Ninh explains - The Rules of Ten Pin Bowling. A lot of people asked for this one, even though I was sure that everyone knew the rules of this sport already. And before anyone asks, I will not be doing a video on Candlepin bowling, Duckpin Bowling, 9 Pin bowling (or any variant thereof), Lawn Bowls, Crown Green Bowling, Flat Green Bowling, Petanque, Boules, Bocce or any other variation of bowling for that matter. It’s just not worth the time compared to the amount of views I’m getting.

Need more practice dude. If you can string together a few spares (which is easily doable) that'll take you over the 100 mark. My best ever score was 236, with a run of 6 strikes in a row. Totally messed up the last frame though.

1. It will always amaze me how professional bowlers are able to make that curve. 2. I came here mainly to see how strikes and spares are calculated. I never could figure it out.
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 6 лет назад
Hi Nicholas. 1) It's actually quite simple. If you watch carefully, they spin the ball like a bullet (or an American Football spiral). When the oil runs dry, the ball 'grabs' onto the dry part of the lane and the ball starts to change direction. It'll take you a while to develop this yourself, but once you get the knack of it, you never forget how to do it! 2) Yes, isn't it easy if someone explains it to you?! Thanks for stopping by.
@benoitblanchard1576
@benoitblanchard1576 6 лет назад
Another way to explain it: 1. If you get a spare, the first ball of your next frame counts double. 2. If you get a strike, both balls of your next frame count double. If your next frame is also a strike, it counts double but the first ball of the subsequent frame counts triple, while the second ball counts double. 3. If you get a spare or a strike on Frame 10, since there is no next frame you get extra shots (1 for a spare, 2 for a strike) but they count single. On consecutive strikes on Frames 9 and 10, your first extra shot counts double. I know this is not the "kosher" way of computing scores frame by frame, but when it comes to computing the final score this method arrives at the same result.
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 6 лет назад
Benoit Blanchard - I preferred my explanation. Way simpler to explain to a complete beginner. But yes, it arrives at the same result.

I always thought the spares and Strikes were calculated with the previous one or two frames.

If you get the ball drilled to your fingertips (not house ball) the ball will spin pretty much on it's own.

This is very helpful. I like that the PBA put blue die in the oil. It makes it more enjoyable. I general I wish more people knew the rules to bowling. I think it would make it more enjoyable to play, since most people don't know what is going on when they play bowling.
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 6 лет назад
Hey Danny K! Yeah, I was really impressed with the blue dye added to the PBA telecasts. It really shows how the oil dries up even over the course of a few games, and how bowlers make the adjustments. I have to agree with you on the rules. A lot of people go to a lane, have no idea what the scoring is or even where to bowl the ball on a lane. Shame really ... if only they knew?!

Awesome video. I think part of bowling's appeal in the world is the fact that anyone can play, and most players have a relaxed look when they play. Great vid, Ninh. Did you know there's also a Canadian variant called 5-pin, and a variety in the US New England States named Candlepin bowling? It'd be nice to do videos of those two variants of bowling. Cheers! :D

Thanks for your informative video of scoring methods and other things in ten pin bowling. However, nowadays, Weber Cup has been required to introduce a new scoring method (Alternative Method) (i) The Open Frame is the same as the method described in the video, while the spare and the strike is different. (ii) If you get a strike, you will directly get 30 marks directly (Therefore the 10th Frame no longer has 3 balls) (iii) If you get a spare, you will get 10 marks plus the first shot marks (For example 9 /=19 Marks)

Overall, very informative. However, i find it funny that you omitted the baker format, despite using a considerable amount of footage from the Dallas Strikers’ 300 game, which was bowled using Baker format. In a Baker game, you have five bowlers, who all bowl two frames, frames apart. For example, one person might bowl frames 1 and 6, or 2 and 7. It is more common than doubles, and, you almost never see games of three or four by comparison.
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 6 лет назад
I appreciate that. I know what it is, but I didn't want to confuse a complete beginner of that by being overly detailed on format. I'd rather they know how the game is scored! Thanks for the suggestion, much appreciated.

Thank you for putting this together. I am bowling in my first league game in a few hours..I'm going to be a 'fill in' for a player that's missing tonight. What I'd like to see is a video that goes over the actual rules a player follows..like how lanes are alternated with teams, etiquette, rules on the balls, shoes, handicaps, etc. Online I'm having a hard time finding all this stuff. I bowl regularly every Friday for fun with the wife and I'm pretty decent (about a 190-200 average most nights). But with a well oiled lane compared to what I'm used to (random, low or high oil content) it may prove to be difficult to adjust in just a game or two.
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 4 года назад
Thanks. Obviously this is a beginners video to teach the rules on how to play the sport to a complete beginner who doesn't know what it is. Procedural stuff like how lanes are altered vary wildly between leagues and countries, and does not form part of the rules on how to actually play the game. I suggest just asking around your local league ... everyone has to start somewhere.

So in a public bowling alley is there oil on the lanes or do they only have it in professional bowling?
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 6 лет назад
Hi Gabriel. Yes, every lane is oiled - but most of the time you can't see it. The PBA decided to add blue dye to it's oil so that you can see it on TV (as in the video), but generally the oil is clear. And each lane is oiled differently, so you might want to check with your local bowling alley what sort of oil pattern they use. Hope that helps?
@MrsTrggo

All lanes have oiled,but PBA have published official patterns to make the games more consistent, without the lane advantages.

You did forget to mention the 5 player team version called Baker, where 5 players rotate every frame (bowler A bowls frames 1/6, B 2/7, etc. to E, or the anchor, bowls 5/10). Brings a whole new level of difficulty in to the sport.

To calculate the value of a frame with a spare in it, add ten points to the immediate throw's pinfall value that follows then add that sum to the value of the previous frame. If a spare is followed by a strike, it's worth 20 points. To calculate the value of a frame with a strike in it, add ten points to the pinfall value of the immediate combined two throws that follow then add that sum to the value of the previous frame . A strike can be worth up to 30 points if two consecutive strikes follow. If a strike is followed by a spare (two combined throws in the following two-box frame) or (if a strike in the first box of the 10th frame is followed by by two throws combining to make a spare in the second and third boxes of the 10th frame) it is worth 20 points. Remember: strike = 10 + next two throws spare = 10 + next one throw Question How does a foot fault or fowl affect a bowling score according to bowling rules?
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 4 года назад
I preferred my explanation better. Foot foul - you score zero for that throw (but it counts to the score), pins are reset to previous positions.

@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 6 лет назад
Generally, the lanes in the same building will be oiled exactly the same - a general house pattern that makes it easy to hook the ball. There are a few buildings that will oil individual lanes differently, but these are the ones that cater to pro bowlers. Not the typical ones that you and I go to.
@michaelrabich9635

Leagues isn't a rule on how to play the game, although having said that, it's an interesting side note for sure.

Is there a group that enforces bowling rules? Any wiggle room to reprogram the computers to play and score it differently?
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 5 лет назад
I'm not sure about that. The current scoring system is widely accepted, so any changes to that are probably unlikely.

The one thing you didn't mention is that the PBA uses 2 lanes instead of 1.
@NinhLyUK

I could have mentioned a lot of other things. But this isn't a video that explains the nuances of different leagues. This is a video that explains the rules of Ten Pin bowling as a whole - that someone plays at their local bowling alley.

Slight correction. Yes with the scoring you get two chances to knock down as many pins as you can in a single frame, except for the last frame depending on how well you score in that frame. For example if you either get a strike or a spare in that frame , you either get two more throws in the case of a strike or one more throw in the case of a spare.

Wrong. The bowling lane is longer than 60 feet. 60 feet is the distance from the foul line to the center of the head pin. The actual length is closer to 63 feet (62 ft 10 & 3/16 in). Source: bowl.com/uploadedFiles/Equipment_Specs/Information/2012FebESManualWEBINTERACTIVE.pdf, page 27

Are there any rules against throwing a bowling ball like you do a baseball?
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 6 лет назад
I don't think so ... but I'm fairly sure you'l break your arm way before the ball crosses the foul line. These things are huge and weigh 16 lbs. Trying to pitch a bowling ball is a seriously bad idea.

@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 6 лет назад
Whilst a high rev rate is advantageous to knock down pins (i.e. Jason Belmonte) players with a lower rev rate can score just as well. If you really want an eye opener - check out the 'helicopter spinner' technique as used by Asian Bowlers.

Another thing you should mention is how professional bowling balls differ from the ones you find at your local center. Rental bowling balls, known as house balls, are made of plastic with a round core, and they don't really hook at all. Not compared to professional-grade balls. Professional-grade balls have their outer shells made of something called "reactive resin" or "urethane" (urethane is better for playing the outside parts of lanes). These substances have been scientifically engineered to increase the bowling ball's traction on the lane, but the thing is, every formula is different depending on the ball, because of skill levels. There are also weight cores in various designs that distribute the weight unevenly to help the ball curve more. This article should show you some different weight core designs: www.popsci.com/story/technology/bowling-ball-insides-photos/
