One of the most heartbreaking parts is that even as his mind was gone, he could still see and recognize David and Dorio because he cared about them so much
@daysand123

And even after clocking David and getting pissed getting some shit fed to him by David. Man knew he was gone and literally forgave and forgot for the crew. Maine was real to the end. An as honorable man as you can get in this shitty world down to entrusting David to yank his cybernetics at the split second to honor his promise.

Apparently in the TTRPG version of the game, one of the cures for cyberpsychosis is just regular therapy. Unfortunately one session costs twice as much as installing a grenade launcher in your arm.

You have to also mention that this only for mild cases of cyberpsychosis, most of the time it requires a full course of therapy, cyberware removal, replacing cyberlimbs and similar essential organs with vat-grown replacements and being admitted into a psychiatric institution during the whole process. Cyberpunk being Cyberpunk, MaxTac putting a bullet in your brain truly is the most cost-effective way of dealing with cyberpsychosis.
@robertcampbell8070
@robertcampbell8070 Год назад
The creator of the game compared cyberpsychosis to roid rage. It doesn't actually necessarily have anything to do with the amount of implants, it's about a person's empathy and humanity. A very empathetic person could conceivably become completely cybernetic and he fine, while one implant could screw someone else up immediately. An explanation from Mike Pondsmith, the guy who actually created the Cyberpunk TTRPG "First of all, Cyberpsychosis is a disorder that in part depends on the subject's overall internal susceptibility. Just like every person who drinks a lot at parties doesn't end up an alcoholic in the gutter, not everyone who gets loaded up on cyberware is going to automatically go cyberpsycho. You have to have an inherent susceptibility, which (in the TRPG) is represented by the player's Humanity Stat. Humanity is not just a measure of one aspect of personality, but an overall measure of several elements including the subject's ability to emphasize and relate with others, their ability to absorb and rebound from mental and physical stressors, their ability to show compassion and flexibility to others, and whether they are able to balance their worldview through other methods. So, in some ways, I tend to treat cyberware as an addiction--heavy anabolic steroid use being my favorite model. Not everyone who juices ends up crazy mad with roid rage. But those who are more susceptible to the need to take more steroids are more likely to hit a point where they do flip into roid rage. David's starting Humanity was probably already pretty high. And before things went to crap, he had a loving mother, a career path, and no more hassle than the average poor guy in a wealthy Ivy League school. So he had lots of buffer. But even so, he still, even after losing all that, was able to make friends, build a replacement family, and (after some prompting) even get a girlfriend. And a mentor (Maine) to create a supportive father figure. So he could definitely handle the stress of added cyberware up to a point. Most people in Night City don't have the level of Humanity to pull this kind of stunt off without going cyberpsychotic. So David is one in a million. And that's why Arasaka wants him"
@BobTheism
@BobTheism Год назад
Pretty much. An implant in the game generates a somewhat randomized number of Humanity loss, your starting Humanity being 10 times you Empathy. You roll dice depending on what implant it is and subtract from your Humanity, once it hits zero that's cyberpsychosis. Therapy can gain you back some Humanity. Also, Scandinavian cyber clinics minimize Humanity loss because of their quality and patient care.

16:53 I will say this again, I just LOVE this scene because after Maine says "No more runnin' for me, dawg. Reaper's finally callin' my name," in the distance, you see just a pitch black glitch. It's something not the human eye can see, but something that artificial optics can pinpoint just from glitching while looking in its general direction, hinting that Death itself, is just standing, watching, lurking, patiently waiting for Maine to bite the dust. Just far enough, but VERY closeby. It's so eerie, I just LOVE IT.

The fact that Maine had this problem long before meeting David already shows his mentality was beyond Super Human, he endured it and the fact it showed him running meant it was a long journey. Him slapping David was suppose their ruffle hair moment and when he went for a light slap really made me tear up. He was one of the best characters and this big bro when leaving he was like if I am gonna go , it’s gonna be by my way . H And when David had Maines arm in his hand made me sad even more, especially when i remembered he was promised by Maine of when David grows up, Maine will give David his arms as a gift. Maine and Dorio were good people in Night people, and some of the coolest people as well.

In the TTRPG Empathy holds back Cyberpsychosis and David has such a strong level of empathy so that is holding back and tragically as you get more active in night city, fighting and doing terrible stuff to live. The churn of Night City wears down peoples empathy eventually means unless you get out of Night City it is going to happen. It also very clever how it shows Maine losing it and instantly cuts to David sitting by the window foreshadowing his fate.

It’s very quick, it’s 3 really fast paced scenes starting from 18:32 You can catch a glimpse of David sprinting away from Maine on the desert On the second scene there’s a back shot of David doing the same pose he does when he’s on the Moon staring at the sun on the Braindance with Lucy, but the scenario is of him looking at a blue sky with GRASS showing under him (he’s no longer in the desert anymore) Last scene is non-chromed Maine most likely staring at David achieving getting out of the desert he was trapped in and kept trying to run out. Makes me think his last thoughts probably were of relief seeing David out of the desert, (or outside of the cyberpsycho pespective, he disappeared in front of him a split second after he blew up Dorio’s pyre, so he caught that David got out of the blast in time) David kept running.

In the Cyberpunk Verse, everyone has a limit of what their brain can handle operating as part of their own body (Cause ya know, it's not REALLY your body, so your brain has to run the thing) and depending on your personal tolerance there is a point where the chrome starts to be more than your brain can handle, and you start to short circuit as it where. The fix is to dial back on your chrome, simpler less intense or complex mods, ect... but that does mean giving up the power you already have installed in you... which for someone like main... :(

I view David's freeze in this episode as him directly confronting his past life, and subsequently, his mom's dreams for his future. He asks what David wants, and it hits him square in the face just how deep he has already gone just to survive, but now he stands at a precipice where he may lose everything again. His new family is falling apart before his eyes. Lucy is depending on his support for issues he doesn't understand yet, Maine is living David's fear, He knows any one of them could die at any time after our dear departed long boy. It's a lot of pressure to drop on a kid.

wanna know something even worse? that weapon maine was using is a smart weapon, meaning the bullets are guided micro-missiles. dorio got past the muzzle of the weapon to inject maine with the meds, but the weapon maintained its lock-on and bullets curved around to hit her in the back of the head. quick reminder that a bullet's exit wound is always bigger than the entry wound, so yeah maine had a front row seat to that happening.

What was not mentioned in the show, at least not explicitly, is that David's Sandie seems to automatically turn on when in shock or what I would assume be adrenaline pumping in his body as we saw during Fingies death, and during his scream with Maine. So, what I understood of Maine death scene, is that David tried pulling Maine to safety and was unable to (the dude was built like a mountain), but he kept pulling as David is a good man that would rather die than to leave his family behind. So he kept pulling, seeing his friend and mentor be torn to shred in super slow motion for "ages" until his arm was separated from the body. That's why we see him, during the seconds long Maine themed perspective, running away without any form, just in wild panic as he probably cartoonishly flew backwards with the arm before "keeping running". Traumatic would THE understatement of the century, but it was presented magnificently with David looking like he just matured 20 years in those couple of horrifying seconds. But such is the fast life in Night City, where kids are turned into men, and men into corpses. What a great show, damn.

Cyber psychosis is kinda like drug addiction from what I understand. There is a physiogical component and a psychological component to it. The physiological component is your amount of upgrades and how strong they are VS what your tolerance is. As with drugs, some can down a fifth of vodka and are still basically functioning while others are lying in a corner puking. The psychological component is, at least from how I understand it, the most dangerous part, like with drugs. It's dependent on things like your support system, your overall mental health, if you have any trauma/ptsd and how much stress you are under. I would say that when combined the implants make it harder for your brain to cope with your psychological issues since it has to adapt to those new things in your body. So if your dealing with trauma, stress or anything like that you start to loose your grip way faster then a none upgraded person. Now remember Maine has only recently lost a member of his squad (and he actually cares a lot about his people), he is under pressure from farraday to finally deliver results, this job involves him going against the most powerfull entity in the city and he is upgraded like crazy. Bad combination of circumstances.

oh shit... you might be right. David 100% took Maine's arm AS he was hit with the explosion, David was inside that explosion 100% just was fast enough to escape. Your point of "Did he try to grab main hand and take him with him? and only came back with his arm" might be right. The explosion is too fast even for him, not everything can be solved and yet he tried....what did Lucy say! "You are the kind of guy to jump right in and try to save everyone in the middle of a fire even if you know you will get burned." David was right in that fire.....he tried to save Maine and was burned as he was covered in soot and smoke from the explosion..... now I think its not a maybe, you are right totally.

I can't remember if it was the creator of the RPG or the video game, but someone in an interview not to long ago explained that cyber psychosis isn't real in how it is told. not an exact quote here at all, but based on how I remember it, it explained that heavy tech does put a lot of strain on the mind and body, but that strain isn't special in that it creates a new mental illness, its just like every other source of stress, its one more thing. And then the corporations have basically used cyber psychosis as a scape goat for basically any dangerous mental breakdown, so they never have to deal with the actual problems, trauma and illness the capitalist system causes. It wasn't always that way, in old old cyberpunk 2020 (made in 1990) it kind of was just, more tech = less human, but as that has come to be understood as a pretty ableist way of looking at mechanical body parts, I think this shift to being more of an allegory for drugs and violent media are often scape goated in our modern world. Just the same, drugs exacerbate absolutely, but they are rarely the root cause deep deep down. But its easier to criminalize drug users than provide them aid and stability, just like its easier to send maxtac to kill the "cyberpsycho" than provide them aid and stability.
