miguel: Altivo! Tulio: Miguel? Miguel! [Miguel dives in the water, then the boat lands on the water, Tulio starts yelling] Miguel: Altivo, I'm coming! Tulio: Miguel! Miguel: Just hang on! I'm right here, old boy! Tulio: Have you lost your mind? Miguel: Help is coming! Tulio: [looks at the big ship] Ho-o-ly ship! [they fall in the water, then the poke out of the water, then the crate breaks] Tulio: Loop the rope under the horse! Miguel: Yes! [takes a deep breath, then swimming around, then grabbing Tulio] Tulio: On the count of three, pull back on the rope. Miguel: What? [gasping] Tulio: Three! Miguel: Pull! [they both fall in the water, then grabbing the crate] Miguel: Tulio! Hey, it worked! [Tulio, Miguel and Altivo have finally, after much effort, all gotten into the rowboat and avoided getting run over by any of the ships] Tulio: Did any of the supplies make it? Miguel: Well, uh, yes and no. [Tulio looks; Altivo is eating the few supplies that did make it] Tulio: Ohhh, great! Miguel: Tulio. Look on the positive side. At least things can't get... [they hear a thunder clap, then it starts pouring rain] Tulio: Excuse me. We're you going to say "worse"? Miguel: No. No. Tulio: No. You're sure? Miguel: Absolutely not. I've revised the whole thing. Okay, because... Tulio: Yeah, we're at least in a rowboat. Miguel: We're in a rowboat exactly. You miss nothing.
What's up with these people that want to read "gay this" and "gay that" into every movie about a couple of men or women who are best friends? I merely got the impression Miguel and Tulio were a couple of orphans on the streets who knew each other since they were children and lived by their wits to survive like Oliver Twist.
I don’t think it has anything to do with the characters gender, I feel like it’s the dynamic the characters have. Like ppl like friends to lovers and whatever yk. It’s up to interpretation tho,, it doesn’t really matter whether or not someone agrees with ones opinion or not. One person might see them as friends while another sees them as a couple but either interpretation is fine.
It’s not about that 2 males can’t be friends… there are a lot of friendships between people of the same gender in movies and no one says anything about romance involved. But it’s not difficult to notice that these two have a strong chemistry between them and it seems they have a little bit of attraction and there’s nothing wrong with that. And also… what’s up with this kind of scenes? 1:54 there are so much touching

Believe it or not Tulio and Miguel were originally going to be a couple but the DreamWorks crew were worried that the movie would get banned for having a gay couple in it (since things were different back then), so they just made them friends. Although I really do ship the two.
