The Road to Om Koi, Day 1 - Local Market Meals + 212km of Perfect Roads in Lamphun

On the way to visit one of the districts on my all-time list of 'Places I Want to Go in Thailand,’ (called “Om Koi”), on Day 1 I ride 212km through the ChomThong, DoiTao, and Li districts.
Tons of new roads, thousands of gorgeous countryside views, riding through fruit orchards and local markets, it is such a blessing to be able to boost the spirits of a few local business owners along the way.
Although, as always, even though I do know that places like these need business right now, it is still a blessing to ME, being able to experience life with them, especially during times like these, and for this I continue to be so thankful.
Tomorrow's video will include some insanely steep mountain climbing, a visit to a village and a people group whom I know very little about, and I hope you enjoy this whole mini-series (which will be 3 videos).
Right now, as of June 14, 2020, I am planning both many more short cycling trips like this, exploring as far as I can into the local culture that surrounds me, while at the same time wondering and waiting for the day that I can get back to planning out volunteering trips to take part in local education (at local schools) as well.
Thanks SO much for joining me in this, I love to read your comments, I really, really enjoy them... so thank you for giving me your time, for sharing your own reactions to these little stories with me, and I hope these videos continue to be a blessing to you!
Thanks for watching, much love!! See you for the next one :)

Chris, wow. Amazing comment man, thank you. I did not exactly want to make the channel a "Food Channel," but as food really is such a big part of how I connect with people (just a common passion, especially in Asia where it seems that 50% of all people on this continent have food as a personal hobby :) :) :) hahah)... it just ends up containing a lot of food. And so, I am happy to see this comment! Because even without specifically trying, it still manages to let you enjoy it in this way, and therefore is successful, even where I wasn't expecting :). and thats great!! So yes, I am happy to see this comment, so cool man, thank you for writing me today!!

@@JoelsTastyRide its not just the food - its how you encounter it. When you come across a farmer and the next scene theyre showing you their land and where it grows? Thats solid. you have a great connection with people and it shows - from appreciating their culture to learning their language (and the dialects and language learning within) its great vids man. Hey Joel, You must have a lot of experience riding a bike. A beginning surely would not be able to ride for 9 hours. Did you buy your bike in Thailand? If so, how much did you pay?
@JoelsTastyRide
@JoelsTastyRide 4 года назад
Cliff that is a cool comment indeed :-) I always appreciate the Bike comments. Well, I Purchased my first bicycle six years ago, and then it took me about six months of trying to keep up with a few friends who were farther along than I was. I never gave up though, but yeah at first it was pretty pathetic. I felt like 8 km was good enough to feel proud of myself ha ha, and now honestly I would not even get on the bike if I know I’m only gonna ride 8 km. I will just take a rest day instead :-) the long Endurance rides or what I like to do though, because even professional writers don’t do something so dumb as go and ride the entire day, it is just too draining on the body’s resources. It’s basically useless for training ha ha, but it is just perfect for exploring :-) and that’s what I love!!!!
@JoelsTastyRide
@JoelsTastyRide 4 года назад
I did buy the bikes in Thailand, I have many bikes now, and I bought a few of them new, and a few of them I bought from friends. The nicest one I have is one that I bought from a friend, $1400, and it is very dear to me already, I take care of it like a living friend ha ha Ha

Hi Joel - Peace be with You! Wonderful video ... from the beginning special camera angle to the many interesting still pics, the quality is mega-professional ! Also, I really appreciate the food scenes. I so envy you being able to converse with the Thai people in the countryside while you enjoy their wonderful home cooking. The mango score was a particular win. FWIW today I bought a medium mango in a US supermarket for about $1 which is a good price as they are in-season. I'm looking forward to part 2 of this series. Yours in Christ! Ron in Ponce Inlet, Florida U.S.A.
@JoelsTastyRide
@JoelsTastyRide 4 года назад
Hi Ron I hope all is well today, I am smiling at the word make a professional, I am definitely still working but wow I really appreciate your support and praise. I think that you do know quite a bit about the food of Thailand, so I know you appreciate this, and I also can see that you have a real respect for people and how everyone should be treated equally, so yes I really do indeed appreciate all of your comments. That is awesome you were able to find some mango at the market, do you know what, thinking about the price though, we do have to remember that the proportions are what is really important, not just the straight up price. For example, I survived here for several years on a salary of $750 a month, and I actually saved money, I felt very blessed, but that is a good example, therefore I guess on roughly the same wages in the USA, I could get five mangoes for one dollar, but I only make 1/5 of the wages that I would were I to live in the US… OK that’s a long message now ha ha I know you understand this already, thanks for humoring me :-)

Hiiii!!! And wow this lady in particular, her garden was just so high quality, even though it wasn’t so large, wow again just like you said, she was happy to mention that half of the ingredients in the mortar came from her backyard. Beautiful. Have a wonderful day today, thanks for watching, cool to see your name here :-)

Hey Joel... love to see your adventures and the thai food experiences....question...how did you learn to speak thai so fluently, school?...internet?... i wish i could speak like that...
@JoelsTastyRide
@JoelsTastyRide 4 года назад
Dino, welcome!! Great question man, hey first of all thanks for the support!! I learned to speak Thai in a few different ways. I had almost no money at the time, so I wanted to find a very cheap or free way to learn the language, but I think what is most important is that I had to drive to do it in the first place. I knew it was gonna be a difficult thing to do so I kind of had a mindset to get it done that really helped push through. Of course it was very difficult at times, I was set to learn the reading and writing as well as the speaking, that made it much better in the end but at the beginning it was a lot to go through. I bought some kindergarten books from 7-Eleven, and then I bought a small notebook and I will just keep it with me wherever I went. On buses and trains anytime I would have a conversation I would ask someone to spell something for me if they would be so patient, and then I will go to the market at least once a day and just chat with all of the ladies selling vegetables and fruit to practice the basic conversation. It also made me fall in love with Thailand even more
@Dino-qi4jv
@Dino-qi4jv 4 года назад
Woaawww... I must say, just learning from kindergarden books and small chit chat, it’s amazing how you can speak like that. What is the period of time you’re talking about? Is there a good internet option to learn from? What kind of advice you recommend me for starting?

@JoelsTastyRide
@JoelsTastyRide 4 года назад
Hi Jennifer :-) well thank you very much thank you… I have always liked talking to people and now I guess the camera does make me a little bit more nervous actually, because I don’t want to pressure anyone at all, but it is making it fun to actually stop riding the bike just specifically to talk to people! The only downside I have about these long rides is, the pressure is on to finish the ride, I know that I can’t afford to stop too much… And over the years I just get into the habit of going on and on, maybe 100 km without even stopping one time. So having the camera now forces me to focus on what I really want to focus on, which is the people :-) I did stay in a tent actually ha ha I just didn’t record it, I sweated the whole night sleeping back down at low elevation. I should’ve stayed up on that mountain!!

Can you imagine how many people told me that my place was full of ghosts :-)? I did feel attacked one time, I can clearly remember it, But for the entire time I know that I was praying, and that God protects us from so many things, his power so fast Lee overwhelms things like ghosts the dangers that surround us, the seen or unseen, Have you ever prayed to God about ghosts?

Yooooo! Nyunt! Well man... cool message, I am smiling but hey, its very possible to eat (meals like this, not every day! but several days a week) and have your weight stay the same. Its simple actually! Just, in this case, simple and 'easy' are not the same thing. For example. If you wake up and drink water, have a very simple fruit shake with a spoon of pure coconut oil, then eat one handful of peanuts, do some work writing/editing and 3-4 hours later go to this restaurant and eat all the same food that I ate, come home and again do 3-4 hours work writing/editing, and then finish your day with green tea, lime juice, any flavored water you want... read a adventure story in a book and go to sleep. Thats a great day!!! And then the next day, ride your bicycle 70 miles (120km), have a HUGE bowl of oatmeal or porridge, TONS of fruit, and a GIGANTIC salad with every vegetable under the sun.... do this alternating every other day for a month. I can promise you, you will gain little to no weight at all, you might even lose weight. Ive been this "diet" which is more of just a habit by now, done it for years!

Thank you very much for taking the time to watch, and to send me a message today. Much love, be blessed

Hey Joel! Great video man. Wearing the masks really makes it relevant. Really wish Canada would catch up...then again, not too many street vendors here. The vendor you met seemed really nice - although, I do have to say, one complaint (hah) @ 11:40 you describe the sausage...tell us how good it is, but deny us seeing whats inside! My gf was telling at the screen, Joel show us the money shot! LOL! That and I didnt know what the snake beans were, as you didnt point them out? Nevertheless - again, a great video man. You're seriously making me consider taking up cycling!
@JoelsTastyRide
@JoelsTastyRide 4 года назад
Hahahah Matthew oh man OK OK… I see I did miss it then, I guess I wasn’t really even focusing on that, wow yeah it is not so hard to make a video, honestly OK it’s not hard at all, but to make a good video is very challenging indeed, especially when all of them are in the moment. I don’t stage anything so I have to think a few steps ahead, you can see that I’ve learned from Mark in this, he is basically a genius in this way… But OK thank you I have to remember little details like this, if I mention something early on in the video, I owe it to the viewer to follow up even if it’s only a few seconds…. Thanks a ton for watching Matthew big hug to both you and your girlfriend. Snake beans are just this Asian bean by the way, it’s the one that should go in SomTam (if available).

Woa, that's almost 132 miles! I'm lucky to make it up the street and back! That's a big accomplishment! I watch you and Mark eat so much food and I always wondered how you stay so trim. I guess riding a bike everywhere and doing bike rides like this is the reason! The food looks amazing, by the way.
@JoelsTastyRide
@JoelsTastyRide 4 года назад
Hi Sandra great comments today :-) so glad you are enjoying these videos :-) a big big part of the reason that I made this channel, and a big part of the reason that I include all the details is for health related reasons. So I am happy that you are making these notes today. While the cycling does help with metabolism, most of a persons weight loss or weight gain will come from what they eat. Exercise is a great thing, but I think current science puts the number somewhere around 20%. The majority of contributing factors are still 1) what you eat and 2) your genetic predisposition. So on that note, Mark and I are both lucky to have metabolisms suited for large meals however you have to know that both of us are extremely healthy eaters when we are not on camera

Hey dude how you been . Grammas mango rolls looked amazing ...and I love when you get a som tam in Thailand they always have you taste it for approval 😊.. the sound of Mortar and pestle squishing the som tam is so therapeutic . Your approaching 10K subs .. awesome 😁😊😎 . A huge milestone . Looking forward to traveling ... . I hope to make it out of Canada again ... one day . Sigh . Cheers man 🤘🥴🍺

Yo-yo yo hey man :-) always stopped when I see you leave a comment always happy to see you giving me such love on all the videos. All the time and thank you. It has indeed been a blessing, a pleasure, to be able to go back out and interact with people just on the small scale like this. As of two days ago actually Thailand is completely back to square one as far as no restrictions on any businesses or any times, no more curfew. We are still all nervous I think, and people are definitely watching for their hygiene, as we all should! But yes I think the option is now on the far horizon, as opposed to not even knowing at all when we would be able to think about doing some international trips again

You are right man it must be really getting tough indeed, I guess at first it seemed crazy, but now it’s really getting nervous tense… Man just I guess I can only encourage you in the way of saying that no matter how it looks all around, you know it, you know that of course there are people who look to you for inspiration. Keeping your same super funny self and remember that when this is all over, you will have been an inspiration to many, even many people who you don’t know, and even to many people you never will know

Hi Joel- following you in your adventures in Northern Thailand. My nephew and niece runs a paper business in Chiang Mai using elephant droppings. Company is called "the Great Elephant Poo Poo Paper Factory". aside from the great food experience we had when we visited them, we also had the opportunity to experience the the wonderful welcoming people in that area. Power on bro and keep spreading the positive vibes.
