Stefan, another great episode. I really enjoy your set backgrounds. Neat German WW1 pickelhaube with cloth cover for this specific episode. I believe the "R" on the helmet signifies it is a German Reserve infantry regiment. The maps as a studio set background are really cool.

@Artur_M.
@Artur_M. 3 года назад
It was no longer Tsarist Russia. These units (as stated in the video) were created after the February Revolution by the Provisional Government. Kerensky was very much an opponent of the Tsarist regime, a Socialist Revolutionary, just the moderate "Trudovnik" (a centre-left social-democrat). People often forget that Bolsheviks weren't the ones that overthrew the Tsar.

WW1 is a very overlooked topic. Please make more videos about it. And could you maybe also make some videos about modern Asian history (which is also sadly often overlooked, despite being very interesting)(like the very good video you did about the RJ war) like for example a factions video about the komintang/the chinese nationalist party or a formations video about the chinese and japanese army in WW2 or the Meiji restoration. so many Russian men were refusing to fight that Kerensky was prepared to allow women's combat battalions.. perhaps they thought the sight of women fighting would shame Russians into taking up arms again? ..

A bit misleading. There wasn’t a woman’s battalion under Tsarist Russia. The Tsar only made an exception for Bochkareva. It was only after the fall of the Tsar that Bochkareva made her first woman’s battalion.

What an amazing woman to achieve all that she did during her tours of duty and then to travel to the Russian Far East of Vladivostok which must have been treacherous considering how long it is said to be even now by train from Western Russia. I wonder if there is more detail on her journey to the U.S and back to Russia?? That would make a great story I bet! Great video Prof. Stefan!

There was nothing feminist about the Russian Women's Battalion of Death. The Czarist government had sent so many underequipped and badly trained Russian peasants into the meat grinder against the the vastly superior Imperial German Army that by 1917 they were willing to use just about anybody as canon fodder. But I think the Russian Women's Battalion of Death is best remembered from Eisenstein's film October, where they play a major (if comic) role guarding the Winter Palace against the Bolsheviks.

A video on why communist were progressive and hated religion? People know they did but not why
@billd.iniowa2263
@billd.iniowa2263 3 года назад
I believe Communism takes the worship of God out of the population and substitutes the worship of the State. Service to the State is what's important, and service to God can get in the way of that.
@stanleyrogouski
@stanleyrogouski 3 года назад
@@billd.iniowa2263 I'd recommend Rosa Luxumberg's essay "Socialism and the Churches." You'll quickly realize how silly and reductive the idea that "communism substitutes worship of the state for religion" is. A quote from her essay. "The Social-Democrats want to bring about the state of “communism”; that is chiefly what the clergy have against them. First of all, it is striking to notice that the priests of today who fight against “Communism” condemn in reality first Christian Apostles. For these latter were nothing else than ardent communists."
@MrKakibuy
@MrKakibuy 3 года назад
Because at core communism talks about the working class gaining consciousness of its exploitation and launching a world revolution to seize the means of production, and they view things like religion and nationalism as capitalist distractions
@stanleyrogouski
@stanleyrogouski 3 года назад
@@MrKakibuy Note too that the ruling class often goes out of its way to destroy pro-working-class Christians. Think about the CIA sponsoring Salvadoran Death Squads in the 1980s and the murder of Archbishop Romero. And it wasn't the German Social Democrats (which Marx and Engels had a direct role in organizing) who pretty much outlawed the Catholic Church in Germany for the better part of the 1870s and 1880s. It was Bismarck and the Prussian ruling class. I think the classical Marxist attitude (as reflected in Marx's letter about the "opiate of the people") is that under communism the state would whither away and the oppressed would no longer have any need of religion. He wasn't proposing to suppress any particular religion. In the shorter term I think Marxists tend to judge religious people on a case to case basis depending on their class politics. Marxist anti-war protesters regularly march with Quakers and progressive Catholics. The slimy right wing evangelical protestants, on the other hand, who cheat their flock out of money and consistently support militarism and corporatism, well they're the class enemy.
