I just love Candy's William B. Williams. That fake sincerity and ridiculously hilarious laugh of his gets me. Every. Single. Time I only wish Candy had lived long enough to be interviewed, in later years, by Martin Short as Jiminy Glick, another SCTV alum. Can yoy imagine Glick and Williams going at it? Two hours of that wouldn't have been enough.
May I a moment to say something? It's really something when a big talent like, say, a Maudlin or a Bittman can be supported by a less talented second banana. William B. Williams was that - very little talent, but a strong foundation for the more talented people.
I've seen this skit a few times and I can't find one flaw. This is pure genius. It's subtle and oozes with parody. Everyone is in top form but Levy's work here is some of his finest. Top marks.
The Yiddish (paraphrasing): Bobby, what are you doing to me? Skip, What are you saying? Stop being such a pain. Bobby, I got you on this show. Skip, who cares, big deal. Spits. Bobby, you know this is network and you're making fun of me. Skip, you're a fool!
@@bittmanbobby They usually had the host's name... Sig Sakowicz, Forrest Duke, etc. I've looked for recordings of them but found nothing. I think Sig's was 'The Sig Sakowicz Superstar Show'.
"Bobby, whats with the kid?" 🤣 OMG, this skit is pure comedy gold on so many levels. All 4 of those so talented guys in this skit played their roles to brilliant perfection. I thought Levy and Moranis were especially stellar in their roles and in the way they interacted and argued in Yiddish. 😂🤣
They did the full show once. (for "on the waterfront again"). You get the opening credits, William B plugs whatever Sammy is currently doing. William B and Sammy complement each other for a couple minutes. They introduce who the guest are and they bring in the first guest. They skip it because it would always be the same if they actually did it (just like a real show).
The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: REPENT YE, AND BELIEVE THE GOSPEL. THE GOSPEL (which means the Good News) is the news that God Almighty, the Creator came in the flesh as Jesus Christ to take away the sin of the world. He gave up his own life to save ours. His sacrifice on the cross paid the price for our redemption with his own blood. On the third day he rose from dead and offers the gift of salvation and forgiveness to those that repent and trust in him. John 1:1,14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and THE WORD WAS GOD. [14] And THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH, and dwelt among us, Isaiah 9:6 KJV For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty GOD, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. John 1:10 KJV He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and THE WORLD KNEW HIM NOT. John 20:28-29 KJV And Thomas answered and said unto him, MY LORD AND MY GOD. [29] Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. Are you saved friend? If you died tonight will you go to heaven or hell? Acts 16:30-31 KJV ...what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Luke 24:47 KJV And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-14y_VIJ2ZbM.html
But not without rhetorically asking for Sammy’s permission first and paternalistically signaling transition transition from comedy to fake sincerity… every single time. Brilliant parody of talk shows.
I remember watching this show as a teenager when it first came on. Some people dont get it, i think its absolutely brilliant and cracks me up over and over again....SCTV was the best sketch comedy ever...great crew of talent...thank you for making me crack up then and still now.

I've known people that just don't get the hilarity in this recuring SCTV parody of the phony talk show. As for myself, this is comic gold. Nobody has ever done it better than SCTV. This particular segment, with Bobby's brother Skip, is still one of my all-time favorites.
I remember an interview of Levy by Terry Gross. She asked him about the wig he wore as Bobby Bittman and Eugene said - that was no wig Terry, that was all me.
I always fall over laughing when I see William laughing---high pitched cackle and then the "blubbering"---When John Candy plays Johnny LaRue and Guy Cabellero fires him he does the same thing "blubbers" to save his job---absolutely hilarious-miss John Candy
Big John obviously used Ed McMahon, Johnny Carson's sidekick and announcer from the tonight show as a starting point for his character, but then took it over the top and added his own stuff...just tremendous....His Johnny LaRue along with Gene Levy's Bobby Bittman easily the 2 best characters ever on SCTV in my opinion...
Also used to love Levy's character "Earl Camembert" the incompetent newscaster--there was a very distinguished pair of newscasters in Canada Lloyd Robertson and Earl Cameron who worked together for many years---the SCTV news parodied them with Floyd Robertson (Joe Flattery) and Earl Canembert (Levy)--absolutely hilarious
That intro is hilarious... I actually remember seeing this when it came out. That boom box is awesome... You just won't get comedy like this anymore. Its all pre-recorded laughter and one liner sitcoms. This is well constructed insanity.
Skip is still learning the comedy business. Give him time! Maybe he got the _Maudlin_ show before he was ready, but he’ll become a seasoned comic sooner or later!
Skip has more than made up for this shaky start. Saw him in Frankfort Kentucky three years ago, headlining that Reno on the Road revue. He tore up the floorboards- he was that good. Best part- his memories of Bobby.
Skip has a new podcast he does in the back of a Taco truck in Reno. Fantastic! He gets guests to help him prepare food and in between orders he sings. Still got tha pipes!
Aram Jahn...Simply pure genius...Interestingly in interviews with Gene, he explained that he could not do straight up impersonations of famous celebrities, (as others on the show did, eg, merv griffin, woody allen, bob hope, etc) but rather nailed the characters he portrayed to a tee, whether it was the ultimate smarmy sleaze in Bittman, or the Quiz show hosts, or newscasters etc...of course the one impersonation he did do, that being Perry Como (Staying alive), was one of the most fondly remembered sketches ever performed on SCTV..
As a kid, I had to suffer through SNL every Saturday night to get to SCTV. When SCTV was on....it was delicious. Bobby Bittman is a hero...Maudlin, a hero....Wiliam B....fat. And a hero.
bobby: that's what the small clubs are for. You drop in, bump some unknown comic, a little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down the pants, a bing, a boom, you got a bit. Go home, work on the rough edges, a little zing, a little zag, now you're ready to take it to TV.
shrimpflea I totally agree! Monty Python was the work of pure genius and, without any doubt,so was SCTV. SNL has had it's moments but nowhere near the level of the other two.
LOL. William B to the rescue. Classic characters all, and despite the parody, uncomfortably and hilariously close to the truth regarding the entertainment industry.
This show was my favorite. In Los Angeles it would air very late around 2 a.m. on early Sunday mornings. I used to stay up just to watch this show. I love the way Skip is bombing but Bobby tries to support him. The best.
If you love Eugene Levy's comedy, don't miss "Waiting For Guffman" with Christopher Guest, Parker Posey, Catherine O'Hara and Fred Willard. It's hysterical.
