The Samples: Slipknot Edition

Something A Bit different.
This episode looks at some of Slipknot's songs and the original samples used in them. I spent a while researching this and literally drew a blank finding any samples that were on any other album apart from their Self Titled album. Anyway, Enjoy.
Show some love here at Buy Me A Coffee :)

considering that sampling is mostly used in hip hop/rap, yea, you probably wouldnt know if you dont listen to rap much. a lot of rap is sampling small obscure clips and editing them in a arrangement that either works well with the music or makes a halfway decent beat. MF DOOM and Kanye West is probably the best example i could give for artists that likes to sample stuff. im not a music expert but that probably the simplest way to explain it without using examples and making a 20 minute video out of it.

Sampling is when you take a recording of a piece of audio from a source other than the one your working on (ie: another song, a film, audio book, interviews, etc) and you use it in some way, shape or form in your project. Samples are often edited to compliment the sound of the band. Some bands, such as Slipknot, use these samples to add that layer distressed horror underneath the main music or add to their heavily percussive sound. Others, such as Mortician, will sample large chunks of movies to set a theme or atmosphere for their song. Some punk bands, such as Discharge, will sample political speeches/documentaries to frame certain ideologies and concepts in positive/negative light Genres like digital hardcore, vaporwave, industrial and hip hop will craft their entire instrumental sections out of sampled sounds that are then edited to form percussive and melodic elements which are then used as voices for writing. Because sampled music borrows another artist's work sampling can get artists into legal issues. For example, Skinny Puppy have often had to change or omit songs and music videos due to a lack of clearance to use audio/visual samples. Many small bands can get away with sampling because they cannot sell much of their music and do not make very much, if any, money for their work. Larger artists, such as Slipknot after 1999 would be charged a large amount of money to legally use samples.

They will never be heavy or creative again; the writing was on the wall when Paul died and Joey was fired over his illness. Paul and Joey were the ones who constantly wrote heavy and disturbing shit, while Clown and Corey wanted to make more mainstream and melodic shit for broader audiences. With their Iowa album, Paul was the only one who said he had a blast writing and recording the album because it was as heavy and dark as he wanted it to be. All Hope is Gone would've been mostly songs like 'Snuff' and 'Dead Memories' judging by the inner notes of the album and the interviews revealing that Clown and Corey wrote songs for the album while Joey and Paul wrote songs separately and the band couldn't agree on what they wanted to develop into finished songs due to creative differences. It's why the band doesn't like that album much; it wasn't a cohesive effort and vision, and was the first time the band recorded separately instead of jamming, rehearsing and recording all at the same time like in previous albums. They would never again record that way either. Every album since has been recorded in pieces at different intervals. This is why I think they can't ever recreate what they made in their first years. The ambition to succeed and make a name for themselves was no longer there anymore and they couldn't agree on what they wanted to do. Joey and Paul wanted Slipknot to be a borderline extreme metal band, and Clown and Corey wanted Slipknot to be a mainstream powerhouse. Normally I wouldn't mind Corey's stance... but the guy is a huge hypocrite considering that he bashed Limp Bizkit and Korn for being sell-outs and catering to mainstream trends and appeal, only to then do the same thing years later and now shares the stage with people he called disgusting 5 years earlier.

They barely used samples after the first album. They didn't have a clue how many copies their debut album was going to sell, so there's quite a lot of of uncleared samples used on it.
