Hey. This 65 year old lady is obsessed with The Rose! I introduced my kids to them. They are incredibly talented. This is the kind of music I listened to when I was in my 20s. I even saw them live in NYC. Don’t feel old. 😂 I am not dead yet!!!
Their most recent album Dual is entirely in English, but earlier releases mix English and Korean in really interesting ways. What I noticed when I first heard them is that they didn't just throw in the occasional English word or phrase to be cool, but actually mixed the languages, as bilingual people often do amongst themselves. Woosung grew up near LA and Dojoon lived in New Zealand for 5 years, so they're both completely bilingual. Jaehyeong and Hajoon also speak English really well.
I have noticed that since they left their old agency and formed their own agency most of their songs have been in English. Most if not all the songs on their Heal album were also in English.
When I went to see them in Utah in October I went to their pop up store the day before to buy my Rosebeam (light stick). The line was around the block and it was pouring rain so I had this song stuck in my head the whole time waiting in line. I enjoyed the irony, even if I forgot to bring an umbrella.
The Rose has a really diverse range of genres and their fans also have a wide age range. This was on their setlist, so you definitely heard it live. Along with Sorry they are almost always in their setlist unless its a guest appearance of 1-2 songs. All the band members can speak English, but Woosung being from LA and Dojoon living in New Zealand makes them the most fluent. In terms of vocals, Woosung's voice is naturally raspy even when he talks and since he doesn't have any formal training (and even didn't listen to vocal coaches when he was under a Korean label) he sounds the same when speaking or singing. Dojoon's voice is much brighter tone and stable with less compression. In general, Dojoon has reach higher notes with mixed voice (a mix of chest voice and falsetto) where as Woosung mostly flips into falsetto for his high notes, which is why he it is more airy and soft.
