Dr. Jonathan Mark Kenoyer discusses some of the earliest trade items linking coastal, interior Indus and distant regions together. They were also important public symbols of identify, gender, wealth, status and ethnicity. This illustrated lecture covers Indus relationships with the Gulf, Mesopotamia and Central Asia and how shell ornaments may have illustrated various ideologies and roles in ancient societies. Dr. Kenoyer's expertise with shell goes back to his dissertation, so he is able to tie together new finds in the larger context of research since then in a variety of sites including the new ones like Rakigarhi in India. A comprehensive, chronological view that speaks to the innovation and sophistication of ancient societies.

Both seem to separate cultures which existed around the same time - not really Indus culture… the findings are different from what is normally found in an indus cultural site

@@ab6124 yes that could be an interesting hypothesis

At last, some scholars are combining 7000 BC and mehargarh phase 7:39 as indus culture. Earlier they were treated as two different cultures though trade, copper technologies, figurines, are similar.

Fascinating! BTW, may I ask you to consider whether 'trumpet' is the correct term for the shankh wind instruments. I would prefer horn, as a trumpet is by definition cylindrical and involves all sorts of heraldic implications (in India represented by the nafir/nagphani group), while the conch is conical like a horn or cornet. It is also more closely related to the use of horns as wind instruments like the shofar.

Thank you! As to the abandoned Bagasra workshops, would it not be the most plausible assumption that some kind of plague lead to the sealing of the houses? Unlike other catastrophes, this might keep looters away for a long time. If there were bone finds maybe it would even be still possible to diagnose such a disease.

Is there a place where one can download the slides? Im interested only for personal use in Bible study. (Especially concerning the use of purple dye, textile manufacture and the trade of other luxury goods to Mesopotamia and the Levant. I believe these technologies, along with written language, originated with the Indus Valley cultures.

The observation that the figurines wore bangles made of material not human derived indicates a finesse not seen in the mesopatamia culture of akkidians ( lay person perspective )
