The chorus blew Brian Wilson's (of the Beach Boys) mind when he first heard it driving in his car. He had to pull over to finish the rest of the song and said he realized he had heard the greatest pop song ever recorded. He spent the rest of his life trying to capture that moment.

I can so relate to Brian's car experience! Whenever I write music, I'm subconsciously chasing the feeling I had when I first heard incredible songs in the car years ago. _You remember that feeling your whole life._ Fortunately, I was able to write down most of the songs' titles if the DJ said who it was, but there were a handful of songs that "got away", that I've never heard again since. _Heart breaking!_ (this was decades before song ID apps like Shazam)... But yeah, I'm sure 'Be My Baby' has caused _many_ cars to pull over in the last 60 years! 😄🎶

@@sarahdee374 The main secret to the 'wall of sound' was actually the echo chamber used at Gold Star Studios. Designed and build by Gold Star co-owner, Dave Gold. I love all of the 'girl groups' from the 1960s! Great choice, especially since we just recently lost Ronnie S. For Female Friday you might also check out these women from the 1960s: Barbara Lewis -- Baby I'm Yours; Barbara Mason--Yes, I'm Ready; Timi Yuro--Make the World Go Away; and Astrud Gilberto with Stan Getz (1964)--Girl From Ipanema. (Stan Getz was a famous jazz saxophonist.)

This is another one of the fabulous girl groups from the early 60's. Phil Spector produced this group. He later married the lead singer Ronnie. They had some great hits including "Be My Baby", "Baby, I Love You", "(The Best Part of) Breakin' Up" & "Walking In The Rain". Sadly we just lost Ronnie but she left a great legacy of her music.

Contemporaries of The Ronettes was a group called The Crystals, also produced by Ronnie's then-husband Phil Spector. Their big hit was Da Doo Ron Ron, another iconic song from this time. Both these groups were a huge influence on everyone who followed, especially the Motown girl groups.

As a 73 year old, I am enjoying immensely watching you 2 young lovebirds react to the music I grew up with. I bought my first two 45s in 1957 - Elvis' Jailhouse Rock & Jerry Lee Lewis' Great Balls of Fire. When I moved to eastern North Carolina in 1970 from Richmond, VA, I became exposed to Country for the first time. I enjoy multiple genres and appreciate that you react to a big variety. The oldies are still my favorites and I will continue to enjoy your discovery of the top artists of my youth. Bravo to you both. keep it up.

Thanks for honoring Ronnie Spector (snd the Ronettes) with this reaction. You picked the right video. This song will live forever. This was an era before my time; I feel like they were as important culturally as they were musically. They brought a new ethnicity and female sexuality to popular American music loved by teens without being overtly trashy. The mascara and hair was a bit shocking (and influenced that generation’s fashion) but you can see they dressed and performed like ladies. The girl group era was very short lived but influential to this day.

At the beginning of my DJing career I had the immense good fortune to introduce the Ronnettes on stage at the Plaza Ballroom in Birmingham on their first tour of the UK in 1964 - they Blew Us Away, and I fell in love LOL! Lead singer Ronnie later married their producer, the infamous Phil Spector (creator of the legendary "Wall of Sound") but it did not go well - check out her autobiography "Be My Baby". Adored by The Beatles, Ronnie had a truly unique voice to which the many wonderful Ronnettes' tracks stand testament. Sadly she passed away on the 12th January 2022.

RIP Ronnie….her back up singers were her sister and cousin. Big influence on Joan Jett, Amy Winehouse, the Beatles, the Beach Boys…such a huge female pioneer. She had a troubled very abusive past with her ex- husband Phil Spector. He was eventually convicted of the murder of another woman.

She was really holding back in this performance. They did this song on television a different time and then broke into "Shout" right after it (it's on RU-vid too) and that performance of "Be My Baby" really shows off her power. Look for that one. Also, talking about legacies and influence, there are four or five women whose voices influenced everyone who came after them, you should look for those singers: Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters, Ma Rainey, Mamie Smith, and Blanche Calloway. Enjoy the journey.

You have heard that line before and also seen her perform before. She was the guest on Eddie Money's video for "Take Me Home Tonight". The line in his song says "Just like Ronnie says, 'Be my little baby'", and she sings the "be my baby part as well as being in the video, though she's quite a bit older than here. So this is the first time for listening to the Ronnettes, but not to Ronnie Spector.

Of all your videos you only have two 60's girl groups? There are so many to chose from... the Shangri La's, Dixie Cups, Ronnettes, Martha and the Vandellas, Shirelles. Angels, Crystals, and yes the Supremes...treat yourself to the Shirelles "Will you still love me Tomorrow" as a start. It's funny watching you react to music from my youth before auto tune with real talent.

What a fantastic song! The Ronnettes had several other influential songs worth checking out like Baby I Love You and Walking in the Rain. Some other killer girl groups from that period are The Dixie Cups with Iko Iko and Chapel of Love. The Shirelles with Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow (Amy Winehouse did a version of this one), Baby It's You, Dedicated To the One I Love, Mama Said and Soldier Boy. And of course there is the Supremes.

They were asking for other girl groups from the same time as the Ronettes, the '60s, so that would NOT include The GoGo's, The Dixie Chicks, The Pointer Sisters, Sister Sledge or the The Boswell Sisters, and the McGuire Sisters. Those groups came before and AFTER the '60s. The MARVELETTES ("PLEASE MR. POSTMAN" which the BEATLES covered) was another one from the '60s.
