During the summer of 1977 The Runaways took Japan by storm becoming the fourth most popular imported mu
sical act behind ABBA, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles. Unfortunately most of the available video footage from their two month tour is of fifth or sixth generation bootleg quality. While not particularly Hi-Definition I think this video is still a bit higher quality than most of the footage that can be found on RU-vid at this time.
With Cherie Currie on vocals, the dueling guitars of Joan Jett and Lita Ford, Jackie Fox on base and the legendary Sandy West powering the beat, the caliber of this band was phenomenal. Although they never had a number one hit (except in Japan and Europe), it's good to see that this supergroup has finally received some recognition in the States with the recently released Runaways docudrama -

Had they been around for MTV they undoubtedly would've sold millions of albums. A great band who aside from having good tunes were very easy on the eyes...and only in their teens to boot.

Wow. Cherie's range in Neon Angels is amazing. She had a great future. Too bad it she was so young and had to get rid of her addictions. I think she's was definitely one of the best female performers. It would have being great if she would've joined Joan, stood clean and made their own band by themselves, away from so many people's exploitation.

And I guess Cherie hated singing Neon Angels because of the high notes that she had to hit. Her voice sometimes cracked and she went off key on those high parts. So, she no longer wanted to do live performances of Neon Angels for that reason.

Actually Lita does want to do a reunion tour next year. Her new cd is called Living Like a Runaway and is dedicated the other Runaways members. As for the reunion she has stated it's in Joan's hands. Doubt she would do it without Sandy and really doesn't need to. She's a legend. Lita may be sincere or just wants cash. She has never played Runaways songs live as solo artist. Her fans are not Runaways fans. Joan Jett continues to play Runaways songs live and her fans are Runaways fans.

Runaways weren't much musically. Attitude and looks was all that was important --- all they could do, basically, since they weren't musicians at all. Today, Japanese girl groups like GF are the best in the world. America has faded into nothing. Not a single girl group worth anything that plays their own instruments. Never has been really. The Bangles were pretty inept too. And Heart was not all-girl. Even if you're a great female vocalist, it's almost impossible to put together an all-girl group that is worth anything. Why is that? Who knows. If you're a twelve yr old boy, you come home after school, grab your guitar and practice for hours ... every day. If you're a twelve year old girl, you practice putting on makeup and wearing outfits ... anything but practicing drums or bass ... what girl wants to play drums or bass? In Japan, lots. In America, pffttt.
