The Rosenhan experiment: On being sane in insane places.

The Rosenhan experiment: On being sane in insane places. Prof Rosenhan’s work appeared to show that psychiatric diagnoses could lack rigour, and that even when an individual’s behaviour was ‘normal’, a previous diagnosis could skew how this ‘normal’ behaviour was interpreted.
However, were the claimed experiences of his pseudo patients entirely accurate?
And even if they weren’t, does the psychiatric community and the world of mental health in general, still owe him a debt of gratitude for the cataclysmic amount of self reflection that his published work caused.

I was accused of hearing voices by a psychiatrist when referring to conversations that I had overheard. It's a real thing that happens and I was put on antipsychotics that nearly ruined my life.

I am so very sorry to hear that. As you say, it is definitely a real thing, and the consequences can be grim.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate that. I have only put any proper consistent effort into YT for about three months or so. I presumed that gaining visibility would be difficult because of the algorithms. And that no doubt is to a degree at least, true, however I’m happy to have some views and comments - and I’m not chasing the numbers or producing sensationalist stuff, just to get those numbers. Steady interest by good people such as yourself, in some hopefully informative topics, is very much a reward for me.

Wow, I did not hear of that experiment before. As someone with severe menatl healt issues and several diagnoses, someone at the same time being ver interested about the knowledge about mental healt of the troubles thereof, and with a history of being a patient in psych wards myself, I found this very intriguing and thought-provoking. I've experienced both, feeling a diagnosis is helpful, and being "reduced" to it. Really complex topic. About Rosenhan truthfulness, that's a hard one. I'm not sure, but I can definitely see that he might have blown up real findings to a certain degree. But if so, it definitely seems that he did it with good intetion. Namely because at the time he lived, a critique on the inhuman treatments behind psychiatry walls was more than valid. Practices needed to change. So this could be a case of bad scientific ethics coming from a well meaning position. Does not excuse manipulating research (and can mess with the trust in researches and their authors in general), but would be very human. Thank you for this video. (And also, realizing the algorithm seems to work well in this case, suggesting this video to me. Unsure on whether that's a good or a bad ting)

Thank you very much for your very thoughtful and insightful observations. Yes I agree, it’s a complex topic, and at this point I don’t think we know what really went on with Rosenhan’s experiment, but I’m certain that several people over the years have been misdiagnosed and categorised. And I also think Rosenhan makes an important point about the context within which we observe certain behaviours and that once labelled, it can be difficult to shake the label. And I too think that what he did was unethical, and yet what he highlighted were behaviours which were themselves unethical. To reiterate again what you said, it’s complex. I do however think that the introspection by the psychiatric profession that his published work caused, had done a lot of good.

@@YouLeadingYou absolutely. Sometimes the need to second guess longtime established and practiced ways only seems to arise by some amount of "shock". Also, for those who like to challenge things like that through fiction, (those who don't feel free to ignore) I can highly recommend the manga/anime series "Made in Abyss". It has a character named Bondrewd who is extremely complex in that field. Tremendously well written in my opinion namely by tackling the question of ethics in science ina contect of "for greater good". Hard to put quick words on it, but he really makes you think.

@@mangantasy289 Yes exactly! Sometimes it needs ‘shock’ to snap people out of their trance. Thanks for letting me know about the Anime reference! I’ll take a note! And using fiction/allegory to question and challenge our thinking can be extremely powerful! It’s one way to get around inherent biases!
