I often find myself back to Schiller after reading Dostoevsky!

If you want to go EXTRA esoteric, you can listen to the opera 'I Masnadieri' by Verdi, one of his earlier works which is based on the Schiller play.

I love you for spreading the word about my Fritz in English. I certainly have no right to complain about the lack of German cultural knowledge, there is no doubt that the German culture is one of the most represented in the world, but I have to admit that my heart bleeds a bit when my Fritz is forgotten. His early plays "The Robbers" and "Intrigue and Love" made me a reader - or demonstrated what reading could really mean, besides entertainment. I even love his pathos heavy poems which so often seem to be written just to demonstrate that the human spirit of love and friendship can and will conquer everything even eventually hell. For the one's understanding German, here is a wonderful reading by Oskar Werner of Schillers ballad "Die Bürgschaft/The Hostage", which tells the story Damon and Pythias: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6zSOg4zB9Uo.html Older translation: www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-hostage/ More recent, more literal free verse translation: harpers.org/2007/09/schillers-the-hostage/

Thank you for the links! I'll check them out after work. Schiller is great, I've read a few of his plays and really enjoy them.

Very familiar and interested in Dostoevsky, but totally unfamiliar till now of Schiller’s work apart from the frequent generally quite mocking allusions to him where a character is ascribed as being deep down such a sentimental Romantic soul, full of deep down love of the beautiful ideal world. In light of that, interesting to hear The Robbers seems so crazy dark!

Matthew I just wanted to say that this is your best look. In terms of hair and beard I mean. I think the longer hair really suits you. Also how come there haven’t been many videos recently?

I will up you one I have seen it in the theatre in German it is electrifying and the version I saw they had gender reversal for Karl and Amalia and you realise how little Amalia has to say. This play was written by Schiller when aged 21 and the director of our version was 27 years old so the youthful energy was very present I have seen The Maid of Orleans, Intrigue and Love and Don Carlos in German as well as seeing the operas written by Verdi based on several Schiller plays. Between Goethe and Schiller, I prefer Schiller as his works are actually dramas rather than Goethe which are think-pieces.

That's awesome! And thank you for the link! I'll check it out after work. It's incredible that he wrote The Robbers at just 21 yrs old. I prefer Schiller to Goethe as well. Best regards,

Amsterdam, Atonement, or A Child in Time. Amsterdam is short. So that might be a good introduction.
