“The Last Time” by The Rolling Stones
Composers: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Lyrics:
Well I told you once and I told you twice
But ya never listen to my advice
You don't try very hard to please me
With what you know it should be easy
Well this could be the last time
This could be the last time
Maybe the last time
I don't know. Oh no. Oh no
Well, I'm sorry girl but I can't stay
Feelin' like I do today
It's too much pain and too much sorrow
Guess I'll feel the same tomorrow
Well this could be the last time
This could be the last time
Maybe the last time
I don't know. Oh no. Oh no
Well I told you once and I told you twice
That someone will have to pay the price
But here's a chance to change your mind
‘Cause I'll be gone a long, long time
Well this could be the last time
This could be the last time
Maybe the last time
I don't know. Oh no. Oh no
Maybe the last time…

Incredible raw beauty. Far out, how beautiful is this to listen too. As a loving guess, this was the direction Brian was heading, pretty much signifies the period where the beautifully, innocent and young conflict began…Brian and Jimi are one of a kind…If there’s an afterlife of similarities, Brian and Jimi will now be twin brothers - makes me feel real happy that. Love this song, upsets me heaps about Brian. Selfishly for me,I know I’ve missed out on a life time of greatness in tunes. I love the Brian Jones Stones so much ❤

It was incredible to look and listen to this. Mick looks young and beautiful here. The messages I got however, showed a young man far more sophisticated than American boys of his age. LOL, I can’t imagine my High School boyfriends being able to articulate feelings on this level. I’ve always seen Mick as a rather strict and angry guy. To this day he saunters up to t the stage scowling, his hand movements like a teacher getting ready to give a student the punishment of a lifetime. Even at this young age, the Stones were an intense experience, so different from the teeny-bop sweetness of the Beatles.

After all these years, (I`m 75), I still find this song very unusual and powerful - ignoring the original meanings in the lyrics etc etc -- so unusual having this constant sequence of chords - a repeating musical question mark - resolved but instantly, questioning again. As far as the lyrics go - well if you take the them out of context - how true they have been throughout time and listening after all these years, it certainly reinforces the fact that there have been thousands of "Maybe The Last Time"s which have ended up being the last time - ever to be lost, in so many areas. Ignore this if you wish -- it may be just as well to! Otherwise, just dwell on that for a moment as this song still haunts from the sixties.

Listen to Andrew Loog Oldham's orchestal version of Last Time, Verve totally plagiarized it. The main hook of the song is Oldham's work over Jagger/Richards work Correct credits for not being sued: Music: Oldham/Jagger/Richards Lyrics: Ashcroft

@rainman3164 did you listen to the Andrew Loog Oldham's The Last Time? Bittersweet Symphony is literally that record with added lyrics, absolutely not a sample they paid for. They "constructed" a song completely based on that record. They paid for a sample in their song, but what they really did was take the record, record some vocals and extra instrumentation, and credit only themselves. Do you understand now? There was no way that the song was gonna to be only credited to Ashcroft without repercussions. The 70% of the song is merit from Oldham, over a Jagger/Richards composition.

This was THE song that hooked me on the Stones. I was only 10 when it came out, so I missed it when it was popular. My neighbor friend came to our house one afternoon in 1968, when my parents, who hated the Stones, weren't home. He had their big hits album, "High Tide and Green Grass" under his arm and said, "You gotta hear this." I had not heard "Satisfaction" either, the first cut. I liked it OK, but then this riff opened the second track, and I was hooked. Became a Stones freak, went and bought all their previous albums, and went to see them on the 1969 tour. They were GREAT, and I still think that, in their prime, they were untouchable. RIP the late, great Charlie Watts.

I agree. However, the panning of practically everything they did after "Exile" from quite a lot of critics is not justified, in my opinion. They have remained excellent for 60 years, but the early stuff is peak for sure.

Mick and the band added a little dash of Nashville with this one. That deep, big bodied acoustic guitar tone on rhythm, along with Keith's patented riff, make this one something special. Back in the early 1970s, this tune used to stream through my mind whenever I'd go for a ride on my chopper. This is true road music. This is king tone that I never left back in the 1960s.

@@yesterdayproductions1019 You're right. Jonesy created a lot of sound for the Stones which many (including me) were credited to Keith. However, as we know, Keith gave us a lot of great opening riffs for tunes by The Rolling Stones.

This was the Stones first really big hit that was all their own. Written by Jagger/Richards it went to number 1 in the UK and 10 in the US. Of course, Statisfaction was released about 6 months later and they were forever launched into superstardom. As legendary as Satisfaction is--the Last Time never gets tiring. Even though the production and sound are of that era-----that is so much of its charm even today. If Recorded 10 years later it would not be the same. I just can't explain it.

One of the late Charlie Watts's best work in the early years. And the guitar riffs will never ever be duplicated ever again (thank you Brian Jones) Me and my older brother used to drive our parents nut when playing this 45 on his record player back then. This song was ahead of it's time and broke ground for harder sounds later on. It's length was that of a typical 1970s song.

Heard this thrilling track in my school playground in 1965. I can still see Brian Jones with his Cheshire cat smile and perfect blond haircut, with Jagger leering and pouting at the TV screen. No wonder the adults were outraged. I loved it! Back then, the Stones couldn't put a foot wrong. They have almost outlasted everything and everybody. Even COVID -19 won't beat them.......

I told my mother where I was going and when I would be back. Then I said don't tell Dad til I'm gone..LOL I came home the concert and all my dad said was you ever do that again everything you own will be on the front lawn..LOL..LOL. I got into a lot of trouble but it was worth it. 😌
