The Sad Truth About The Process...

The Philadelphia 76ers embarked on a strategic plan known as "The Process" under the leadership of general manager Sam Hinkie. The goal was to rebuild the team by acquiring valuable draft picks through deliberate tanking. The team systematically traded away seasoned veterans in exchange for draft assets, with the hope of accumulating high-quality players to form the foundation of a future dynasty.
During this period, the Sixers faced the challenge of making the right draft selections. While they had some notable misses, such as Nerlens Noel, Michael Carter-Williams, Jahlil Okafor, Markelle Fultz, and Zhaire Smith, there were also players like CJ McCollum, Jayson Tatum, Mikal Bridges, Zach Lavine and Giannis Antetokounmpo available who could have been better choices. The team's strategy of selecting injured players or players with complications, like Joel Embiid and Dario Saric, allowed them to accumulate more picks but also came with risks.
Despite the challenges, the Sixers did have some successful draft picks. Joel Embiid, selected in 2014, and Ben Simmons, chosen in 2016, emerged as a dynamic duo that showed immense promise. They became the centerpiece of the team's future plans and helped the Sixers become a playoff contender.
Throughout the process, two players haunted the Sixers the most... First, the Sixers could have had Jayson Tatum, who beat them in the playoffs 3 times. They also allowed Jimmy Butler to walk after one year. Butler has gone on to have more success than the whole Sixers team combined.
The Process might be over because James Harden is likely to leave, Joel Embiid is getting older and there are holes in the roster that have not been filled.

@@_viewsfromthed Yes it was truly bad luck that the only team the Mavs lost all 4 regular season games coached by the Mavs former coach in Don Nelson and a team setup that overmatched the Mavs on 4 out of 5 position and only were a low 8th seed because their best player Baron Davis was injured for most of the season. Had the Mavs not met the Warriors they would have gone to the finals easily. Frankly, that Mavs team had NO business winning even just 50 games, let alone 67. That Dirk achieved that much success with Jason friggin Terry as his second best player for most of his career stands testament to how great Dirk actually was. Only casual with no clue hold that series against Dirk.

You know looking at all these failed draft picks and the fact that players like Mikal Bridges who were drafted by them but traded away turned out to be great players, maybe the issue isn't just their draft selections but also their development. I think if Giannis for example got drafted by the Sixers, they probably wouldn't have developed him properly
@analyticswithchris
@analyticswithchris Год назад
Great point, the development was a huge issue too. Simmons and Fultz should have been much better then they were. Two number one picks who never developed shots is awful. There is a ton to blame with the execution of the process.
@jokerofmorocco

@@analyticswithchris The other problem with their drafting and development was selecting centers three years in a row. The issue was the process was some bullshit the FO came up with when ownership demanded to know why they were so bad. Their initial gameplan was to simply draft some top picks and they had to stumble on a lebron, who would then do everything for them. I dont understand how anyone bought the process nonsense, they clearly had zero game plan.

After all of that you said, "The Process was never a bad strategy..." There's something very smelly about the Sixer's plan, or 'Process,' being to win by losing. I'm glad it blew up in their faces. The Process actually worked perfectly. Philly acquired multiple no.1's and top 5 picks. And they still bungled it..all during a time when multiple teams were surpassing the Sixers with smart drafting, good trades, and player development.

I mean, it's not necessarily a bad strategy, it's just not that advantageous over a regular team-building process. You need genuinely great scouting, planning, player development, and a bit of luck to actually make any kind of building strat work, and the Sixers weren't able to put it together.

The thing is that plenty of teams before and after the Sixers have tanked. I'm not sure why their version of it is so "smelly." How is what they've done any different than what OKC has been doing for years now? The only difference is OKC didn't have a fancy nickname. But I don't hear anyone complaining about them.

The Philadelphia 76ers have been a fool’s gold franchise for decades. - Commit to tanking and expect to magically become a championship-capable franchise🙃 - obtain high-level players (through draft and trades) who overwhelmingly fail with them, demand trades, and often thrive elsewhere … so maybe it’s not that they made big misses in their picks but those who didn’t get ruined by Philly dodged a bullet? - High quality video but you left out some key details, including the toxic culture going back to the 90s (at least), the front office and coaching carousel, tampering penalties, and how that horrific culture is influencing Simmons, Harden, and Embiid’s actions in the current era the same way it did with Charles Barkley decades ago! After allllllll incidents over so many years, all these ringless legendary players cant all be in the wrong. The Sixers are a sick joke of a franchise and I hope the players force the League to make them get their act together. I’m selfishly motivated bc I’m dying for an Joker v Embiid playoffs matchup. It’s crazy because Hankie got forced to step down from the NBA which is crazy because he was hacking the system and could in theory get the number 1 pick each year until his team was loaded. He also said he wanted Ben Embiid and Tatum. Sucks the nba doesn’t make the draft back to the way it used to be

@josephmatthews7698
@josephmatthews7698 Год назад
Nah. The draft is meant to help bolster the worst team to keep the entire league competitive. Hinkie didn't invent tanking, we all knew about it and significantly frowned upon it because every team should be doing the best it can. Hinkie said 'nah, we're going to suck intentionally.' NBA couldn't allow that to continue because if it did then every single team that wasn't a legit finals threat, so like 4-6, would then start tanking and the NBA would be unwatchable. Imagine an NBA where every team except a handful are actively trying to lose and sitting their stars. That is a trash sports product and had to be addressed otherwise basketball would become trash and stars would either sit or all get traded to the top 4-6 teams actually competing.
@jvjjjvvv9157

Yeah, it's crazy that the NBA doesn't want teams to lose on purpose so that they can get the best draft picks, which is a strategy so complex and intellectually sophisticated that only the likes of Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein could ever think of it. Crazy that the NBA wants its teams to actually try to win. Everyone should just lose on purpose. That would be a super fun competition to watch. Audiences would skyrocket.

the 76ers were the tanking experiment and it failed tragically. embiid is the only lottery pick left with the team and he cant even lift them out of the 2nd round. team's shouldn't strategize to lose. the worst that can happen when you're always giving your best effort to win is developing the winning habits. the lack of a winning mentality and to truly strive for greatness isnt there. embiid himself only gave a shit about regular season accolades. getting his all star, the mvp he so desperately begged for. if he had that mentality and drive to win a championship he would have done it.

Just saying hindsight is twenty-twenty... Sure you could always make the perfect picks 5 years after the draft. Once all the chips are down and you know all the cards. Blaming and flaming the Sixers process for this is completely pointless... Especially saying anyone was eager to pick Porzingis. The NYK pick was widely seen as a complete mistake... Though, you know if you know. Kristaps was quite impressive in Europe... If he had been able to avoid the injuries we might be talking about MVP trophies, but his career didn't pan out like it could have. Much like the process... The draft is not an exact science, it is always a dice roll... No matter if you pick first or 25th.

You can't really condemn a team using hindsight. You can't use hindsight on draft night when you're making selections, so it's really immaterial in regards to criticizing the process. More pertinent criticisms would be looking at their drafting trends. For example, wasting high draft picks on centers over and over again. Or trading guys before they really had a chance to develop or fit into their role on the team (Saric). In terms of Fultz, I question why the Sixers traded up to #1, since it was obvious that the Lakers would take Lonzo and it was highly suspected that the Celtics would take Tatum. In other words, Philly would have gotten Fultz at #3 anyway. The only reason this may have made sense was if Ainge was actively shopping the #1 overall pick, or appeared to be. In this case, Philly might have traded for it to deny another team from snatching it. Can't criticize the pick of Fultz too much, since at the time he was considered a #1 overall by most major analysts. I also don't criticize Ben Simmons pretty much. Obviously, it's easy to condemn this given the utter trainwreck that Ben has become. However, in his first year or two in Philly he really did look like an amazing player. Honestly, I think where it went wrong was the year that the Sixers lost to the Raptors in the playoffs. At that point, the team should have traded high on Ben Simmons and used the money to keep Jimmy Butler and find another sharpshooter (or keep Redick). If you take a roster of Maxey-Butler-Harris-Embiid...that looks like an amazing team that would contend every year. Moreover, this is not fully hindsight. The fact is that by this point, anyone with half a basketball brain could see that Embiid (a lumbering, half-court center) and Simmons (an athletic, transition forward) were not a good fit together. Trading Simmons was the logical step to take, selling high to save money and/or acquire a valuable player in return. Resigning Jimmy Butler also seemed like a no-brain maneuver...until the Sixers just let him go.
