The Michael Shermer Show # 405
The pandemic response was a crucible of politics and public health-a volatile combination that produced predictably bad results. As scientific expertise became entangled with political motivations, the public-health establishment found itself mired in political encampment.
It was, as Sandro Galea argues, a crisis of liberalism: a retreat from the principles of free speech, open debate, and the pursuit of knowledge through reasoned inquiry that should inform the work of public health.
Across fifty essays, Within Reason chronicles how public health became enmeshed in the insidious social trends that accelerated under the recent pandemic. Galea challenges this intellectual drift towards intolerance and absolutism while showing how similar regressions from reason undermined social progress during earlier eras. Within Reason builds an incisive case for a return to critical, open inquiry as a guiding principle for the future public health we want-and a future we must work to protect.
Dr. Sandro Galea is a physician, epidemiologist, author and the Robert A. Knox Professor at Boston University School of Public Health. He previously held academic and leadership positions at Columbia University, the University of Michigan, and the New York Academy of Medicine. He has published more than 1000 scientific journal articles, 75 chapters, and 24 books, and his research has been featured extensively in current periodicals and newspapers. Galea holds a medical degree from the University of Toronto and graduate degrees from Harvard University and Columbia University. Dr. Galea was named one of Time magazine’s epidemiology innovators and has been listed as one of the “World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds.” He is past chair of the board of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health and past president of the Society for Epidemiologic Research and of the Interdisciplinary Association for Population Health Science. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the American Epidemiological Society. He is the author of The Contagion Next Time and Well: What We Need to Talk About When We Talk About Health. His new book is Within Reason: A Liberal Public Health for an Illiberal Time.

Started pretty good but got delusional towards the end. Edit: expected a bit more pushback from Michael being the skeptic but I guess time was running out and no one wants to end a podcast in conflict.

Did we know at what tissue temperature did SARS COV2 better infect cells ? Why ? Because at TWiV 659 at min29 virologist Christian Drosten suggest that SARS COV2 better replicate at very low tissue temperature. Theoretically higher mucouseal respiratory temperature protect against SARS COV2 infection. How can maintain higher mucouseal respiratory temperature, If thermogenesis are weakened by different causes ? Mask wearing not only stop droplets, but also maintain higher mucouseal respiratory temperature.

I'm not not any kind of champion of neoliberalism or anything, but I'm not sure it's quite proper to phrase as "the market isn't working." Well, certainly, in a way it isn't, but the phrasing often has somewhat implicit that the solution along the lines of "total nationalization," (or "socialism") when AFAIK universal healthcare in developed countries, more often isn't done through full nationalization, although some like the British NHS come close. Instead things would have significant components of public-private partnerships and different market regulations,¹ instead of complete central planning, with no room for private entrepreneurs. 1. (some of those more interested in the political-economical side of things would say that the state's market regulations are precisely why "the market isn't working," but then I believe it is suggestive of an error in the opposite direction, a "laissez faire" market approach is also unlikely to result in the best outcomes. I guess their opponents would counter-argue the USA is perhaps the best example of regulatory capture)

If "public health" isn't a lie, should we also have "public water" and "public food" and "public clothing" and "public housing" and "public jobs" and "public entertainment" and "public schools" -- oh yeah, we do have that last one and of course that causes fools to think more government controlling our lives the better.

From the start they try to group clean air, clean water and forced medication in the bucket of a “healthier environment”. Can anyone tell me which of the three doesn’t fit?

When has Shermer ever experienced free market healthcare? Not ever in the US in his lifetime, that's for sure.

Sorry, but the excuses given for why Hotez should not have debated RFK, JR are ....well, at a minimum disengenous. However illegit the studies cited by RFK, those studies are cited again and again by him. Consequently, Hotez would have been fully aware of those studies and, therefore, should have been able to cite his own studies and apply his own reasoning as to why RFK's reasoning is flawed.

No science-based reasoning or evidence on why they'll be bad. No hypothetical real mechanism, only made-up stuff, from more seemingly valid mainstream-sounding ones but still misguided, to full blown conspiracy theory crackpottery.

Experiment go on. But may be must avoid blood spread of liposoms with mRNA ? How can reduce risk of blood spread ? May be aspirate before inject technique can be learned and used, and after vaccination, injected deltoid muscle must not be used some hours ? To prevent deltoid muscle to contract, forearm can be suport like after shoulder trauma using a scarf.
