Michael Steele singing leade in a photo slide show. To bad the movie wasn't more truthful. Or did Michael have more class than Kim Fowley could handle....
I didn't know she was a member of The Runaways? Micki can be proud to have been a part of 2 groundbreaking, revolutionary bands that opened the doors for women in rock.
She was also a member of the Go Gos (the two sisters in the Bangles were also in the Go Gos). I think she played with many groups, sometimes as a guest. She was well known for her professionalism, hard work, humility and musicanship. She sings in the Bangles (all the members do actually, but in recordings the drummer was left out and Micki wasn't promoted in a single because the producers are all dumb shits).
@@alen7480 It wasn't just producers. Respectfully... So many rewrite history in all these comment sections that they're all beautiful and talented. But back then "Susanna is the hot one" and the only one boys talked about. Back then that's how entertainment producers catered mainstream stuff... how will boys and men of various age groups like it.
@@C.Church Not true, Susanna was promoted from the beginning. Songs were she was the main singer were pushed forward, even though they all sang on various songs. They even wanted to rerecord the songs to only feature Susanna. So I don't buy that.
Micki Steele is a very fine singer, and an accomplished musician as well as being a very lovely young lady.May God kindly bless her,and keep the dear girl healthy.Geh mit Gott, meine schoen Michael(Ger.)]-Go with God,my beautiful Michael;from Mr.Derlin Gerard Clair,of Slidell,Louisiana,a nortthern surburb of New Orleans. I hope that one day she will return even if it is not with The Bangles. Although I think maybe she found what she was looking for, and she doesn't feel the need / desire to return.
tryithere no, Joan and Sandy decided to search for another girl since micki was already 19 and it wouldn’t make sense to “runaway” when you’re already an adult
@@matteobarsanti8139 , OMG! underage and rebel is just badass? Sue sung it when she's 30 years old. The manager/producer you have to blame...if you think it's not the right way to sing. Sue have a tremendous sex appeal. Her voice & eyes is so magnetic & penetrating. So they make the hit video. I was very young when I first listen to Eternal Flame. It's was marvelous voice & singing by the beautiful, talented & intelligent Sue.
@Taranau, You're mistaken on who was in the band first. Kim Fowley first recruited Sandy, who already knew Joan. Not sure who recommended Michael, but she was one of the original 3 members. As well as being the original lead singer & bass player. Then Lita & Cherrie came in, When the song 'Cherry Bomb' was written. Then shortly there after, on her 2nd attempt, Vickie Fox was brought in to play bass. And Micki was fired from the band. According to Cowley, she was too old. As she had just turned 20 that July, & everyone else was 15 - 16. Joan was also had infamously said, "You can't be a Runaway, & be of age( meaning 18+). It defeats the meaning of being a Runaway if you are of age." Michael had stated she was fired for 2 reasons. 1. She wouldn't give Fowley the time of day. aka she wouldn't lower herself to have sex with his old ass. As he kept hurting on her. 2. She absolutely HATED the song 'Cherry Bomb'. She thought the song was stupid. Interestingly enough, that became the song they are most known for doing. My personal opinion is Micki had ( and still does have) more class in her pinky finger, that Fowley & others in management knew what to do with, & could handle. As well as having more class in her pinky finger than Fowley & the others in management have ever had in their entire bodies over the course of their entire lives. I'm surprised she never broke her bass over Fowley's head. But, then again, she probably figured he was not worth having to buy a new bass over if she broke it over his worthless ass.
MS sounds quite pouty as a teenager, which is just fine. Must add, months after original posting, Micki here sounds like a different person than the Michael who serenaded us with "September Gurlz". Maybe she 'found her voice' in the Interregnum.
Sandy West was also the only one of the Runaways to ever acknowledge that Micki was there at the start of the band in an interview. Not sure if the interview was part of the documentary on the Runaways, & then edited out or not. But unlike Joan, Sang said the band was first formed with Joan, herself, "& one other girl, Micki Steele." I'm glad that Micki went on to bigger, & better bands. She was in many other band's for short periods of time. But, some of the highlights were probably Elton Duck. Too bad Sony-Arista records screwed then over in 1980. Toni & the Movers, & Naddia Kappiche. Both in which she played with Toni Childs in 1981. Snakefinger briefly in, I want to say early 1983. Before joining the Bangles in 1983.
Great Upload! The band would have been a lot better if Michael had stayed with the group. Although they were only together for a short period, they went through more bassists than Metalica. I think Joan Jett sang the third song, "Yesterday's Kids."
@@joyk2327 They haven't had any bass players after Michael. None of them have been members of the band. I believe they are playing with their original bass player Annette at the moment.
I'm not sure exactly how the band got assembled, but the impression I'd gotten from my four days of hanging with them as they rehearsed to play live gigs at the Troubadour and the Whiskey, was that similarly to the movie,Joan and Sandy were the first two Runaways and Kim asked Rodney Bingenheimer for a bassist for the band---because he knew Joan wouldn't(quite obviously)play both bass and lead. Lita was also there at the time. Was better at lead than Joan. And Micki was the singer.
Actually, Kim Fowley was trolling under 21 clubs, looking for girls who could play instruments, to be in a band he was forming. Which we all came to know as The Runaways. Sandy was the first member to join. Then Joan walked up to Fowley at a club & told him, "I play guitar". Finally Micki was recruited to play bass & do vocals. So they (Sandy, Joan, & Micki) are the original, founding members. They're the ones who are on this demo recording.
That was weird. The bass part was just some amalgamation of all the bass players as they went through three. One that Fowley tried to have sex with another that accused him of rape. Maybe that’s why that part was not written about.
Only knew them for those four days.Have no idea why Micki didn't go out on tour with them(necessitating the arrival of Cherrie),but Kim did seem to make her uncomfortable. After having seen Edgeplay,it looks to me like Kim would have been the least of her problems, what with those other men being in charge of the tour itself.Seeing things only getting worse than him probably made her bow out... Strangely enough, while I was a mailman,I met Kim,again. Same yellow suit. Same slimey demeanor.
Both the histories of the Runaways and the Bangles have shown me, that it was "the men" that screwed everything up. Both bands would have been much better of without them...In my opinion anyway...
That's unfair. Do you have the nerve to tell that to all the technicians, additional musicians & cover art makers listed on the Runaways album credits who made the their music a realization?
@Taranau, Vicki Patterson is the one who started the Bangles. But yes, in the 2nd it was the management who messed everything up, with the record execs approval, by pushing Susanna out in front of the rest of the band. The record execs released only 2 songs that were not sung by Susanna. They were sung by Debbie. The other 6 songs, released were sung by Susanna. Would have been nice to have heard one of Michael's, or one of Vicki's songs.
@@darthglowball She meant the managment, and yes, the Runaways pretty much had all their revenue taken from them and were being overworked and exploited. In fact it was a 15 year old girl that started and managed the group before Kim Fowly came along. And he didn't do much except steal from them and screw them over in contracts. The girl had to do the bookings etc and admitted it was because she was underage that kept her from doing the contracts themselves. A different kind of screwjob happened in the Bangles, with the drummer not allowed to sing on recordings (orginally and on stage, they all took turns singing). Also, Suzanna Hoffs was heavily promoted but none of Micki Steele's excellent songs were promoted, mostly because she didn't play the game and often spoke her mind.
@@alen7480 yes I've heard that they were overworked and kept broke because Fowley was money hungry from the Huffingtonpost article "The Lost Girls" and from some musician with a comment on some interview video where Fowley eats a sandwich in a restaurant, who described in detail how he was scammed by Fowley with some record deal. That commenter also claimed Fowley was a hot head trying to get into fights over nothing continuously. But I can't remember if the band being kept broke was mentioned in Edgeplay (although Wikipedia confirms it) or the Runaways movie. If anyone knows a timestamp for that in those movies, I'd be grateful. I don't know which girl you're refering to who booked the concerts. Here Cherie implies at @0:55 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fukr8hy0NPw.html that they had a booking agent (only at some point?). Also, as for who started the band, according to the movie the Runaways, the idea for an all-girl band started with Joan Jett, but Fowley connected the band members initially and handpicked his "jailbait" Cherie Currie from a club. Sounds like a forced assembly, but in the end good choices with talent. This may be my shallow comprehension as I haven't read their autobiographies.
It was funny; I had a friend who viewed the Bangles' "Hazy Shade" cover as proof that Paul Simon was a real rocker. It seemed to me that the Bangles turned it INTO rock. The same story happened with Elvis Costello and Tear Off Your Own Head, The girls ARE the rock; seems the boys are all floppy and useless.
Lita Ford would also be added. Both Joan & Lita were (&still are), awesome guitarists. Too bad only Joan is with this early edition. This is a vision of things to come.
Sam Bradley Oh man. Micki was before Cherrie. If it sounds the same to you it would be because Cherrie surely learned the songs from the demos that Micki recorded. And copied the style. Don't upside down. Otherwise I think she wanted to get away from everything The Runaways was and eventually developed her own style based on her idols: Alex Chilton, Joni Mitchell, The Yardbirds, Sandy Denny and others.
@@joyk2327 Michael totally gained my respect, hats off to that lady who stood for herself and kept her dignity intact. Pretty great musician by the way.
