That scene where Scott and his son Charlie arrive at the North Pole for the first time and their sitting out in the snow is my favorite scene in the entire series. Loreena McKennitt begins to softly play in the background, singing The Bells of Christmas and a single elf kid walks out onto he scene and quietly grants them access to The North Pole, and the music kicks up. My god, I could watch that scene forever.
@Goldenkitten1

I think the wonder and effort put into the North Pole really won me over in this movie. Did they make the best use of Tim Allen? No. Is the story overdone? Yes. But it just feels so damn Christmasey I can't hate it, and the sheer work put into those sets is something to behold.

I always believed Santa did not die, he merely wanted to quit being Santa and felt his time was up so he "chose" Scott Calvin because he knew he was the person not only most in need but worthy of the job and Santa gets to live out his life normally. Presents also just appearing by Santa in a movie is explained imo that it rewrites the memory and/or history of adults that they did get them that broken bell or doll, it's a way Santa can continue to give presents without any accolade needed, it's selflessness in order to not be hunted down by governments and super criminals, but Santa is a omega level brick he can kick anyone's ass.

The 1985 film as a whole? Yes. But the first half of the film where we get the origin story of Santa as well as his building a camaraderie with the elves? I don't know, it's a toss-up. I really love that first half before we get to the whole candy cane plot, but I also enjoy The Santa Clause as long as it deals with the North Pole stuff or his relationship with Charlie.

My main problem with the film is the mom and the step dad when Charlie starts believing in Santa Clause and stuff like that the parents become so worried and they even take him to a psychologist and were taking away custody from Allen. The mom and step dad don't believe in Santa just because they didn't get what they wanted when they were little and yeah I get that but then they are telling a kid who is under 10 that Santa isn't real like what parent does that. You can say well he did say his dad is Santa and that is why but even before Santa fell off the roof the mom makes a comment about it.

I barely remember the plot of these but I think it's safe to say this is my favourite North Pole and favourite elves. Just seems magical and playful. Seems weird that it would be controversial for not giving little people actors more roles, but really these shouldn't be the only roles available to little people in the first place.

I always liked this movie as a kid, but it bothered me that the adults didn't believe in a Santa who brought presents every year. I remember even asking my mom where the parents in this movie thought the presents came from, and she kind of dodged the question because there isn't a good answer. It's still kind of annoying to me that the film never tried to explain that logical hole.
@UltimateViper

I usually don't question something that someone takes the time to do, but... a constructive criticism is but as close as it stays to a lot of movies it diverges on certain ways that a lot of movie reviewers gloss over. Yes, its derivative and mundane, but its not your typical Santa Clause movie. Where the magic starts flat builds with flashes and flare as the magic goes from dream to realistic and empowering mirroring Tim Allen's transformation. If this would have been written by others or even with a different lead say Tom Hanks or a Will Ferrel the comedy styling and whimsy wouldn't have grown with the main character they had to grow into the magic. This rugged to Santa transformation is nice. Yet the biggest thing that they did with no plans for a sequel was to actually not have Scott and his ex-wife not get back together at the end. For a Norm McDonalds character to not be the super serious, stern unbeliever that gets his in the end. Neil is a fun play on the usual troupe that lends dry humor based on his dry attitude.

The children did not take jobs away from little people because the roles were written for children. Children do have an innocence that most adults don't have. These children hit that innocence perfectly. Like the breathless, disbelieving gasps that they gave when Scott said there was no such thing as Santa Claus - right there in his own workshop. Also, elves have been done plenty of times. It was nice to see a different take on it. Think of it this way, when Judy had told Scott she was seeing somebody in wrapping, the felt was a lot different (like more creepy) with her being played by a child than with her being played by a little person, right? Also, I LOVE the irony of Bernard, the head Christmas elf, being played by a Jew! That was something I missed as a teen, I wish I hadn't because then I could have laugh and enjoyed that bit of irony, too.

Personally, I think the story is kind of a timeless classic. Not in that this rendition is a timeless classic, but in that the story itself is set up as a timeless classic. It explains a lot of the decisions to me - Disney was attempting to create a modern day christmas tale to be put up there with Rudolph, Frosty, etc. Did they succeed? Eh, I like it myself, but until we see remakes and retellings and versions that simplify it to the core and so on, I would not say they succeeded

The movie does have its charm in places but the problem I have with it is the kid Charlie. I just found him so annoying. When his dad takes over as Santa, what does Charlie do? He starts blabbing to everyone that his dad is Santa. Everytime he opens his trap, I just wish he would shut the hell up. The way I see it, it's his fault that his dad had his custodial rights taken off him. Not only is Charlie a blabbermouth, he gets pretty selfish as well as he wants to be with his dad/Santa all the time without giving a crap of what his mum thinks. When he finally decides to not be selfish and let his dad/Santa go and do his job, he goes back to being selfish 10 mins later. What an annoying brat.

I actually really liked the original Santa Clause movie since i was little, and even though i mostly agree with doug's take, i still really like it. I like that its not too comedic, because as a kid it made me feel like there was a way santa could really be real, even when i knew he wasnt. I think the film would work better as more of a lilo and stitch thing. if tim was a single dad and charlie was being taken away for his dad seeming to let himself go and falling into delusion. i mean, him trying to connect harder makes sense since he has limited custody or whatever, but him going out of his way to convince people hes real and enforcing the magic aspect is what i think makes people cringe about it. There are a lot of good moments in this film, especially when he's transitioning into santa, but it really is pretty predictable after that :/

@isaacgleeth3609

+gamejtv Hell, get one where Dinklage is Santa Claus. Think about it. Santa is called a "jolly old elf." Every culture has a different portrayal of Santa (the British Father Christmas, the Dutch Sinter Klaas, the German Christkind, etc.). But what if it's that way because whenever the current Santa dies, the one who the former Santa calls his heir becomes the new Santa. Some follow the traditional Santa, some Sinterklaas, and so on.

Kaybee Or have him do something similar to Tyrion: a Santa who worships the gods of whores and wine. He'd be the star in a porno called "Fuck the Whores with Balls of Jolly."

Critic really missed the element of this being an emotionally-complex divorced-parent film that didn’t go with the whole “deadbeat dad is a loser” trope OR the “step parent is a malicious jerk” stereotype. You really can see everyone’s perspective in the film. The Santa thing is kind of a metaphor. Like, did he not notice this?

I hate this movie because now people on the internet spell "Santa Claus" wrong. I also hate Ludacris for similar reasons.

The biggest element I hate in this movie is the stereotypical child moans about getting what he wants, learns nothing and gets what he wants in the end. Everything else wasn't bad, though...

You can tell he wasn’t a little kid in the mid 90s. He hates almost all the movies I grew up with.
