The Royals can’t wear this… ǀ 10 rules all royal family members need to follow ǀ Justine Leconte

The members of the British royal family need to follow certain rules when getting dressed to appear in public. The royal fashion etiquette is strict: there are rules the royals have to follow because they are old traditions… while there are other style rules that are rather based on the queen’s personal preference. In this video, I discuss 10 rules the royal family follows, as well as the exceptions to the rules! I have research this topic but I am not an expert of the royal etiquette, so feel free to complete my points if you know more! Studying the codes of fashion in royal families is almost like studying fashion history. There is so much to learn there.
Thumbs up if you liked this video :-)

It took me far too long scrolling through the comments to find this. I was thinking the same exact thing, and was really expecting this to be like the top comment. Justine, it really helps when you add the pictures of what you're talking about. It would really boost the quality of the information in the video, lend credibility that you can reference the pictures, and by far the most impactful reason, because the visual examples often resonate more than a mere description of them.

Nancy Hemati Have you watched the show "The Crown"? The costume director did a fabulous job. I love the difference they showed between the queen's wardrobe and her sister's, Ann. The queen always wore a dress, sometimes with a cardigan... where Ann wore the latest fashions of the day! In a way, this series is documenting the queens fashion! PS Although, if Justine did a video on the queen's fashion... it would be fantastic!

@@brookes4802 Security don't need to spot the queen, they need to spot people around her. When they put snipers on a roof to protect politicians, the snipers check the public, not the celebrity. That's what bodyguards are for. And they are always nearby so no need to be able to spot her. Besides, she will never be mixed in the crowd and hard to spot for them.

I never paid much attention to 'royal fashion ' until Diana married Charles. Because her style bordered on rebel, IMO, following her was great fun! She was classy, elegant and always made me wonder what does the queen think about THAT outfit! It's no surprise that the royal family always look impeccably dressed considering their budget (endless) and consultants at every step of the way. What a life.....👑

Not having to worry about money and having all the things and all the people is cool, but being able to walk down to the farmers market and buy a couple of things is cool too, they loose out on a lot, but they do gain a lot (same with any celebrity really). I'm an introvert so privacy and being able to unwind is important to me.

For the most part I love how the British royals dress. The one thing I can’t support though is the shorts on little boys. To my American mind, that’s more casual than pants. But Prince George sure is cute!

When I was in the 5th grade (1969), I started and carried through a successful petition at my elementary school to allow us girls to wear trousers between November 15th and March 15th. I suppose being the teacher's and principal's pet (I never broke any rules) helped. I spoke to the principal, presented our petition, he brought it to the school board meeting, and the rules were changed to our liking. I think of that whenever I see a young British boy freezing in shorts in the winter.
@geriroush8004
@geriroush8004 6 лет назад
in Chicago, we were allowed to wear pants under our dresses, but had to remove them in the coat room (mid 60s) I think it is much milder in Great Britain in the winter, and I don't see how it is worse for Prince George to wear shorts, than Princess Charlotte in her dress.

I live in Canada and went to a highschool that required skirts. No pants around. You could wear tights, but that's all you had as an option. Most wore sweatpants over top until they got to school. It really wasn't that bad.

Very interesting rule set, and how much of it set by the Queen's personal preferences. I'd love to see a video from you about the Queen's style as it has evolved from when she was a young girl and dressed as her mother chose to the time where her own preferences took precedence. Thanks for this.

YES to a video about the Queen's style evolution! This video was so fascinating to watch. I guess the rule that really bothers me by far the most is the little boys not being able to wear pants in cold weather. Every royal mother must worry about her small child being freezing cold!

I wouldn’t mind following the Royal family dress code actually. Except for no black, I love wearing black. These days it feels as if everyone is expected to look camera-ready since so many people are taking pictures everywhere. I showed up at a private outdoor event and within two minutes there was someone pointing a camera at my partner and I as they asked us to introduce ourselves... Despite being dressed and groomed presentably, it would have been nice to have been asked permission first, but it’s not always possible to expect such a courtesy.

An interesting tip I read is that the queen has the weight cord normally used for net curtains sewn into to the hem of skirts so they don't ever fly up in high wind. Also Princess Ann is reported to have a small piece of velcro inside hats so they grip her hair & don't come off - that sounds rather painful when you want to remove the hat!

That same idea is present in Chanel jacket's hems, only slightly different to keep the good shape ☺ Not sure about the velcro on hat. I wear hats and the small ones are easily secured with bobby pins, they never flew away when I did that, maybe she wants to be extra sure 😊

Congratulations on reaching 400k Justine! It has been a pleasure to have been on this journey with you! I just read an article that said since Harry is so far down in the list for King, Megan does not have to follow the fashion rules as closely as Kate. Like at Wimbledon, she wore pants and a gorgeous Ralph Lauren blouse. There are mixed reviews on her appearance... but I LOVED her look. So fresh and pretty. The only thing I would have done is have the trousers hemmed. Although, I believe she was on trend with extra long and wide pants. I honestly liked her look better than Kates for the tennis match! I liked it when Prince George wore exclusively shorts. It seems that he graduated to trousers after his 6th birthday, as you could see him wearing them at Christmas last year, and has since. I actually think shorts are more practical for children. They have more growing room, are more flexible for play, and there are no knees to tear. For cooler weather, a child can easily wear thick knee socks or tights underneath (which are still more flexible than trousers). I also think shorter skirts are better for children. Long ones can be tripped over in play, while knee length or shorter skirts allow for easy movement.

I would go bunkers if I had to wear only 2 nail polish colours for the rest of my life - cause life's too short not to paint your nails every colour of the rainbow!! It's nice that they have specific traditions as it brings class, charm and modesty. I wouldn't want the whole world looking at me every time I stepped out of my house though. It definitely comes with a price when marrying into the Royal Family. Awesome video and yes to making a video about the Queen's style evolution! :)

I'm not so sure about the skirt length rule anymore b/c I see Kate in dresses that end at or above the knees all the time now! I also really like how Meghan wore trousers more (although that seems to be phasing out). I see Queen Laetitia wear trousers quite frequently so I think the Brits should really relax these rules a lot more.

a very interesting topic! i think these rules of dressing are all-times classic, dictated by good taste and common sense. their clothes will always be elegant and classy. i believe that quickly changing fashion trends (torn jeans for example) are always better worn on young girls, but for adults on special occasions (celebrations etc.), it's more chic to be dressed in a more elegant way.

Totally agree. Every photo of the royal family can be looked back upon decades later and still look classic (except Lady Diana's wedding dress)

Great video! I'm so fascinated by the royals and I had not heard most of these rules. Also pleased to have an excuse for always keeping my finger nails plain... I just don't like the fuss of keeping them polished but now I can say I'm doing the royal thing! 😂

This was so interesting. I (unashamedly) love the royals, so I'd heard a few of these before, but I wasn't aware of the Queen's distaste for wedges! I'm glad to know Kate hasn't let that stop her wearing them, though. I also wasn't aware of the no-pants rule - in fact, just this morning I saw a photo of Meghan wearing pants at the tennis, I believe? They were quite wide-legged so they weren't revealing in any way, but they were still pants. I'm very keen to see how Meghan adapts to the fashion rules of her new status, but I'm possibly more interested in how their fashion and style might change when the Queen passes away - I don't think there'll be much change with Charles and Camilla, but in the generations after them, I think it's likely there'll be some loosening of the rules that stem purely from the Queen's preferences. On the video of the Queen's style evolution: I would love to see that. I would also be interested to know if there are any significant differences in style rules between royal families in the UK versus the rest of Europe - they're all basically related to each other anyway, but I wonder if they have any style and fashion quirks they have to stick to.

Pants persay are not an issue as long as they are not too revealing and look presentable and professional (Meghan pants were fine except for the length which was too long), both the Queen and other royal females are seen wearing pants over the years. The DoC has worn pants for royal engagements multiple times, though mostly for sport related ones. As for rules changing, or loosening, I don't think much change will happen for those who are working royals. The DoC, fashion while modern tends to be on the more professional conservative side of fashion. I think this day and age it's less about personal taste and more about looking professional. I keep saying, royal engagements are the office of the royals, their outfit choice for each event needs to not only fit the event but look professional, statespersonship. I think cuts of clothes, embellishments and even colors can change, but certain things much remain the same. If you are representing a country you much dress a bit more conservative and appropriately for the event (for example not bearing your shoulders during a daytime state event- looking at you Meghan)

I find these very fascinating... having said that, I do find that some of them are quite outdated and ridiculous! Like not having bare legs. This was a rule when I lived in Japan; I was told that women had to always "cover" their legs when working in an office. With summer temperatures in the high 30s (Celsius) and minimal air cond in summer in offices in Japan, I did not think that it was practical. I can understand the skirt level and neckline requirements; shorter skirts make it harder to get out a car and "accidents" can happen to reveal undies etc. I hope that some of these rules are relaxed when the next royal takes over the queen because I think they seem like a rule from last century. Believe me; I lived in Japan where women preferred wearing skirts more than trousers even in winter. It would make a lot of sense if the heating in houses matched the weather but it was often freezing in houses in Japan (since they don't have central heating)....
