Alesya Terekhova runs a school called Woman Inside, where she coaches young women on how to be polite and keep a tidy house. She offers beauty and styling tips, and ultimately she teaches them how to keep their husbands and relationships happy. In Terekhova's view, Russian women need men to protect them.
According to Dr. Jennifer Utrata, associate professor at University of Puget Sound, the reality is more complicated. Utrata interviewed hundreds of Russian men and women on their family life for her book "Women Without Men: Single Mothers and Family Change in The New Russia."
What she came to discover is that a number of marriages in Russia suffer from the effects of alcoholism. A 2014 study found that a staggering 25% of Russian men die before age 55, primarily due to alcohol, and though it doesn't mean all Russian men having a drinking problem, it was one of the main reasons for divorce.
"I think women's ideas are that men really need to be the responsible ones. Even if they're not, there's a longing for a sober, reliable breadwinner," said Utrata. "They really want men to at least be focused on bringing home that paycheck and that does go back to the Soviet period, where men weren't necessarily encouraged to be equally involved in the home front."
During the Soviet era, the government required women to work but they were still expected to care for the home as well. They essentially worked around the clock. "If you can imagine in times of shortages in the Soviet Union," Utrata explained, "Doing all your grocery shopping, where you had to really go to multiple stores to procure the goods you needed to find for your family, and taking public transportation, all on top of paid work. Women really have this double burden in a more pronounced way than I think many women experienced it in the West. Although it's certainly a phenomenon for Western women as well."
Back then, at least there were more government benefits for working mothers, like childcare and maternity leave benefits. Today, even though Russian women are not mandated to work, the benefits are different under Russian President Putin.
"Many [women] did like work and value work even if they weren't in the top positions or earning as much as men because work was respected in the Soviet Union and still is respected in a capitalist society," added Utrata. "But work does not mean equality when you don't have the other equality at home."
As there was never a grassroots movement to urge Russian men to be more involved in domestic responsibilities and childcare, modern Russian gender roles look very different than in the West.
"There's still this hope, especially among the single mothers I interviewed, that they could turn things around," explained Utrata. "They feel Russian women are strong but they can be even stronger. They can maintain a positive outlook. They might go to church and light icons. They might read self-help books. They would get support from their girlfriends and other women. There were a range of things that they're open to that would help them keep this focus on relying on themselves. I called them practical realists. They might have their ideals, but they're focused on what they are going to accomplish and relying on themselves."
Terekhova's Woman Inside ideology actually somewhat aligns with this way of thinking, in that she believes women can only depend on themselves to properly care for the home and children. However, she also cautions that if this domestic work is done properly, there simply isn't enough time to also have a career.
While there are many people that just don't believe in feminism, there are also many that disagree with Terekhova's way of thinking as well. The feminist rock band, Pussy Riot, staged a surprise concert at a church in 2012 in which they sang about feminism. This was seen as representative of the growing frustration among many Russians over women being treated as second-class citizens.
Terekhova continues to hold strongly to her belief system, adding "It should be noted that while working and earning money, a woman loses her feminine energy and is no longer 100% desirable. This is a fact."
Terekhova is not yet married herself and is currently concentrating on running her growing business.

So a woman who puts her family first is viewed as being "oppressed" by feminazis?? Millions of women will say otherwise, my grandma, mom, sister are housewives, and took great joy in caring for the family and seeing everything was done around the house, and we loved them dearly and appreciated their efforts.

Honestly taking care of younger children or others is not feminist...I'm an equalist, I look after my siblings, parents, nephews,nieces, family because I'm human and a responsible adult, I still have a sense of individuality, and I will fuck up ANYONE that tries to strip it away from me or tell me otherwise,I'm not a pushover, I'm a independent childfree woman and I like it that way, my family tries to pressure me to get married and plop out babies, but I'm like "for what? Didn't your irresponsible peasant ass made plenty, I'll get married and have babies but I want y'all to pay for it, money up front cash, if not, then fuck off and worry about your own bills"...im sharp and ruthless with my tongue, and after a couple of hurtful truthful words my family learned to fuck off when I say no, I'm the master of my own destiny and universe and if they don't like it they can kiss my ass, til this day I'm every one's favorite aunt, cousin and niece LMAO you don't need to be lady like when your just a solid hardcore adult lol

@@robertduran8434 I know a lot of women who still wants to be housewife, actually the majority even the ones who are in university and work as hell. it's not like all women want to be independent. There are still chances to man like you, always will. Just be sure you have money because normally when they want to be housewife they don't want to work and want to be provided, and this is not good for males who say females shouldn't be independent but expect them not to care about their money which I think it's normal since they want to be dependent on them.

According to Unesco, 29% of people in scientific research worldwide are women, compared with 41% in Russia. In the UK, about 4% of inventors are women, whereas the figure is 15% in Russia. The first woman in space was Russian. She did the trip in 1963. In comparison, USA sent a woman astronaut in 1983. Lyudmila Pavlichenko is the best female sniper in history and among the best in the world. There are many renowned Russian women who are successful in tennis, skating, gymnastics, chess, handball etc. I know Russia has many issues but the bias the videos related to it contain is astonishing. And finally, you can find women who want to be housewives all over the world, not just in Russia.

Neither daughter wants kids so 4 people become 2 people become no people in two generations. It has nothing to do with men at all except that Russian men are ugly and nobody wants them. Queen of Thorns demeaning, patronising and marginalising comments like that are precisely why so many men and women have come to despise feminism. It's not equality to tell someone who chooses differently from you, or who prioritizes differently from you that their choices are less valid, or worthwhile. If it's not ok for men to tell women what to do and what is of value, then how is it ok for women to do it? It's not equality, it's women being above men, and above women who make different choices. My contribution to society will have a huge impact on my decendents. If you have chosen differently and love it, then good for you! Nobody else deserves the best of me better than my family.

I find this school to be very useful particularly in Russia. I am Russian living in the US for a long time. I was not cooking for the last 15 years just because I do not like doing it, but my husband does. This is a luxury unthinkable of in Russia. Men do not do anything at home, that is considered to be woman's job, this is a tradition. Young girls realize that as a wife the whole load of cooking, cleaning, shopping and taking care of children will be theirs. It does not matter if she is the main bread winner, or if she is working AND getting and education, or husband is not working at all: he will not help. And then he will complain that she is not giving him enough attention and she is not pretty any more. She is not pretty because she has no time to take care of herself. Then he gets himself a mistress or two: this is very common and is almost a norm. Then he is very likely to be drinking: in Russia 2.7 gallons of vodka per person was consumed in 2016. Domestic violence is also common, even in the families of educated intelligent people. Usually a wife stays married for the sake of children. Life is very tuff for a woman in Russia.

This video touches on some hypocrisy's on both sides. All I know is as a man, we want to take care of women and I don't see anything wrong with a part time stay at home mom or designating women to do some of the feminine things like chores. but to put child care and house work and work on a woman's soliders is no joke. I often found it silly that a man can go to work one day then on his day off can't be bothered to pick up behind himself because his wife is there. I'd feel like a lazy asshole if my laundry was done by my wife when I could have done it. Men have to meet women halfway somewhere. Just because he may be the primary income does not excuse making your fucking wife a slave.

Ally Grint-Potter well the fact what the girl is saying in Russian is NOT what is actually being translated to English. So... a lot of what was said was messed up, twisted, misrepresented, mistranslated, whatever you want to call it. Not just a few words here and there, full sentences changed to fit the feminist agenda. I mean if you want details I can give details. For instance when she’s saying: We need a husband to protect us from everything that is going on in Russia... In Russian she is actually saying: we here are Russian women, we can do anything, we can go through fire and water... You see how that’s two contradictory thoughts? And this piece is full of this kind of garbage. They should have just showed her picture, said: this is what the woman said, read a speech that they wrote themselves, and made that be the end of it. At least their bs wouldn’t be SO in your face obvious. Instead they put subtitles over her speaking, and they forgot there are Russian speakers on RU-vid as well.

Personally, my view of a well-balanced relationship is where both parties treat EACH OTHER as their babies. For me, I like to be pet like a spoiled little girl by my boyfriend even when I don't deserve it and I also make sure to spoil him even when he doesn't really deserve it. If you really love someone you won't look at the person as a burden or a problem, you would look at the person with love. Real love. i want to provide for him as much as he does for me, maybe its the cancerian thing about me but if i love someone i would always want you to be happy, comfortable and at ease AND i will definitely want the gesture to be returned. There are different kinds of men and women out there, go for someone whose characteristics you arre capableof handling. If youre a strong-willed indeopendent women, thats great, but no matter how strong you are, you need love, maybe not in the form of a husband persay but maybe a pet or something. Either way you give love to this object of aaffection and will want to receive love in return. Its simple, if you know deep down that you dont love someone and cant stand/handle the person, then dont go for that person and save yourselves the stress.

Can I say something and NOT get cancelled or even deleted here PLEASE? The content of this video is not about "oppression." This is an option, a choice for women to have the right tools to be able to build not just a life with a man, a family with a man who is going to be providing for the mutual agreement to build a family. Ladies, and I mean women in America, Canada, Australia, and Europe. *NOBODY* is forcing you to procreate and be "stuck wearing an apron in the kitchen." If you don't want to be a stay-at-home mom and have a career, that is fine. Do it. The true oppression of women NOT in western countries where "white males are in control." Oppression, abuse, lack of reproductive rights, lack of civil rights, lack of political representation, lack of education, and *ZERO ABILITY* to choose your future is in places like Afghanistan, North Africa, and Central Africa to name a few. Please stop the hate of the same men who agreed to everything you demanded over the last century.

Excuse me, but doesn't the title of the video imply that there are russian schools that have housewives training while you talk only about one private course (not a school) which is taught to young adult women not schoolgirls? Also 3:19, I don't know about free after school programs in 2010s, but they were present at least in the 90s and the 2000s when I went to school. And since when maternity leave was revoked? Last time I checked there was paid maternity+parental leave up to the age of the child of 1,5 and for 1,5 more years the woman keeps the working place plus all 3 years are included in the employee tenure. It's doesn't seem like the government only "used to provide" the benefits. Do you check you facts or you prefer to purposefully mislead to match the certain agenda?

If a woman wants to be a housewife, it's not anti-feminist and there's nothing wrong with that as long as it is not being forced upon her. The idea that feminism is supposed to be perpetuating is that women can pursue any career and occupation they want and that includes being a homemaker.
@alexfernandes3220
@alexfernandes3220 5 лет назад
All women should learn from them. This is how a woman's character n integrity should be. More women need to become like them in today's radical n misguided world. There is loss of basic conservative tradition which should be brought back to bring stability amongst the genders n bring out the beautiful n feminine n divine nature of the female gender. There was a reason in the older days women used to serve, appreciate n live for their men n men had to care for n protect their women. Much less struggle n nonsensical war between genders back in those days. We need more women like her to educate women on the beauty of the female gender n we need more governments like Putin's to enforce it.

I'm a guy raised by a single mother. So being a housewife is out of question for my mum. I was also raised in a Javanese household where traditionally, women are REQUIRED to be housewives. We even have a philosophy for it. The Macak, Masak, Manak philosophy. Macak translates to "dressing up" which requires women to doll themselves up and be beautiful for their men, Masak translates to cook, in which women are required to cook for their men and children, and Manak translates to "giving child" in which women need to make babies. Being raised in an "untraditional" way makes me open my eyes more. And it creates a far better family since they umderstand each other. According to a research, traditional households are prone to things like domestic violence, and women are basically powerless if their men decides to leave them. So, as feminists, we are okay with those who wants to be traditional women. But if anything goes wrong with your choice, don't go crying and pleading to us feminists. Because you CHOSE to be like that. So, if you want our help and protection, admit that your choice is false. Then we can help you out.

Any time you live to please others, you're going to end up unhappy. It doesn't matter if you're trying to please your parents, boyfriend, husband, friends...you're going to reach a point when you see how the inauthenticity of your life is destroying your core identity and self-esteem, and you're going to feel depressed and resentful. If you genuinely enjoy dressing in period costume or miming outdated norms, have fun, but don't do it with the expectation it'll lead to a perfect marriage or happy life. For the teacher of the school for woman, being a housewife isn't a backward choose of life, not at all. Been a housewife is a god-damn tough and thankless job and they should be praise for all of that hard work. So I ask again why can't we choose to be either or both? WHY?! Why is being the backbone of a family so disapproved by feminists? Why do they disregard the important role of a housewife? A house wife effectively controls and manages the life of her man and her kids. She does go through hardships. But if she does it all well, nothing surpasses the feeling of having a loyal man and successful kids. Money and power does matter. But relationships matter more. And housewives are the epitome of maintaining relationships within a family. In the navy they say "always respect an officers wife to be a rank greater than the officer". Because that is the way it is. Men make decisions. But the execution of those decisions are in the hands of good wives. I don't see why feminists belittle the role of the house wife.
@annabeljames9759

Because these feminists are not about equality, they play a role in destroying family life. Equal pay for equal work is a good thing, and if a woman wants to work, good. However, being the backbone of her family should be respected. It is admirable if nothing else and essential. Children do well, with mothers being care givers, if that is her choice. In fact, it is rather wholesome. As a mother myself, I regret the early years when I was not as involved as I should have been.

A woman can do all thus without a husband... it's called being a single parent.. and vice versa, a man can raise a child without a female and do all this... I should know.. I was raised by a single mother... and it was even worse because I had very serious health issues in a country like Jamaica too so my medication and teeatment was very expensive and she paid for most of it oit of pocket... she had a little help here and there from family and close friends... but other than that she xid(Edit:did) it all by herself...like... and now I go to a Private School on a scholarship... and am very happy...(Edit 2: My mother did eventually marry when I was about 10)

ahahahha most stupid video. its totally wrong. for woman to be housewife in russia its not a bad thing. to hire a babysitter is considered BAD. cos PARENTS should take care of baby. when woman is pregnant she cant and shouldnt work. for safety of hers or babies health. so man starts to work more. making a career. and woman is taking care of baby. at least a 1.5 years are lost in womans carrer cos af baby. by that time man is making career and earns more money. so FOR the famaly its better to earn more, rather women going to work. cos everything is done for the family. and by the way WOMAN doesnt want to work or even have free time to go to work COS OF BABY! And in russia man respects woman cos we owe them everything we have. cos women let us to do what we want and what we need. and for housewifes role in family. it also comes from ww2. cos there was litterally couple of men for dozen of women. i know a man that was alone on entire village. and ofc woman wanted children of their own (and yeah almost entire village are his grandchildren, he was lucky one). so they had to compete with each other. better housewifes won. and still now. there are more women than man in russia. so woman have to compete. cos not all man can be a good husband and father competition is growing even more.

This is one thing that modern society has failed in. Teaching girls in school how to be a wife and mother is very important. At least offer the choice. These days a lot of women are not even wife material. Can't cook or won't cook. Doesn't know how to do chores around the home and how to maintain a house and make it into a warm, loving home. These are valuable life skills. We've lost these valuable traditional ways and then we wonder why divorce rates are so high and why are women struggling to settle down

Being a feminine, jobless house wife is okay, not being that is also okay. What’s important is that it’s what you want to do and that your choices aren’t being forced by others because of what they belief to be the right way.

When she said "Its about not talking nonsense" it warmed my heart. I find it sad that western society is horribly afraid admitting that the female biology tends to have less abilitiy to think rationally (and more emotionally) (obviously exceptions exist). I think a woman admitting to use the well known "female logic" from time to time, and wanting to correct herself, is very respectable and desirable. Yet still I think feminism is useful to a certain extend.

The US and many countries in the West had just this sort of school in the past. They were called Finishing Schools. Sorry they disappeared.

Subs are incorrect. She's saying "we are Russian women, who can go into the water or fire (aka go through thick and thin)", but it's translated as "because you have a husband you have protector who will take care of you"

I'm not going to over explain things for you but not everybody feels the same about being a housewife and perfect lady, but that's ok if a woman likes it, just saying that we don't need to be specifically like that to be desirable. If you have this shitty kind of thought I have to warn you that there are women around there who are in their 30s, single and still very happy (and that doesn't mean they're alone)! Hope you understand

I think many females enjoy not having to work, and being able to relax while taking care of a few chores. If the man is making enough money, that system can work. The thing people don't understand is that its the choice of the individual to decide what role they want. If they put themselves out there as a trophy wife, then godspeed to them. Personally, i want someone who can work and make money, not only because of the economic viability, but because it shows that i married someone with intelligence and discipline. One of the many reasons is that it means I can work less for a better quality of life, and because us doing chores around the house together allows for more understanding when it comes to arguments.

With how unattractive American women have generally become in their often disrespectful and Trump-like candidness, and how beautiful educated women are in works like Anna Karenina and War and Peace, and how great it is to have variety in a society of opinions, this is a good thing! I love when women are independent and work for themselves, but a woman who wants to live to support her husband and focus on creating harmony in the home that he is battling at work to support is desirable if she doesn't lose herself in the process. But let's not forget the economics of feminism that have created a modern American environment in which both parents HAVE to work to survive, whereas life used to be easier and more free, economically, and more of a family's resources used to be available to dedicate toward the preservation and betterment of the home, rather than solely its mere survival.

A lot of factors have contributed to the need for two working parents instead of one. Most of it is to do with Reaganomics and loss of protection for workers. Employers no longer pay living wages or provide essentials such as healthcare. Second wave feminism fought for the right of women to work if they wanted to; they didn't fight to make working outside of the home a requirement.
